ABSTRACT: André Gallego Barnés’s 2016 publication of a previously unedited manuscript of notes by a student of Juan Lorenzo Palmireno is a noteworthy event for scholars of Hispanic emblematics. Palmireno was a famous Humanist from Aragón and professor in the Studi General of Valencia who initially held the Chair of Poetry (1550-1556) and later the Chair of Rhetoric (1561-1569). This work, titled Heroica symbola, shows how Juan Lorenzo Palmireno made his rhetoric classes more pleasant by means of his utilization of examples gathered from collections of imprese by the best authors of the period, such as a French author like Claude Paradin, or an Italian author like Paolo Giovio. The intent of this study is to show how the topoi served in the 16th century in the expression of conceits in imprese, how these imprese were utilized by professors in their rhetoric classes, and how they can still nurture to this day profound analyses –philological, historical and literary– for scholars of emblematics. ABSTRACT: During the first quarter of the seventeenth century, the genre of emblematic literature took a clear turn towards its more doctrinal aspects, producing a large series of works in this period whose illustrations, which generally exceed the quality of the preceding repertoires, in many cases were filled with characters who have the appearance of charming children or young people performing actions of apparent naivety. In this article, we are going to delve into the analysis of those cultural, literary, and iconic-artistic factors that converged in emblematic books during those decades that were critical for redefining the genre, and which led to the «infantilization» of its protagonist personifications in the most prominent works of an ascetic or mystical orientation. We will refer, in the same way, to the most relevant productions which have this distinctive feature operating in their picturae. Unlike other similar hieroglyphs, usually disseminated in printed form during Spanish Golden Age festivities, this one is painted and framed as a permanent artifact. The solution or «reading key» to its meaning has not been preserved, although it is possible to interpret it by means of indirect sources. Finally, I offer the most complete profile to date of the author of the hieroglyph, the priest Matías Fernández de Consuegra (1653-1711), a cathedral cantor and writer whose prose is characterized by a marked Baroque style who remained active in Toledo during the late seventeenth century and on into the and early eighteenth century. I seek to bring to light some handwritten texts that confirm the application of the Ratio Studiorum pertaining to recommendations about training in the art of combining text and images, through the invention of emblems and enigmas. The purpose is, therefore, to reflect critically on the thematic aspects, the role played by images and their relations to texts, as well as the way in which those compositions enter into dialogue with emblematic literature, widely printed and disseminated within the Jesuit institutions. ABSTRACT: The Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1528-1580) was a key figure in bringing the Italian wars to an end and also in arranging the signing of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. His duchy, occupied by France beginning in 1536, was given back to him in 1559 with the exception of various strongholds that remained in French and Spanish hands until several years after the treaty. During that period, important examples of artistic creation commemorating the peace treaty and also the autonomy of the duchy were produced in Savoy. This article explores the interesting configuration of this iconography that underlined the need of self defense during an uncertain peace. Durante este tiempo, en Saboya se produjeron importantes ejemplos de creación artística conmemorando el tratado de paz y la autonomía del ducado. En este artículo se explora la interesante configuración de esta iconografía que subraya la necesidad de autodefensa durante una paz incierta.

• Although many emblems resemble mirrors of princes giving advice to future sovereigns, the question of the transmission of knowledge and the education of the prince is more rarely addressed. However, the authors of emblems deal with this issue in a very concrete way, focusing in particular on the influence –positive or negative– that teachers can exert on their pupils, even if most of them recognize the need for early education. Finally, the recommendations on teaching and pedagogy formulated in several emblems reveal the importance of the issue of the education of the prince in the Renaissance and the 17th century.

ABSTRACT: This study broaches the iconographic program of the Campo Real palace in Jerez de la Frontera (ca. 1535-1545). After a brief exposition of the life of Pedro de Benavente Cabeza de Vaca, who commissioned the palace, this study analyses the cultural context of the work, establishing Barthelemy Chasseneuz’s book Catalogus Gloriae Mundi (1529) as the main iconographic source of the program. This discovery allows us to reconstruct its now fragmentary iconographic attributes and to posit the main keys to discover its meaning. In addition, this study proposes the Humanist Bernardino de Riberol as the conceptual author of the program, and his Libro contra la ambición (1556) as an essential source to reconstruct the meaning of the program, which has been extensively analyzed by other authors. Tras trazar un breve retrato de su comitente, Pedro de Benavente Cabeza de Vaca, abordamos el contexto cultural en que se fraguó la obra y señalamos por primera vez la fuente iconográfica empleada: el Catalogus Gloriae Mundi de Barthelemy Chasseneuz (1529). A través de este hallazgo nos aproximamos a los atributos originales –hoy fragmentarios– de la obra, y damos a conocer las claves generales de su significado. Así mismo, el humanista Bernardino de Riberol es propuesto como autor conceptual del conjunto y su Libro contra la ambición de 1556 como un recurso esencial para reconstruir el discurso del programa, al que numerosos autores se han aproximado.
