Peasant Speech in Ivan Turgenev’s “A Sportsman’s Sketches” and Russian Fiction Before the Emancipation 屠格涅夫《运动员小品》中的农民话语与解放前的俄国小说

The article focuses on the representation of peasant speech in short stories from peasant life published before the abolition of serfdom in 1861. The author shows that throughout the entire period, writers gradually increased the ratio of dialect («regional») words in the speech of peasant characters. The culmination of this trend came in the mid-1850s and correlated, on the one hand, with the rapid development of ethnographic and dialectological knowledge in the Russian Empire, and, on the other hand, with the formation of a trend towards the aesthetic representation of peasants as “others” in juxtaposition to the educated elite. In prose, to make the subjectivity of peasants more embodied, it was necessary to depict their speech as generally understandable to readers, and at the same time — as phonetically and lexically different from it. The degree of such deviation was supposed to be not very significant, and literary critics constantly debated the fine line between ‘typically reliable’ and ‘inadequate’. The article presents various ways of depicting peasant voices and speech in the prose of both canonical (I. S. Turgenev) and peripheral authors (I. I. Zapolsky, A. V. Nikitenko, A. F. Martynov, E. P. Novikov).

The paper aims at studying five medieval Slavonic historiolae concerning nezhit in comparison to ancient and Byzantine Greek texts. The author brings together evidence from both tablets and manuscripts. The study reveals several important textual, linguistic and cultural aspects concerning the significance of the Slavonic text versions.

The article analyzes the hypothesis about the participial functioning of the l form in the history of the Russian language in the light of Russian dialectal data and the material of other Slavic languages. Many facts that confirm this hypothesis are found in both Russian dialects and Slavic languages. The first part of the paper discusses the functioning of participles in the dialect of the Opotchesky district of the Pskov region and provides the comparative analysis of the functions of the participle in the examined dialect and the l-form in the Old Russian chronicles. As the material shows, the analyzed forms have much in common, which testifies to the participial role that the l-form used to take. The second part of the paper answers some remarks made in a recent paper by M. Sheveleva by providing other facts from the history of the Russian language, Russian and other Slavic dialects, which are relevant to the correct understanding of the evolution of the l-form.

The Problem of Areal Studies of Folk Beliefs: Polish Zmora on the Background of Other Slavic Traditions 民间信仰的地域研究问题:其他斯拉夫传统背景下的波兰兹莫拉

Currently, the problem of identifying and comparing mythological characters from different folklore traditions remains relevant. Revealing common elements of mythological characters is necessary for compiling folklore indexes and mapping specific motives and plots associated with them. In this article, this problem will be examined using the example of the Polish zmora and other similar Slavic mythological characters. It attempts to compare the zmora from Polish folklore with mythological characters of this type from other Slavic traditions, relying on the similarities and differences of the motives, as well as functions and differential features associated with them. The article shows the features which are common for the Polish zmora and similar characters in Czech, Slovak, Moravian and Lusatian folk culture, Bulgarian, Croatian and Serbian traditions, as well as in Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian folk culture. The author concludes that the West Slavic mora and the South Slavic mora are quite close to the Polish zmora in terms of the image and the plot-motive fund, and on this basis, the Western and South Slavs represent one ethnocultural area. Meanwhile, the Eastern Slavs do not have a corresponding character, so the motives and functions associated with such mythological characters among the Western and South Slavs are absent on the East Slavic territory or are passed to other characters.

Двата източника се отличават със специфични черти за всеки от тях, което изключва възможността за търсене на пряка езиково-текстологична съотносимост, но позволява да се говори за обща тематична рамка и общи езикови тенденции. Творбата на Патриарх Евтимий се стреми да постигне морално-политическо единство пред османската заплаха за Балканите. Gavriil Buzhinskiy and “Commonwealth”: from the History of an Intellectual Innovation of the Petrine Era 布任斯基与“联邦”:从彼得林时代的一种思想创新的历史看

