This article reports on research on the information behaviour of the Terena people from a Brazilian indigenous community. The aim of this study is to present and analyse the data collected on the information behaviour of the Terena people, which will serve as a basis to propose a model for creating a multicultural library linked to a sociocultural perspective as part of a PhD research study. A qualitative and explanatory study was conducted within the ethnographic structure for data collection. Field appointments and interviews were conducted with 18 research participants from the indigenous peoples of the Bananal community between 2021 and 2022. The data analysis shows that their information behaviour was influenced by cultural factors, and it is therefore essential to address multicultural issues within this context. It is important to ensure that the information addresses cultural diversities, promoting the social visibility of indigenous peoples and preventing their exclusion. Future research should improve multicultural access to information by developing inclusive strategies that consider indigenous perspectives and knowledge.

Most interaction designs unknowingly discriminate against certain groups of people, and video-on-demand platforms are often included among such designs. This study presents an introduction to the adoption of a gender perspective in the user experience design of the search engine of a video-on-demand platform. User experience design includes, in essence, user needs in order to eliminate the obstacles users may encounter on their way to having a productive, straightforward and rewarding experience. This project was carried out using established user experience methods and techniques. The final design provides a prototype for an advanced search engine within a video-on-demand platform and includes all the elements in the filtering system of the main catalogue. It eliminates the gender gap and promotes women’s empowerment, thereby providing an experience where users feel comfortable and satisfied.

This study investigated leadership styles, organisational rewards and employees’ commitment in academic libraries in Nigeria. The descriptive study adopted a total enumeration sampling technique. All of the 218 staff of academic libraries in Ondo State were covered by the study; 153 (70.2%) responded to the study. The Organisational Commitment Questionnaire developed by Allen and Meyer was used for data collection. The study found that the extent of the leadership styles adopted by the heads of libraries was moderate. Heads of libraries and subordinate staff had conflicting opinions about the extent of employees’ commitment and organisational rewards given to employees. The study found a significant relationship between leadership styles and employee commitment, and between organisational rewards and employee commitment in academic libraries in Nigeria. It is recommended that academic libraries should be democratic in their leadership approach and reward employees fairly for their efforts so as to ensure maximum employee commitment.

This article explores how libraries and museums can become more accessible, and in turn also more inclusive, for autistic users. Through a small survey, a literature review and a short case study, it evaluates what steps to take in order to make these places more accessible for this part of the population. The survey had 126 participants, where 12 were diagnosed as autistic and 28 self-diagnosed as autistic. The survey shows that over half of the participants struggled with sensory overload, social interactions and anxiety in these places. A list of ideas on how to make these spaces more suitable for autistic people is offered in the conclusion, including different types of sensory-friendly and social provisions.

Public libraries can play dual roles as knowledge centres and community hubs for societies. They can provide easy ways to reach out to the community by engaging the community through a number of initiatives, including health literacy. The main aim of this study is to investigate public libraries’ responses and willingness in providing health information services to tribal communities. Data was collected from 11 library professionals using a structured interview method and 276 tribal women through a survey. The data was then analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings show that most of the participating libraries (72.8%) did not provide any specific service for tribal-community engagement, although all of them were very positive in initiating it. On the other hand, the majority of the tribal women were interested in getting health-related information from public libraries. ‘Community engagement for health literacy’ could be a new formula for tribal communities in this regard.

This study aims to identify the information barriers that the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, other) community encounters when seeking information about sexual orientation. For this study, a qualitative methodology was followed based on a questionnaire that was answered by various groups within the community. The findings reveal that the respondents preferred the Internet when searching for information due to the abundance of resources, easy accessibility and anonymity. However, they found it insufficient to determine their sexuality due to the presence of inaccurate information and hurtful comments from other users. Additionally, only a few of the respondents were aware of the existence of specialized LGBTQ+ libraries. They believed that the lack of financial resources results in these libraries selecting some resources over others. Therefore, libraries can play a key role in serving the LGBTQ+ community by curating collections in relation to their sexual orientation. This could overcome barriers by providing reliable information for the LGBTQ+ community.

The National Library and Archives of Iran is the most important library in the country, taking on tasks such as providing and protecting the written and unwritten national heritage and organizing the services of other libraries in Iran. An assessment of the National Library and Archives of Iran is critical to understanding how the organization contributes to organizational and strategic goals. This article aims to show the rankings and priorities of performance indicators based on the four perspectives of the balanced scorecard framework (resources, access and infrastructure; use; efficiency; and potentials and development) and with use of the analytic hierarchy process. The perspectives of resources, use, efficiency, and potentials and development were rated. The top performance indicators included: ‘Level of user satisfaction with searching the National Library and Archives of Iran’s website’, ‘Percentage of acquired books in any medium and multimedia resources entered by legal deposit’ and ‘Qualitative evaluation using case studies of use and value of the collection and services’. Pervious literature shows various applications of a joint balanced scorecard and analytic hierarchy process. This study applies this integrated framework throughout an organization in a new service field.

This article examines the proposed artificial intelligence policies of the USA, UK, European Union, Canada, and China, and their implications for libraries. As artificial intelligence revolutionizes library operations, it presents complex challenges, such as ethical dilemmas, data privacy concerns, and equitable access issues. The article highlights key themes in these policies, including ethics, transparency, the balance between innovation and regulation, and data privacy. It also identifies areas for improvement, such as the need for specific guidelines on mitigating biases in artificial intelligence systems and navigating data privacy issues. The article further provides practical recommendations for libraries to engage with these policies and develop best practices for artificial intelligence use. The study underscores the need for libraries to not only adapt to these policies but also actively engage with them, contributing to the development of more comprehensive and effective artificial intelligence governance.

The development of digital technologies, devices and resources impacts students’ digital reading habits and learning performance. This article aims to explore the situation of digital reading in Vietnamese universities and survey the factors influencing digital reading. Questionnaires were distributed to library staff and bachelor’s degree students at six universities in Vietnam; 906 valid questionnaires were received back from the students and 96 from the librarians. The data was analysed by using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. The findings reveal that the universities, academic libraries and lecturers had prepared the necessary conditions to support digital reading (i.e. regulations, processes, programmes, digital resources). Another highlighted result indicates that factors concerning students and lecturers had the most important influence on digital reading based on the responses of the library staff and students. The findings of this study will be useful for administrators, faculty members and library staff in designing appropriate solutions and programmes to support digital reading for undergraduate students.

The findings reveal that the universities, academic libraries and lecturers had prepared the necessary conditions to support digital reading (i.e. regulations, processes, programmes, digital resources). Another highlighted result indicates that factors concerning students and lecturers had the most important influence on digital reading based on the responses of the library staff and students. The findings of this study will be useful for administrators, faculty members and library staff in designing appropriate solutions and programmes to support digital reading for undergraduate students.","PeriodicalId":45334,"journal":{"name":"IFLA JOURNAL-INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF LIBRARY ASSOCIATIONS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49242363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article reports from a project on the role of public libraries in language assimilation policies directed against the Meänkieli-speaking Tornedalian minority in the far north of Sweden during the first half of the 20th century. As libraries in the Torne Valley area, bordering on Finland, were maintained under state control, they became tools in the near eradication of Meänkieli in a complex set of policies that were in effect until 1957, promoting a uniform Swedish language and culture. Building on sociological conflict theory and the analysis of unpublished local documentation, the article brings to light conditions previously unknown about the Swedish public libraries in the northernmost part of the country. The article concludes by reflecting on the role of Swedish libraries today as important tools for the revitalization of Meänkieli, aimed at strengthening the identity and visibility of the Tornedalian minority.
