War on women

South African men have declared war on women, a statement expressing the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). Some argue that such a statement is unfair towards men who still respect the right to health and safety of women in society, while others argue that the roots of this war find their basis in disaster patriarchy. Disaster patriarchy is a process whereby men exploit a crisis to reassert control and dominance, erase women’s rights, women lose their safety, economic power, autonomy, and education and are pushed to the frontlines unprotected. The question is, what does the term “war” have to do with the fight against GBV; how does it find its roots in patriarchy; what can be done to bring this war to an end; and what are the practical theological tools needed to fight and end this war? The study is done from a Classical Pentecostal perspective, focusing specifically on the position of the Apostolic Faith Mission on war, their deliberations on patriarchy and GBV, and what role Pentecostal congregations can play to end this war. The study offers an analysis of patriarchy that serves as a basis for the war on women, engagement with the national GBV plan and its implementation by religious actors, especially Pentecostal congregations, and proposes a humanizing pneumatological approach that recognizes the human rights of those affected by the war and how to strengthen their agency and resilience. The study follows a comparative literature approach and is done using an interdisciplinary lens, consulting literature from the fields of theology, sociology, law and philosophy.

AbstractThe church is still an unsafe terrain that breeds patriarchal ideologies. These ideologies are entrenched through religion and culture, sanctioned within the institution of marriage. In conversation with Denise Ackermann and Mercy Oduyoye’s West African Women Theology as a theoretical lens, this article amplifies the voices of African women in the context of the Anglican Church of South Africa (ACSA) on their lived experiences of GBV. This essay seeks to establish the life-denying theologies or acts of faith within ACSA that encourage married women to stay in abusive marriages. Data used in this paper emerged from the semi-structured interviews collected between January 2021 and July 2021 from the Diocese of Natal. Data revealed that teachings on male headship, silence and forgiveness and marriage and divorce play a role in the abuse. Unmasking toxic theologies is fundamental for interventions to be relevant.

Reading Matthew’s Gospel ecologically, scholars have investigated several dimensions of Matthean ecological conversations and have provided interesting insights into the ecological agenda of the gospel. Despite the contributions, studies have paid little attention to Matthean theology of biodiversity, the green nature of the parables, and the central importance of sperma (seed) as embodying the entirety of divine ecological revelation of God’s words and the ecological theology of Matthew. Exploring how Matthean ecological discourses call for new perspectives on our ecological crises, this article engages the parable of the sower from the perspective of the green nature of the parable, biodiversity, and the use of sperma as the centrality of God’s ecological/spiritual revelation. Its aim is to present new creative discourses for the ecological study of the Gospel of Matthew and offer an understanding of the parable from an ecological approach that can help us engage with our present environmental crises.

The Pentecostal movement, initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century and growing to form ten percent of the world’s population or one-third of all Christians by the twenty-first century, views the Bible in a distinctive way. For them, the Bible is a witness to historical encounters of people with God and an invitation to present-day people to encounter God. It is the source of revelation, a signpost showing the way to God’s revelation, including extrabiblical revelation, through the divine Spirit. Pentecostals’ goal in reading the Bible is to replicate biblical characters’ spiritual experiences as far as possible, in contrast to fundamentalists who attempt to find the Bible’s historical meaning in the probable historical context to deduce the author’s intention. For Pentecostals, knowledge of God consists of knowing God in active, developing relationality. They do not simply learn about God but “get to know” God experientially, in direct encounters. The article aims to describe the essential distinctive elements of their hermeneutics.

In this article the development of the ancient liturgical-didactic practice of the catechumenate is explored by making use of both primary and secondary liturgical-historical sources. The aim is to sketch a liturgical-historical overview regarding the rise, the flourishing, and the demise of the catechumenate; describing what the catechumenate involved, why it existed as well as reasons for changes to this Christian practice from the late fourth century AD onwards. The description commences in the first decades of the history the Christian Church and ends in the later medieval period and before the onset of the Reformation when what was known as the catechumenate ceased to exist and disappeared as Christian liturgical practice of initiation. In conclusion, the potential value of this ancient practice for current day liturgical praxis is summarised.

