The paper presents the initial observations on a lesser-known but extremely interesting monument at Hadrian’s Villa, the so-called Tabernae , partly restored and used at present as Antiquarium of refined marble statuary, and partly closed to the public and still under excavation. The building consists of two adjoining structures on high substructures resting on two different levels of the tuff layer. In recent years, on the occasion of some works for the museum, an excavation has brought to light some remains; from then onwards the team has taken an interest in the building built on the upper terraces, proving its rectangular plan with a central courtyard thanks to additional archaeological excavations. Research activities are still ongoing; however, a complete terrestrial laser scanner survey of the whole building has already been started, considering both levels, in order to analyse in depth the remains and the architectural structure of the complex.

Interpreting the need to process complex data in contemporary research processes, the research group worked on developing a web-based tool that integrated the potential of the visual language of interactive infographics into the process of organizing documentary sources. After analysing the major tools currently used to search and catalogue data through online collaborative systems and the study of specific examples of data visualisation, the paper presents the project for an online platform that allows researchers to analyse and query data in order to create transversal readings and new narrations that make it possible to interpret the field of study in new and original ways.

In Europe the number of existing buildings is greater than new ones, therefore it is necessary to improve built heritage management through suitable IT tools. Actually, BIM is an innovative methodology to optimize building lifecycle. Since BIM was born for new buildings, there are difficulties in using it for historical architectural heritage. Thus, the purpose of the research is to describe a possible strategy to develop 3D parametric models that can be easily used for many uses through a set of rules based on the description of construction components oriented to different objectives, e.g. restoration, energy saving, structural monitoring, healthcare facilities. This paper aims to discover a possible approach to implement a generic HBIM model which can be developed through the combination with a model based on intelligent agents (ABM).

From the conviction that space must be perceived by all the senses, an experimental degree thesis has been developed - at the end of the 5 years of study of Architecture at the Sapienza University in Rome - which analyzes and re-proposes the non-visual perception inherent in the human being but which, in today's society, is increasingly buried by the visual perception that instead grows in proportion to the spread of new technologies which aim to interact almost exclusively with the visual apparatus.

The digitization is the first feat of safety, knowledge and management of Cultural Heritage. The technological development has produced a complexity increase to manage the big data acquired. This paper shows the best practices for the digitization of a museum (National Gallery of Marche), hosted in a historical and complex building: it’s a problem of contents and “container” (the Urbino Ducal Palace = a city in the appearance of a Palace). This is the case study of the first challenging aim of the CIVITAS project. The digitization workflow has combined the several sensors and technology at different scales, such as static and mobile wearable laser scanners systems, the different focals for internal and external cameras, 360 panoramas and HD images. The goal achieved is the new 3D digital model, validated and with high accuracy, containing big 3D data, as starting point of HBIM, Serious Games, VR/AR applications.

The paper presents a new parametric approach for the renewal of blighted urban areas through the design and the implementation of interactive installations. Said installations are based on a precise algorithm able to capture the sound waves, emitted by the visitors, and to translate them in light signals. The syntesis process is elaborated with digital computation: microcontroller Arduino for the correlation between the sound impulses acquired (input) and the coloured lights emitted (output); parametric software Grasshopper for the control of the output variability. The digital technological system allows users to customize the installation by tuning the colours and the intensity of the lights. The model designed through such a parametric approach (envisaging these fields: technical and technological; social; economic; environmental) could be implemented in different social and urban context, guarantying versatility, repeatability and sustainability.

The dissemination of reality-based models allows a more exhaustive knowledge of the object of study and enables a better access through real-time applications running on common devices connected to the web. In addition, difficult-to-appreciate works of art can become object of specifically designed serious educational games through the possibilities allowed by game engines. The definition of a pipeline that leads from a reliable acquisition of shape, color and BRDF features to a motivating and satisfying interactive experience is the focus of this paper. It will be analyzed, in an interdisciplinary perspective, and will undergo a series of steps aimed at preserving the features of the work of art without compromising its realistic and fluid visualization, as well as the characteristics at the base of the stylistic and artistic quality.

The paper describes the application of integrated methodologies for the reconstruction of functional aspects of archaeological pottery, through spatial analysis of ceramic functional categories by GIS tools and chemical analysis of organic residues by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The research focused on the pottery assemblages from the archaic building (6 th century BC) identified in the Messapian settlement of Castello di Alceste (San Vito dei Normanni, Apulia, Italy). The application of integrated approaches contributed to better understand the role played by ceramics and their content in different functional areas.

Cultural heritage sites are threatened by a variety of natural factors and anthropogenic activities. Innovative and cost effective tools for monitoring systems and CH sites are needed to protect them. Towards this direction, the paper outlines an approach for digitally recording cultural heritage sites. This approach involves the implementation of the Territorial Information System for the Cultural Heritage of the Italian territory (SIT - "Sistema Informativo territoriale per i Beni Culturali del territorio italiano") for further management and analysis. It is also for this reason that the SIT, with the primary purpose of high-level knowledge on documentation and management, is set up in such a way as to be functional to the protection and enhancement and, above all, to the planning of Public Authorities of territorial governance. The SIT is operational and tested in sample areas of central and southern Italy and is in continuous development in collaboration with research facilities (University and CNR) and tested in representative territorial areas such as the south-western sector of the Salento Peninsula, which is presented in this paper as a sample area.
