This article presents a study of a college for university students founded by Javier Galindo in 1960s Granada. It begins with an introduction and the historical context to avoid the historical anachronism. There is an explanation of the methodology used, which is not only analytical but also general, with the idea of showing the comprehensive historical environment given that the formal history of a determined fact is completed and enriched by other nuances –economic, social and cultural, among others– that accompany it. Furthermore, a chapter is dedicated to the biography of the founder and the motives which led him to undertake such an enterprise. An account is then given of the consolidation of the project, and the organisation and students of the college and underline the ideological connections with the European humanist tradition and with progressive education are highlighted, demonstrating that it was a centre that dared to offer an education different to the type that predominated in the society in conflict in. Finally, the discourse develops from the vision of Peace. The founder’s vision, based on his knowledge and experience, took integral education as its reference point although there was no recognised common theoretical field for the investigation of each of the multiple spaces and areas that pursued peace. Both the educational and the axiological and social values on which the ideology was based were of universal nature. They concerned the securing of peace and boasted of the individual, social and public capacity to change the situation. Thus, it may be concluded that the pedagogy and organisation of this centre ‘came very close to the pedagogical movements which from the 1950s addressed a more democratic type of education and training and, it is thought, provided the first steps in Peace Research ,’ as can be deduced from the studies made by Francisco Munoz in La paz imperfecta ante un universe en conflicto (Imperfect peace faced with a universe in conflict).

The prison isolates and hinders the creation of an environment in which family and social relationships develop positively. In the personal networks of inmates both processes of social support and conflict with their relatives and close ones are given. In this article are described the characteristics of the women prisoners’ support networks in Spain and how interpersonal conflicts affect on the configuration of those networks. We analyze the results of a research that has had a sample of 599 female participants (538 by survey respondents and 61) in a national study that has covered 42 prisons. The data are quantitative (treated with the SPSS 20 software version) and qualitative (analyzed with interpretation and content analysis techniques). The results lead us to point out that the prison intervention has in consideration the positive inmates interpersonal relationships rather than focusing all their attention those family and social ties that are shown as negative or risky. This bet we do on prison intervention fits perfectly with socio-educational approaches that comply with the guiding principles of peace education.

The strategies of building alternative measures of development have been established from a disconnected approach of very significant elements such as the legitimation or the dynamics of change of capitalism. In this research we study a particular case for a proposal of measuring development from the concept of Sumak Kawsay. This concept brings together very special properties which, although characterized by the same criteria as its alternatives (multidimensionality, segmentation, balance and subjectivity), resort to the novel use of a myth, that legitimizes communitary ways of living that are different to the most widespread lifestyles. This paper presents a discourse analysis of the conceptions about Good Living that can be extracted from the texts of interviews and other group dynamics carried out in the peasant communities of Nabon, a rural canton of the South of Ecuador. The analysis results a relational structure in which the limits and contents of an adaptive or hybrid discourse are defined, which is the product of the interaction between two opposing discourses: Sumak Kawsay (community and traditional) and goverment’s Institutional Good Living (societal and modern). This interaction allows to expose and to explain the set of contradictions detected; and the emergence of new categories that establish the limits of this adaptive discourse on Good Living: bad living, good dying or quality of life. In this way, the positions of the internal fractures of the populations are explained, as well as their strategies for subsistence and negotiation with government authorities.

The Amazonian border region of Brazil, Colombia and Peru has been place or stage to extraction, trade and transport of a wide variety of forest and aquatic resources, including those associated with activities considered illegal like drug or some types of mining. Aditionally the borders have also been converted in areas of conflict, violence and insecurity, and these, at the same time, are produced and exacerbated by state and institutional weakness of the three states, trying substitute it increasing the military presence, with little and contested results, on the one hand, by different public policies or the existence of rules and laws also different and incompatible. In a historical and current perspective, the article shows the relationship between the state, extractive economies of natural resources and conflict in the brazilian, colombian and peruvian amazon border, taking into account the limitations and possibilities of agreements recently signed between the government Colombian Juan Manuel Santos and FARC guerrillas.

Mexico shares two borders with Guatemala and Belize where surface waters are abundant, a situation that enables dynamic relations between waters and boundaries. The border rigidity has traditionally contrasted with profound local transboundary interactions between water linked to socio-cultural dynamics and the multiple circumstances of liquidity. Resulting from more than a decade of research in the area, this paper proposes to analyze different water borders conceived as an integrative duality –rigidity versus fluidity- from a perspective which looks beyond dominant methodological nationalism. Instead of opposing water fluidity and the rigidity of political boundaries, through examples of “transboundary water crossings” and transboundary river basins, the article proposes “water transbordering” as a perspective that dynamically intertwines waters and borders. Finally, it highlights the importance for research to go beyond nationalist, homogeneous and hegemonic visions about rigid borders, which ultimately feeds conflicts and moves towards a perspective that includes local dynamics of waters and boundaries in support a transboundary analysis that moves towards transboundary environmental peace.

This article explores the role of multi-level governance and power structures in local water security through a case study of the Nawalparasi district in Nepal. It focuses on economic sustainability as a measure to address water security, placing this thematic in the context of a complicated power structure consisting of local, district and national administration as well as external development cooperation actors. The study aims to find out whether efforts to improve the economic sustainability of water schemes have contributed to water security at the local level. In addition, it will consider the interactions between water security, power structures and local equality and justice. The research builds upon survey data from the Nepalese districts of Nawalparasi and Palpa, and a case study based on interviews and observation in Nawalparasi. The survey was performed in water schemes built within a Finnish development cooperation programme spanning from 1990 to 2004, allowing a consideration of the long-term sustainability of water management projects. This adds a crucial external influence into the intra-state power structures shaping water management in Nepal. The article thus provides an alternative perspective to cross-regional water security through a discussion combining transnational involvement with national and local points of view.
