The paper models grammar functionally for the purposes of teaching foregrounding its systemic organization. Genre Pedagogy – a usage-based model of language teaching – selects models of texts for teaching based on the efficacy of language choices are made according contextual patterns. However, a problem that may occur is that ‘model texts’ selected to serve as example texts for teaching could rely not on patterns of usage alone, but also on the subjectivity of the person who implements the model (being them a teacher, a tutor, an educator and so on). The paper offers a model of text synthesis as a as a basis for application of Genre Pedagogy departing from non-systematic text selection and replacing it with a quantitative approach of language patterning based on use for the selection of ‘model texts’. More specifically, it presents the process of modelling a synthetic text from systemic and quantitative criteria as the baseline of ‘model texts’. The paper goes on to assesses the contributions of this modelling to the effectiveness of text production by means of an experiment in which texts written by a group of students is compared with synthetic texts generated by quantitative usage-based choices in language systems. Results show how text synthesis modelling can be an effective approach for applications of Genre Pedagogy.

: This article addresses the alternation between plural forms of names whose singular ends in a falling oral diphthong finishing with - u , as in pneus ~ pneis (tires), espanhóis ~ espanhous (Spanish). The aim is to contribute to the understanding of this alternation in Brazilian Portuguese and to address the issues related to the variation, processing and representation of complex words in the lexicon as well. Data were obtained through an elicited production test with pseudowords and random collection of spontaneous production (Labov, 1972; Sankoff, 2004). The analysis was conducted based on the assumptions of exemplar-Models (BYBEE, 2010), according to which representations of wordforms in the lexicon are both detailed and abstract (Pierrehumbert, 2012) and are organized in networks based on sound and semantic similarity. Furthermore, morphological patterns emerge from the representations in the lexicon, which are affected by words’ token frequency and by the type frequency of the emerging patterns. The experimental results showed that the effect of linguistic constraints such as the size of the stimuli, according to the number of syllables, and that of the nucleus of the diphthong, is related to the type inferred by the participant, which is highly correlated to its level of schooling. The comparison with results from other studies reinforces the effect of the speaker’s sociolinguistic experience together with the actuation of innate cognitive mechanisms. The spontaneous speech data confirms the competition of the two plural patterns over the word’s representations in the lexicon as observed in the experimental data.

: Linguistic theories and language processing theories have distinct study objects and, therefore, also distinct goals and research methods. In this article, we attempt to demonstrate that, despite such differences, there is room in Psycholinguistics for language processing models that are guided by notions such as communicative efficiency and speaker conversational goals, which are also held dear by usage-based linguistic models. To this end, we present two language processing models with widely varying assumptions and analyze how these reveal points of convergence and divergence in relation to different linguistic theories. In doing so, we hope to facilitate collaborations between linguists and psycholinguists that develop research within usage-based frameworks.

This paper investigates specific manifestations of fictivity, such as the cognitive pattern of discrepant representations (TALMY, 2000), in oral language data collected by Cadilhe (2013) from undergraduate medical classes. More specifically, we use the concept of Fictive Interaction (PASCUAL, 2014), according to which language users use the Conversation Frame to structure thought, grammar and discourse, so as to highlight its potential for application as a communicative teaching and learning strategy. As a methodology, we use the blend of corpus-based and corpus-driven approaches to balance theoretical categories and empiricism. As a result, four formal and functional patterns of fictivity were mapped: fictive question-answer, fictive question, fictive deixis, and fictive direct speech. It was found, especially in teaching speech, that fictivity is often used in discursive moments of argumentation and explanation. However, teacher and students demonstrate to know how to operate with non-true scenarios in order to gain access to effective scenarios that involve medical practice. It is also noted that the phenomenon is a moderating device of teaching and learning, as a communicative strategy that appeals to the Conversation Frame to take advantage of what is most pervasive and entrenched in cognitive and interaction subjects, which is the everyday conversation itself.

