Preparing for the coming storm: Exploring interactions between corporate values and crisis management

One of the most prevalent corporate trends of the last several years has been the rush for companies to identify their core purpose and core values as a means to differentiate and create a sustainable winning culture. Yet even with more emphasis on stated ethical philosophies, internal crises and scandals have continued to plague corporations. This pilot project uses in-depth interviews with senior public relations executives from large companies. The project examines how companies integrate corporate ethical philosophy into their crisis planning and response procedures and concludes that, while a well-entrenched core values program can serve as a powerful tool and a framework for crisis planning and decision-making, it should not be viewed as a panacea. Further, the research finds that poorly executed values programs are destabilizing to an organization and actually make crisis response more problematic. ©Journal of Professional Communication, all rights reserved.
©Journal of Professional Communication,版权所有。

Is corporate communications kidnapping public relations

While a number of public relations scholars and professionals view their field as synonymous with corporate communications, practitioners and theorists of the latter usually claim public relations as alma mater of their discipline yet still see corporate communications overcoming public relations. An analysis of modern literature in corporate communications unveils a battle for power in the field of relationship cultivation between scholars of corporate communications and those of public relations. This article argues that the field of public relations should have an identity based on functional, societal, and organizational goals that goes beyond the link between communication and business outcomes, such as revenues, earnings, and market share, claimed by the field of corporate communications. ©Journal of Professional Communication, all rights reserved.
©Journal of Professional Communication,版权所有。

Public relations or public relationships
IF 0.4 0 LANGUAGE & LINGUISTICS Pub Date : 2016-04-30 DOI: 10.15173/JPC.V4I2.2913
A. Sévigny
This editorial for issue 2, volume 4 of the Journal of Professional Communication discusses the importance of the concept of relationships in the practice of public relations and communications management. The rise of the internet and social media has launched a new era of publishing by individuals who share information and messages amongst their social networks. In this new world, publication has become a relational act instead of a broadcasting act. It is argued that an organizaton and its publics share a state of being together instead of experiencing one another in a strictly transactional relationship. The articles in the current issue of the Journal of Professional Communication are also discussed and presented. ©Journal of Professional Communication, all rights reserved.
©Journal of Professional Communication,版权所有。

This study explores the relationship between personality type, academic background, and social media content. Ten participants from each of McMaster University’s seven undergraduate faculties completed a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment to determine their personality type. They submitted 10 personally-written status updates or comments from the social media platforms of Twitter or Facebook. The Content Analysis of Verbatim Explanation (CAVE) method was used to analyze 630 social media content to determine overall positive or negative explanatory style. Of the 630 submitted pieces social media content, 68.4% of them were found to describe positive events. 92.1% of the social media content contained an optimistic explanatory style. These findings suggest that social media is a largely positive medium for university students. ©Journal of Professional Communication, all rights reserved.
©Journal of Professional Communication,版权所有。

Visualizing communication patterns among expert and novice counselors

This study presents a method for visually studying professional communication patterns. Thirty verbatim transcripts of conversations between professional counselors and their clients were coded using Qualitative Data Analysis software. The visualization tools within the program were then used to create a coloured text portrait of each conversation. Text portraits were compared across counselors based on experience level. This method of studying communication patterns during in-situation conversations appears to be both powerful and effective in revealing patterns and relationships within communication events. Advantages of graphic display over traditional statistical methods are considered. ©Journal of Professional Communication, all rights reserved.
©Journal of Professional Communication,版权所有。
