The purpose of the conducted experiment was to estimate the influence of the form and dose of selenium on yielding and N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S content in the above ground parts of maize. The experiment was established in Wagner type pots with a capacity of 5 kg of soil in three replications. The substrate was a slightly acidic light loam with an average content of P, K, Mg and S and low Se content. Selenium was applied in the form of Na2SeO4 and Na2SeO3, and doses of: 0; 0.10; 0.25; 0.50; 0.75; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0 and 4.0 mg kg of soil. The ‘Lober’ strain of maize was used as a test plant and was cut down during the BBCH 73 phase. The conducted research demonstrated that the after entering into the soil 0.1 mgSe kg, form in which the element was used, did not affect the weight of the harvested crop corn. At all the rest selenium dosage levels the biomass cultivated in soil enriched with sodium selenate was higher than the biomass obtained after the application of sodium selenite. The application of selenium in the form of selenate (Na2SeO4) and selenite (Na2SeO3) caused a substantial increase in the content of this trace element in maize. The effect of the selenate was such that average Se content in plants was 13 times higher than the predetermined average for maize cultivated in soil with the selenite supplement. The introduction of selenium into the soil, especially in higher doses, triggered changes in the chemical composition of the maize. With the greater doses of Se(VI) the content of nitrogen, potassium and calcium content in plants decreased. The impact of that form of selenium upon phosphorus and sulphur content depended on the size of the applied doses. Selenium introduced in doses of 0.1–0.5 mg kg increased the content of P and limited the amount of S. At greater doses the reverse relationship was observed. Maize cultivated in soil enriched with Na2SeO3 contained less nitrogen and sulphur but more phosphorus, potassium, and calcium than that cultivated in soil with the selenate supplement.

The main aim of the research was the evaluation of the municipal waste dump impact on the quantity of bacteria and fungi in the soil environment in different distances from the collected waste. The field analyses were carried out for 12 months, from June to May, during 2 years. Analytical data show that 1 g of the soil’s dry mass, collected 1230 meters from the municipal waste dump Barycz contains: 27 630 to 4 223 860 cfu of vegetative forms of bacteria and 4580 to 1 806 110 cfu of the bacterial spores. Ratio of bacterial spores and vegetative cells was between 1.3 and 98.6 %. Microscopic fungi – Micromycetes (yeasts and filamentous fungi) occurred in quantities between 1180 and 229 630 cfu/g of the soil’s dry mass.

The paper presents the results of investigations on concentrations of ions of selected heavy metals (Fe, Cr, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Hg) in sediments and water in a small dammed reservoir located in Kaniow (the Swietokrzyskie Province, Poland) on the stream flowing from Borowa Gora (Borowa Mount). The sediments and water were collected from the upper, middle, and lower part of the reservoir. The samples were collected twice, first in July 2012, and then in March 2013. The content of trace elements in water did not exceed: 801 g dm -3 (Fe), 0.064 g dm -3 (Cr), 13.5 g dm -3 (Zn), 0.106 g dm -3 (Ni), 285 g dm -3

The presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the aquatic environment requires the development of an effective monitoring method. The paper presents the developed procedure of determination of pharmaceutical compounds selected from the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – ibuprofen and diclofenac. To isolate selected compounds from the tested water the solid phase extraction (SPE) was employed. The quantitative and qualitative analysis was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography HPLC (UV) as well as gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry with electron ionization GC-MS (EI). Described analytical procedures allows to separate and quantificat pharmaceutical mixtures with a satisfactory reproducibility and accuracy. The values of the recovery degree confer the possibility of the complete quantitative control of tested pharmaceuticals in water samples. The described method can be used to control the analytical processes of natural water purification and wastewater treatment from pharmaceutical compounds.

The aim of the studies was to consider the use of one registered morphoregulator in the Slovak oats with practical recommendations for the selected (most commonly grown) varieties. Since plant producers are not very experienced in the application of the morphoregulator to some varieties, the most widely grown oat varieties were used in the experiment. The field trial was established in 2009, 2010 and 2011 at the CVRV – VURV (Research Institute for Plant Production) Pieš any, the VŠS (Research Breeding Station) Víg3⁄4aš-Pstruša. The impact of the morphoregulator on reducing the stem and enhancing the number of productive tillers was confirmed in all the monitored varieties. Basing on the results of the trial, we do not recommend the application of CCC for ‘Auron’, ‘Atego’ and especially ‘Valentin’ varieties. For ‘Vendelin’ and ‘Zvolen’ varieties we recommend to consider the economic acceptability of morphoregulator applications. As economically acceptable we can recommend application of the morphoregulator only for the ‘Flamingstern’ variety.

Soil mulching is very important practice in field production. Different mulching materials can be use for different agricultural and horticultural species in different climatic environments. The main role of organic mulches is to protect the soil surface from the influence on unfavorable factors and to improve the growing conditions for the crop plants. Mulching reduces unproductive evaporation from the soil surface. Organic mulch also reduces soil wind and water erosion by protection the soil surface and reduces nutrient loss by runoff and leaching. Mulches conserve soil moisture, help maintain stable soil temperature, increase soil porosity and suppress weed growth. The main advantages of organic mulches are organic matter and nutrient supply not only for plants but also for soil organism. Mulch improves physical, chemical and biological properties of soil and ultimately enhances the growth and yield of crops. The purpose of this review is to comparative analysis of the scientific research on the benefits and drawbacks of mulches used in vegetable cultivation.

The paper presents definition of a modern agriculture as a man activity in very broad natural and social interactions. The paper also presents critical views on modern farming and fertilization, as well as indicates that the proper use of artificial fertilizers is and should be an important factor of crop productivity. The paper gives the list of the most basic chemical fertilizers and current level of fertilizing components use in Poland. The title of the paper, which is also the main thesis of the study, fully confirms the legitimacy of a view that chemical fertilizers are neither harmful nor toxic, and it is in the opposition to the common and false opinions that present chemical fertilizers as dangerous for humans, which is of course completely groundless.

Studies on the chemical composition and variability of morphological structure of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) allow to assess the health state of trees growing in conditions of exposure to alkaline dust emission. The aim of the studies was the morphological analysis of the epicuticular waxes and the content of microelements in the needles of Scots pine growing in conditions of alkaline pressure, compared to the needles from emission-free areas. The studies were conducted on two-year-old needles collected in the vicinity of cement mills in Sitkowka and Ozarow, located in the Swietokrzyskie Province. The chemical composition analysis of needles indicated higher contents of Cu, Pb and Sr as well as lower content of Mn in the needles from alkalised areas. They were also characterised by higher contents of pHKCl than in the needles from emission-free areas. The images of needles, taken under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), showed definite signs of epicuticular wax erosion in comparison to the needles collected from the control area. According to Turunen’s classification, third and fourth degrees of epicuticular wax coverage atrophy were found in two-year-old needles. The analysis of the chemical composition of the needles and the morphology of their surface structure indicated a negative impact of cement dust pollution on Scots pine’s assimilation apparatus.
