ABSTRACT:Margaret Atwood’s The Edible Woman traces the increasing self-alienation and inability to eat of the protagonist, Marian. Her identity as a young, single working woman is contextualized in 1960s Toronto, a culture marked by competitive individualism where consumption itself is a way of life, per Christopher Lasch. I argue Marian regains agency by reading through and empathizing with the material realities of commodities, ultimately recognizing her own position as a commodity unwilling to be consumed.

ABSTRACT:This essay draws on the discourse of sentimentality to define the political work of address in Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely (2004). Rankine’s sentimentality takes the form of an affective state that I call the miserable communion, in which readers develop an ability to communicate about the historical and social causes of what is typically regarded as the private emotional experience of sadness. The politics of the miserable communion rest in what it renders possible to articulate.

ABSTRACT:Charles d’Orléans uses avian imagery in his French and English verse to figure his personae, literary forms, and poetic practices. Birdsong contributes atmosphere to the emotional landscape. Allegorical birds advance the narrative, represent lyric form, or gesture toward family emblems. Throughout his writing, Charles’s birds relate to literature and literary performance, whether production or consumption. In this way, his bird devices are among his most self-referential and humanizing ones.

Interpretation on the Reliability of Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby

This article attempts to discuss the reliability of Nick Carraway as narrator in The Great Gatsby . Considering the fact that he represents the authorial voice and supports the implicit moral code of the author, however, Nick is enough to be reliable in his narration. His perception, interpretation and evaluation of the objects in his work are consistent with the norms implied by the author. This paper takes Nick as a starting point to discuss the reliability of Carraway in The Great Gatsby .

On Subtitle Translation of Culture-Loaded Words in Ne Zha From the Perspective of Child-Orientation 从儿童视角看《哪吒》中文化负载词的字幕翻译

With the fast pace of “Chinese Culture Going Out” and the vigorous development of the Chinese film and television industry, more and more Chinese animation films such as Ne Zha go global and keep enriching the spiritual world of children in the world. Rooted deeply in Chinese culture, culture-loaded words in films reflect the cultural heritage of China, whose translation is always a challenge for translators. In order to give a good Chinese narrative and better spread China’s message to children worldwide, subtitle translators should consider children audience as an indispensable group and devote more attention to their aesthetic ability. By proposing the perspective of children, this paper analyzes the translation of culture-loaded words in the English subtitle of film Ne Zha from the following three aspects: accuracy, readability, literariness for children. The paper investigates the loss of children-oriented perspective in the translation process and provide readers a new perspective of subtitle translation for future research, aiming to arouse more attention on subtitle translation study from the point of children.

Cultivation of Chinese EFL Learners’ Native Cultural Identity in the New Era 新时期中国英语学习者本土文化认同的培养

Identity and culture are important aspects in language teaching and learning. For the majority of Chinese college students, learning a foreign language is compulsory. In the process of learning, western values, ideology, behavior patterns and life styles may exert a subtle influence on their cultural identity. Chinese college students have a dual cultural identity. Despite their high degree of recognition with the western culture, they have absolute confidence in their native culture. The traditional one-way input of target language culture and the absence of native language culture in foreign language teaching should be changed in the new era.

The Swimmer is one of John Cheever’s best known stories. It presents the classic theme of quest and journey. This paper focuses on the protagonist Neddy’s swimming journey, probes into his intense longing for masculinity, scrutinizes the nature and causes of his masculinity crisis relating to the postwar conceptions of class, gender and patriarchy norms combined with structural economic changes and the increasing autonomy of women, and reveals Cheever’s deep concern about white middle class male’s dilemma so as to offer some inspiration for resolving modern spiritual crisis.

Research on Translation of English Film Titles into Chinese From the Cultural Perspective 从文化角度看英文电影片名的汉译研究

With the increasing development of globalization, films become a significant medium of cultural exchange among different countries. The film title, a key component of a film, plays an essential role in the propaganda of the film. Therefore, the translation of the film titles is critically important. This paper discusses the functions of film titles, analyzes the basic principles of English film title translation and cultural differences between China and western countries influencing the translation of English film titles, and then puts forward some translation strategies, including literal translation and transliteration, literal translation plus explanatory words and transliteration plus explanatory words, liberal translation, and creative translation, in the hope that these strategies to some extent can give some enlightenment to translators when English film titles are translated.

A study of English Writing Test in Senior High School Entrance Examination on English Writing Teaching 中考英语写作测试对英语写作教学的研究

Writing plays a more and more important role in the English test of senior high school entrance examination, and teachers pay more and more attention to the teaching of writing. This paper attempts to start with the backwash effect of English writing test on English writing teaching, and further think about its enlightenment to English writing teaching, so as to give full play to the positive backwash effect of English writing test and minimize the negative backwash effect. Theoretical Significance: It provides a feasible teaching model and implementable design process for the current English writing teaching that pursues high scores. The integration of reading and writing based on the development of thinking quality is an important way to realize the cultivation goals mentioned in the English subject key competence, and it is a key direction to implement and deepen the concept of instrumental and humanistic courses. Through this teaching mode, students will be given a learning atmosphere of overall learning and positive thinking, and at the same time, the educational goal of developing quality education will continue to advance. Practical significance: It provides a new connection point for junior high school English teachers to teach in the reading-to-write method, and also provides a certain reference for the teaching design involved in each link part of teaching process. Through the research methods such as questionnaires, interviews and tests, we can compare the students’ classroom feedback and performance before and after, analyze and demonstrate their effectiveness in improving students’ writing ability and writing attitude. Then hope to provide a practical paths and teaching references for the future teaching.
写作在中考英语考试中扮演着越来越重要的角色,老师们也越来越重视写作的教学。本文试图从英语写作测试对英语写作教学的反拨效应入手,进一步思考其对英语写作教学的启示,从而充分发挥英语写作测试的正面反拨效应,最大限度地减少负面反拨效应。理论意义:为当前追求高分的英语写作教学提供了可行的教学模式和可实施的设计流程。以思维素质发展为基础的读写一体化是实现英语学科核心能力培养目标的重要途径,是贯彻和深化工具性、人文性课程理念的重要方向。通过这种教学模式,学生将被赋予一种全面学习和积极思考的学习氛围,同时,发展素质教育的教育目标将不断向前推进。实践意义:为初中英语教师在读写法教学中提供了一个新的连接点,也为教学过程中各个环节所涉及的教学设计提供了一定的参考。通过问卷调查、访谈、测试等研究方法,对比学生课堂反馈前后的表现,分析论证其对提高学生写作能力和写作态度的有效性。进而希望为今后的教学提供实践路径和教学参考。