: This article raises, describes and analyses, in formal and functional terms, instances of the subschemas that make up the constructional network [[para lá de] [X]] in contemporary Portuguese from Brazil (PB) and Portugal (PE), more specifically from XXI century. The gradient and the distinct levels of intersubjectivity that mark this network are highlighted. Based on functionalist theoretical foundations linked to the constructional approach to grammar, from Traugott and Trousdale (2013), Hilper (2014) and Diessel (2017; 2019), among others, the research, in qualiquantitative analysis, according to Cunha Lacerda (2016), focuses on data collected in the Corpus do Português/Web Dialects. It appears that, in 21st century Portuguese: a) [[para lá de] [X]] is distributed in different pairings of form and meaning, forming a network of vertically and horizontally interconnected constructions based on subschemas forged through gradual processes of language change; b) this larger scheme is distributed into four subschemas, and three of these, in turn, are also subject to subcategorization; c) such constructional network presents relative productivity in the language and demonstrates that the gradient displayed in the current synchrony is associated with contexts of emergence of intensive degree construction [[para lá de] [X]], as well as changes that occur after constructionalization, increasing the network of language constructions.

Based on Usage-Based Functional Linguistics, the present research seek to investigate the SNLoc attributive construction in Contemporary Portuguese. Using the Corpus of Portuguese to analyze past synchronies and the Corpus Discurso & Grammar for the uses of the twentieth century, we carried out a panchronic research in a primarily qualitative study, in order to prove the hypothesis that SNLoc attributive is the result of lexical constructionalization. The linguistic change begins in untypical contexts, in physical and cataphoric deictic uses; and, through anaphoric and virtual deictic uses, which configure critical contexts, the attributive SNLoc construction is reached, in a isolating context. In this construction, it is possible to notice the cliticization of the locative, which entrenches itself in the SN, forming a new constructional scheme, at the lexicon level. Thus, the locative united to the SN assumes a semantics of vagueness, distinct from the original, and together they constitute the hybrid SNLoc attributive construction, a new pairing of form and meaning, an endocentric, complex, productive and partially compositional type scheme. The SNLoc attributive macroconstruction of common use in contemporary Portuguese, through micro constructions motivated by specific semantic-pragmatic contexts, has greater productivity in the spoken modality and in narrative background sequences.

: In this article, we address the adjective in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese. We aim to analyze this linguistic category in a constructionist account considering morphological, syntactic, semantic, cognitive and discursive-pragmatic aspects involved in its use. Our approach is qualitative-explanatory in nature with eventual quantitative support. In the analysis, we use speech and writing data collected in different discursive genres, seeking to capture the multifunctionality of the adjective in communicative interaction. The study is theoretically and methodologically supported by Usage-based Functional Linguistics, a current that articulates in its investigations operational assumptions and concepts of North American Functional Linguistics and mainly of Construction Grammar. Data from the corpus show that formal and functional diversity of adjective constructions is motivated most of all by cognitive and discursive-pragmatic factors.

The purpose of this article is to address the discussion on L1 and L2 acquisition, from the theoretical principles of Diasystematic Construction Grammar (GCxD) (HÖDER, 2018) and of Usage-Based Construction Grammar (UBCG) (GOLDBERG, 2019): both models of constructionist assumptions about the processing and psychological reality of L1 and L2 linguistic knowledge. For this discussion, we have divided the text into two parts. In the first, we review some principles of the models. In the second, we illustrate theoretical issues, based on data and results from research focused on the grammatical knowledge of non-native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (L2PB) and English (L2E). Data instantiate the patterns (i) [(ESP) N] the nominal specification construction in the context of L2PB acquisition and (ii) [(X) VSN] the focalization through postponed subject construction in the context of L2E acquisition.

The aim of this article was to analyze the uses of the verb virar in order to map the cluster of representations associated with it in Portuguese. With this proposal, the study joined the Usage-based Models and more specifically the Usage-based Constructionist Approach (GOLDBERG, 2019), adopting the construction – a paring of form and meaning – as basic unit of analysis. For the development of the research, the Incorporated Mixed Method was adopted in which different mechanisms were used for qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The Corpus do Português was the database used and 922 occurrences from the 19th and 20th centuries were collected. The hypothesis was that Argument Structure Constructions interfered with the cluster of representations associated with the verb in the same way that verbs interfere with the representation of Argument Structure Constructions. The analysis confirmed the hypothesis by verifying uses of the verb virar with Caused-motion Construction, Intransitive Motion Construction, Intransitive Resultative Construction, [Pronome Oblíquo + virar] Construction and [virar e mexer + clause] Construction. In this way, the clustering of representations attributed to the verb also refers to its different contexts of use that assume different clause patterns and, then, more specific uses emerge from them. Thus, the article contributes with discussions on the nature of verbal meaning in Construction Grammar.