The term “citizenship” was used as an equivalent of the Latin “res publica” or “civitas” in Russian political culture in the second half of the 17th century. One of the remarkable intellectual innovations of the Petrine era was the regular use of the concept of “commonwealth” as an equivalent for the Latin “res publica”. An alumni from the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, Gavriil Buzhinskiy, a famous preacher and translator of the first quarter of the 18th century, played a major role in making this practice widespread. There is no reason to associate Gavriil Buzhinskiy’s “commonwealth”, as well as the political ideas of the preacher in general, exclusively with the Early modern political theory of Europe. In Buzhinskiy’s sermons, “commonwealth” was interpreted mainly from the standpoint of Orthodox political theology. Buzhinskiy’s ideas are closer to the Augustinian version of “res publica” than to natural law foundations, in particular, of S. Pufendorf. The appeal to the latter is more superficial and stems from Gavriil’s translation of his works, rather than from logical acceptance of his ideas. In his sermons, Gavriil Buzhinskiy successfully embed “commonwealth” into “monarchical rule”. The term “commonwealth” became one of the options for representing a political community, along with which other integrative concepts, such as “Russia” and “fatherland”, were used in the political discourse of the Petrine era. In comparison with them, “commonwealth” assumed rather an intellectual comprehension of reality and required erudition to grasp this type of political ideas. “Commonwealth” could become part of a whole ideological program, in which it was intrinsically linked with the concepts of “service”, “duty” and, especially, “common good”.

Постпозитивниот морфолошки член е главниот експонент на граматичката категорија определеност, заедно со показните заменки, во македонскиот јазик. Сепак, постојат видови определеност каде што членот се специјализирал и станал единственото средство што може да се употреби како маркер на соодветната референција. Сфаќањето на нешто како идентификувано, издвоено, определено, детерминирано итн. е субјективно и припаѓа во доменот на комуникацискиот чин, па затоа определеноста, sensu lato, и членост, sensu stricto, може да се означат како егоцентрички единици на јазикот (егоцентрици). Од друга страна, пак, генеричност, која подразбира упатување кон цело множество, т.е. род (genus), grosso modo, го исклучува членот како експонент на определеноста сфатена како множество од конечен број елементи, кои можат да се идентификуваат. Историскиот развој на членот упатува на тоа дека кај овој тип референција тој најдоцна се појавува како показател, а за тоа влијаеле извесни синтаксички и прагматички фактори, односно устројството на реченицата и актуелното реченично раслојување — тематско-рематската структура на исказот.

The posthumous publication of Iurii Dmitrievich Rykov’s most important contributions to the study of the writings of Prince Andrei Kurbskii (including for the first time his kandidat dissertation) has inspired this essay as a tribute to Rykov, one of the leading specialists on early Russian manuscripts. Rather than focus on the substance of the Kurbskii material, the emphasis is on Rykov’s own memoir in the book and more generally on memoirs as historical sources, among them ones written by the noted scholars S. V. Zhitomirskaia and A. A. Zimin. Appended to the essay are a number of letters which Rykov wrote to his American colleagues.

The oral heroic poems found in the Northern province of Olonets in the late nineteenth century, usually known as byliny, present a unique case of oral preservation of medieval literature within European context. For decades, due to the lack of manuscript copies of those texts, theories about their origin have been highly conjectural and subject to many ideological demands. While any definitive conclusion on their authorship, place and time of composition has to remain necessarily speculative, the present article, analysing the internal evidence of the poems and what can be concluded from studies on orality in other literary traditions, proposes that they were originally composed in written form in a clerical environment in the Northern area of Kyivan Rus’.

Nicolaus Bulow: the translator of the “Destillierbuch”? 尼古拉斯·比洛:《蒸馏酒》的译者?

The Russian translation of the German Destillierbuch from the edition published in 1521 is notable for the fact that it contains transliterations implying a Low German or Dutch original. However, since there was no Low German edition of the text, and the Dutch one could not be a source for the translation, it can be assumed that Low German was the mother tongue of the translator or editor. The paper also investigates other characteristics of the translation that point to the translator’s profound knowledge of Latin and medicine. This combination of features closely resembles Nicolaus Bulow, a native of Lübeck, a famous translator and physician at the Moscow court. The chronology does not contradict this hypothesis.
