The aim of this study is to analyse the reproductive patterns of the immigrant population and to evaluate their impact on, and implications for, demographic dynamics in Spain. The general hypothesis is that migrant fertility is closely related to the fact and circumstances of migration. Using the 2007 National Immigrant Survey, the results show the existence of a clear fertility pattern. This pattern is characterised by reduced fertility before and during migration, a strong recovery after becoming settled, and a subsequent reduction. The main implication is that this will lead to a significant reduction in migrant fertility, since the inflows have been reduced and the 'recovery' period of the fertility rates of immigrants who arrived before 2007 has passed.

The seasonality of births is an issue that has received much attention in the literature. Empirical evidence has revealed that annual birth distributions have evolved from environmentally-regulated fertility patterns to models that are dominated by socio-cultural factors. This study expands upon this literature by examining the weekly distribution of births and its evolution over the past decades. Using the micro-data of the municipal register files of the Valencian Community (n=3,674,110), we empirically reveal that the current organization of work schedules in the healthcare sector impacts the weekly distribution of births, resulting in the hegemonic position of the medical profession. This has been confirmed by the change in the distribution of births, by days of the week, since the mid-20th century until the present date.

The aim of the paper is to discover how important physical attractiveness is in finding a partner and in the type of partnership sought. Two surveys (2975 and 3004 by the CIS) and several methods were employed: linear probability models and fixed-effect multi-level models. For men, the results show that being unattractive decreases the likelihood of finding a partner, of finding a partner with a university degree, and of finding a partner with a higher educational level. For women, physical attractiveness does not affect the likelihood of any of those events occurring. The study has also found out that physical attractiveness has more of an influence on people with a working class background to find a partner with higher educational attainment. These results are unexpected and pose a challenge to the theory of erotic capital.

EnglishIn this article, we analyse the main reforms introduced in the Portuguese, Spanish and Greek labour-markets since the beginning of the crisis. Based in a documental and statistical analysis, the study takes in consideration the similar institutional, historical and geographic characteristics of these countries, but also their particularities. Results show that the emergency policies tend to resemble and to concentrate on dismissals, contracts, working time, salaries, collective bargaining and working conditions in the public sector. Nonetheless, the pre-crisis structural variations between these countries, together with the different effects that the crisis had in each one of them, help to understand possible differences in terms of results, giving a new contribution to the questioning of the internal homogeneity of the Mediterranean model.

EnglishThis paper presents the results of a mixed-mode survey of the general population using a combination of postal, telephone, and Internet survey protocols. Potential respondents were invited to participate by ordinary mail and were allowed to choose their preferred response mode. The paper focuses on response quality (taking non-responses into consideration), fieldwork time and data collection cost. The results reveal that the Internet survey produces the lowest rate of non-responses and requires significantly less fieldwork time, although it is slightly more costly than the postal survey. However, when differences in cost structure are taken into account, we find that the same number of completed questionnaires could have been obtained through the Internet alone at a cost that is 18.2% lower than the mixed-mode survey.

EnglishIn this article, we analyse the relationship between the intensification of work and organizational flexibility. Specifically, we focus on teamwork, considered as an emblematic organizational strategy of flexible and efficient organizations. The relationship between teamwork, intensity of work and stress is examined using data from Spain's National Survey on Working Conditions. Based on the results, we propose that analysis of the intensity of work be incorporated into social dialogue and the prevention of occupational risks.
