Esthetic Languages of the Book in Fin-de-Siècle France: Japonisme, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau in the Private Library of Henri Vever 《

The private diaries written between 1898 and 1901 by the French jeweler, art collector, and bibliophile Henri Vever (1854-1942) provide fresh evidence about how important late-nineteenth century esthetic ‘languages’ (japonisme, Symbolism, Art Nouveau) were appropriated by artists committed to renewing the decorative arts; the diaries also address the meaning and status of books. For Vever, his extensive collection of Japanese pattern albums served, above all, a utilitarian function, as design primers and sources of information about printing and engraving techniques for craft modernizers. At the same time, included in the physical space of his ‘Japanese library’ and in line with Symbolist esthetics, Japanese books were, to Vever, suggestive bibelots, whose evocative powers were enhanced through inclusion in harmonious decors. Vever’s experiments in Art Nouveau book design, finally, reveal his additional conception of the book as both surface to be decorated and space of artistic collaboration underscoring the equality of all arts.

In a previous article the watermarks in the text and map pages of the Rome editions of Ptolemy’s Cosmography were described. This article shows how they can be used to reveal hidden knowledge about the development and chronology of the 1507/8 Rome edition of Ptolemy’s Cosmography. It also discusses the discovery of new states of three maps and the appearance of the Ruysch world map in these editions. Atlases in several institutes and libraries in Europe were studied firsthand, whereas information and photographs of atlases in libraries in the United States were collected by e-mail correspondence and internet downloads.

The ‘Taboas geraes’ of João Teixeira Albernaz I as a Mediated Textual Object jo<s:1> o Teixeira Albernaz I作为中介文本对象的“禁忌”

This article examines the ‘Taboas geraes da toda a navegacão’ (1630), a manuscript atlas by Portuguese cartographer João Teixeira Albernaz I (fl.1602-1649), as a textual artifact permanently altered and resignified by the additions and alterations that Spanish mariner and author Francisco de Seyxas y Lovera (c.1646-c.1705) carried out in the late seventeenth century. I examine the biographical circumstances in which Seyxas possessed the atlas and analyze his modifications of the ‘Taboas geraes’ as authorial acts with political, autobiographical and literary dimensions. I seek, as well, to identify problems that the ‘Taboas geraes’ presents for how we understand matters of authorship and textual nature surrounding this object – as well as other one-of-a-kind, mediated artefacts – examining whether existing scholarship provides an adequate framework through which to approach this situation.

‘Avec Permission tacite’. The Amsterdam Edition of Rousseau’s Émile (1762) “经默许”。

We are well informed on the early editions of Rousseau’s Émile by the exemplary bibliography of Jo-Ann McEachern published in 1989. Two editions were to appear simultaneously, one for the French market, to be published in Paris by Nicolas-Bonaventure Duchesne, and an Amsterdam edition to be published by Jean Néaulme, for distribution to the rest of Europe. The imprint of the Néaulme edition reads: ‘Selon la Copie de Paris. Avec Permission tacite pour le Libraire’. This contribution tries to explain these words.
