Producing the Present through the Past: Adam Smith and the Inevitability of the Economy

This article makes two claims: first, “the economy” in its contemporary sense is distinct from the object of classical political economy; and second, despite this distinction, social scientists have generated a narrative history of the economy that contributes to its appearance as natural and inevitable by presenting it as a continuous object. This article briefly examines some of the ways in which we read the language of “the economy” back onto Smith, contributing to this appearance of continuity. This article then demonstrates that while Smith may have originated or elaborated many of the concepts used by contemporary economists, he did not understand his own object to be “the economy,” and concludes with a brief discussion of the political possibilities opened up by such an assertion.

Would you be interested in a book about the childhood of Shakespeare's philosopher-prince? Hamlet is William Shakespeare's best known and most performed play. The protagonist, a fictional Danish prince and 16th-century philosopher who is set the impossible task of dispensing justice without vengeance, is one of the most interesting characters in world literature. The young man whose dead father appears to him as a ghost and tells him that he was murdered by his brother, Hamlet's uncle, who then married the prince's mother, the Queen, must convince himself that his father's undead apparition is legitimate and that he is telling the truth.

The Impact COVID had on Carceral Institutions in the United States COVID

The COVID-19 pandemic is something that affected, and continues to affect, the entire world. In the United States specifically, it impacted the nation majorly- so many people became infected and died, and there were numerous policies implemented to slow the spread. These policies mostly took place in the general population, but in the prison population, many inmates were not protected. Inmates have five times greater risk of COVID than citizens in the general population do. Carceral institutions in the United States are already known to treat many of their inmates inhumanely, but the COVID pandemic amplified the poor living conditions of the inmates. This paper gives an overview of how prisons functioned pre-pandemic, and then it goes into how federal, state, and local carceral institutions initially responded to the start of COVID. How inmates were treated and whether or not they were prioritized in vaccine distributions is discussed, and the impact the COVID virus had on correctional staff is discussed as well. The rise of lawsuits is also briefly explored. Ultimately, there is much variation in how different jurisdictions responded to the pandemic and how they continue to respond.

A Comparison of the Patient Wife in Boccaccio, Petrarch, Chaucer, and Lope
IF 0.1 Pub Date : 2024-01-31 DOI: 10.3798/tia.1937-0237.2403
Carol Jamison, William Deaver
Boccaccio, Petrarch, and Chaucer all told versions of the Patient Wife narrative that could be read both literally and metaphorically. Literally, the narrative served as both a lesson in wifely obedience and as a commentary on the patriarchal social order of the Middle Ages. As an allegory, the tale had biblical implications about the necessity of obedience to one’s heavenly ruler. The popularity of this tale lasted well beyond the Middle Ages, making its way into Renaissance dramatic comedies. Some of these Renaissance versions eliminate the metaphorical possibilities of the narrative and mitigate Griselda’s situation by pairing the patient wife motif with a tamed shrew motif. However, in El ejemplo de casadas (The Wives’ Example), Lope de Vega prevents a dramatic version of the tale that does not abandon the metaphorical possibilities of the medieval versions. This essay examines the political and religious implications of Lope’s dramatic version of Patient Griselda. [Article copies available for a fee from The Transformative Studies Institute.

Baron von Humboldt’s Travels to Cuba: Views/Visits from his Personal Narrative

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) traveled a lot and wrote a lot. Belonging to a noble Prussian family, he studied botany, geology, and mineralogy at the School of Mines in Freiberg and at the University of Göttingen. In 1799, at the age of 30, Humboldt undertook a journey of approximately ten thousand kilometers through Spain and America. His two brief visits to Cuba (1800-1801, 1804) resulted in the Ensayo Político sobre la isla de Cuba (Political Essay on the Island of Cuba). Considered a minor book compared to his vast oeuvre, von Humboldt reinvents and takes stock of both the Cuban flora and fauna in what he called “views”. His “personal narrative” or views, which constitute the poetics of his book, do not contradict his politics; on the contrary, they shape it. My purpose in this essay is to examine the aesthetic elaboration of the German naturalist's “views” of the Cuban landscape. Not only is the aesthetic conception of his book romantic, but also its exoticism prefigures, in a certain way, Latin Americanism, as an exotic and magical discourse.
