Cultural heritage as well as its interpretation are in constant flux. Conservation principles and praxes have also been changed according to new challenges and opportunities which have occurred in times of sustainable development and smart specialisation strategies. This study discusses the development of the cultural heritage sector since the 1960s. Pier Luigi Sacco’s concept, Culture 3.0, is used as a point of departure to understand the development from a supply-driven conservation praxis, Conservation 1.0 (with focus on protection), via Conservation 2.0 (with conservation and restoration in focus), to a demand-driven conservation praxis, Conservation 3.0, with focus on adaptive re-use and spill-over effects in connection with sustainable development and regional growth. Going from protection to pro-action, cultural heritage advocators need to leave their comfort zone and enter the trading zone.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) was a significant step towards public participation and a dialogue among experts and non-experts on what cultural heritage is and what it will be. Digital Innovation for Cultural Heritage (CH) was an important element of EYCH, as it offers the tools to view and activate culture not as a snapshot of the past, but as an everevolving element of societal growth and prosperity shared by all. During the EYCH, we interacted with a variety of European projects, research groups, and stakeholders on the topic of Digital Innovation for CH and specifically on how cultural heritage can be coupled with cutting-edge technology to allow future innovation. In this paper, we summarize lessons learnt through these interactions, as well as through reviewing meeting reports and relevant research literature, across three main dimensions: Digital CH innovation facilitators, Evaluation and Intellectual Property Rights issue.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 made a strong commitment towards collaboration between those working in the heritage sector and those working in the creative arts, as evidenced in the criteria for the associated Creative Europe funding calls. The question of cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary working across the sub-sectors has also been considered in initiatives like the European Commission’s OMC working group on participatory governance in cultural heritage. This paper considers the obstacles to collaboration and explores them through a number of Scottish case studies linked to the author’s research practice. It then goes on to suggest approaches that would support a more integrated practice, including proposals for dedicated funding criteria.

What are the implications of that awareness about the role of evidence when it comes to policy making in the field of cultural heritage? On several occasions, the European Council has underlined the need to develop cultural statistics and the European Parliament has regretted the absence of data in this field. Still today, Culture statistics for the EU are not collected by a single stand-alone survey, but come from different Eurostat data collections. Starting from statistical conceptual frames established by ESS-net-Culture Commission, the paper discusses the characteristics of sources and data on cultural heritage available today for supporting policymaking at the EU level.

During the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 we offered new ways for participation of the broader society. We used the motto SHARING HERITAGE to invite everybody to join in the opportunities and events all over the country during 2018. Especially we invited to discover the European dimension of our local and regional located cultural heritage. To stimulate new European experiences in known or unknown and divers cultural heritage that was one of our central aims. During and after EYCH 2018 we got a lot of positive response and we can reflect some important messages for the future work in heritage communication, education and European cooperation. EYCH was a great success and much more than a year of events. It gave a us a lot of impulse to go on with SHARING HERITAGE.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 highlighted and celebrated the values of cultural heritage and its role as a driver of social cohesion and economic development, which requires an integrated approach in olicy making. The consultation process to help develop these policies reflected the right of all in society to participate in cultural heritage. This paper describes the work that took place in identifying traditional and emerging professions in the field of cultural heritage and specifically issues around the transfer of skills and knowledge. Dialogues initiated by the European Commission were facilitated by the mechanisms of the Open Method of Coordination and the Voices of Culture under the Work Plan for Culture.

The Architectural Orders have always occupied a key role in architectural history, starting from the rediscovery of the Vitruvian text in Renaissance, when all of the most famous architects gave their own interpretation about the Orders composition and proportion. According to the importance of the theme for the Cultural Heritage but also the educational value inherent in the redrawing through this roles, the aim of the research is testing and defining a generative representation of the five orders parametrized in function of the most important authors, modifiable changing different parameters. The definition of a single digital model is interesting for the direct comparison between authors interpretation, to support their accurate representations, but also it is useful to aid in the interpretation of the actual artifacts shape, allowing us to hypothesize the author's style and, in case of restoration, to operate in a consistent way.