The investigation focuses on two previously unrelated thanatological concepts that support pastoral care when facing the loss of a loved one to death: mortality salience and cemetery memorialization. Two research questions are explored: (a) What positive psychological structures from mortality salience buffer existential death anxiety? and (b) How may pastoral deathcare providers reframe modern cemetery memorialization practices to influence the outcomes of mortality salience among the bereaved? Findings from current literature discuss the priming of worldview defenses, self-esteem, and nostalgia as important buffering mechanisms to strengthen psychosocial and spiritual well-being. To assist in the healthy adaptation of loss, the investigation examines the contemporary practices of cremation and permanent placement of dead human bodies and the interplay between mortality salience and cemetery memorialization within the death-avoidant context of deritualization. The investigation elucidates how deathcare practitioners may assuage grief and support active mourning among the bereaved.

Scholars believe that we are amid one of the greatest cultural revolutions since the mass production of books by Johannes Gutenberg around 1450. The art of book printing, which originated in Central Europe, turned the world on its head within 10 years. The mass production of books resulted in most people in Europe learning to read in less than one generation, which has led to major changes in all areas of social life and has affected the lives of millions of people for over a hundred years. According to these same scholars, we currently find ourselves in a similar position through what is known as the AI (artificial intelligence). In this article, the researcher wants to come to a better understanding of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and AI as part of it and the way they challenge preachers. The central research question is: In our pursuit to speak the truth of Jesus Christ to the powerful economic elite, what are the challenges and opportunities that the 4IR is posing to preachers?

Many Christians argue that Israel does not have an apartheid regime because (a) it differs from the South African context, and (b) the category of race does not apply. Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians has history, it has context, and it meets the criteria of apartheid as defined in international law. Israel uses ethnic cleansing, occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid as a body of tools to justify its ongoing imperialism in Palestine. This article considers scientific and theological arguments to highlight ecclesial differences, and the implications for the integrity of the Christian faith.

Jesus commands the Church to its reason for existence: preaching the Good News of salvation to all (Mt 28:18-20). For restoration in Christ, the magisterial theology of mission of the Catholic Church emphasises this mandate. The Vatican II document Ad Gentes restricts "missionaries" to "priests, Religious, or laymen" who are distinct from but are sent "to all". Deacons are excluded. As baptised and ordained Christians, permanent deacons are obliged to be missionary. However, they are usually incardinated into dioceses and are self-supporting, married men with familial and professional obligations. Thus, the possibilities for permanent deacons to be missionaries ad gentes are constrained. Ordained to be heralds of the Gospel, deacons may experience tension between the Gospel's demands and their lives. Argued from the Southern African "mission territory" context, it is contended that this existential tension can be overcome through an inter gentes missionary theology.

As baptised and ordained Christians, permanent deacons are obliged to be missionary. However, they are usually incardinated into dioceses and are self-supporting, married men with familial and professional obligations. Thus, the possibilities for permanent deacons to be missionaries ad gentes are constrained. Ordained to be heralds of the Gospel, deacons may experience tension between the Gospel's demands and their lives. Argued from the Southern African \"mission territory\" context, it is contended that this existential tension can be overcome through an inter gentes missionary theology.","PeriodicalId":42487,"journal":{"name":"Stellenbosch Theological Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44425887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was the public address in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University on the occasion of the reception of the 2022 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Awards for Theological Promise. The essay reflects on the theme for which these awards are given, namely “God and Spirituality – widely conceived.” The argument employs the methodology of “sites of memory,” made famous by French historian Pierre Nora. It the form of a walking tour of such sites in Heidelberg, it reflects on different ways of understanding “God and Spirituality,” represented by several public intellectuals from the academic history of Heidelberg. In the process, it constructs an approach to the notion of “theological promise” which is then briefly spelled out as conclusion at the end of the argument.
