The use of insects as a food source is not a new idea, but it has gained momentum in recent years due to the need for sustainable protein source in livestock feedstuffs and for more environmentally friendly organic waste treatment. In the case of black soldier fly larvae, Hermetia illucens, research has focused on their ability to convert organic waste into usable nutrients and their potential as a protein source for animal and human consumption. In this study, black soldier fly larvae were reared on raw food waste (FW) mixed with garlic peel waste (G) and hydronic growth media waste (H) and the proximate composition and bioactive potential of black soldier fly larvae extract (SFL) were compared. Analysis showed that protein content of SFL fed with G was 4.21% higher and lipid content was 9.93% lower than FW. Similar results were obtained for SFL fed with H. Antioxidant activity of SFL-G was higher than that of SFL-FW and SFL-H. SFL-G treatment exhibited enhanced anti-inflammatory and anti-adipogenesis activities as well compared to SFL-FW. Current results suggested that feeding black soldier fly larvae with food waste added with garlic peel and hydroponic growth media waste resulted in increased nutritional value, polyphenol content and bioactivity for SFLs. In this context, garlic peel waste-added food waste was suggested a promising substrate for black soldier fly larvae to obtain high-quality protein source with enhanced antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-adipogenic potential.

Background: To study the changes in intestinal flora in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and to explore its correlations with micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-21 and serum tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α).
Methods: A total of 150 patients with UC were selected and divided into remission group and seizure group according to the severity of disease. At the same time, 150 healthy people receiving physical examination in the hospital during the same period were selected as control group. The levels of fecal miR-21 and TNF-α in all subjects were determined via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The correlation between miR-21 and TNF-α and their associations with the changes in intestinal bacteria in UC were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The risk factors affecting the occurrence of UC were explored via multivariate logistic regression analysis.

ABSTRACT Objective: to construct and validate a simulated scenario and checklist for the assessment and identification of shockable arrhythmias by nurses in adults hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit. Method: this is a methodological study for the construction of a simulated scenario and checklist, validated by experts, with the application of a pilot test on 36 nursing students between April and September 2021, at a public university in Minas Gerais. The construction stage took place by surveying evidence in the literature. The validity stage was based on instrument assessment by 13 experts, from all over Brazil, being interpreted by calculating the Content Validity Coefficient by a cut-off point equal to 0.8 or 80.0%. To assess internal consistency, Cronbach’s alpha was calculated. Subsequently, a pilot test and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scale were applied. Results: after building the simulated scenario, three rounds were performed to assess the script (21 items) and two for the checklist (six items), reaching an overall Content Validity Coefficient of 0.98 and 0.95, respectively. A Cronbach’s alpha of 0.79 was obtained at the end of assessment. In the pilot test, the scenario was considered adequate, with high scores of satisfaction and self-confidence in learning, confirming its usability. Conclusion: the instrument developed by nurses to assess shockable arrhythmias in adult patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit is valid in terms of content and has good internal consistency.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate factors associated with negative self-rated health among middle-aged women treated at a climacteric outpatient clinic. Method: This is a cross-sectional, analytical study conducted with 116 women assisted in the period between March 2015 and March 2020 at the climacteric outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Cuiabá, MT, Brazil. Data were collected through telephone interviews from October 2020 to January 2021, using a questionnaire containing questions about sociodemographic, health and psychosocial data. Self-rated health was checked by asking the subjects how they rated their health. The association measure used was the prevalence ratio and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Poisson’s multiple regression was used in the multivariate analysis. Results: Most middle-aged women in this study (54.3%) had negative self-rated health. The factor associated with the outcome was menopausal symptoms (p< 0.001), identified in the severe menopausal symptoms category PR= 2.95 (95%CI 1.4-6.3). Conclusion: The higher prevalence of negative self-rated health among the women in this study is probably related to the life stage they are experiencing. Menopausal symptoms are associated with women’s perception of health due to their discomfort and consequent impact on their lives.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the practices that favor breastfeeding performed in the Rooming-In area and satisfaction with the care received according to discharge on exclusive breastfeeding. Method: a quantitative study conducted between July 2020 and September 2021 in a maternity teaching hospital from southern Brazil; a total of 756 puerperal women participated by means of an online questionnaire 20 days after hospital discharge. The data were analyzed in a descriptive way with absolute and relative frequencies, and the chi-square test was applied to verify any statistical difference according to the “discharge on exclusive breastfeeding” outcome. Results: the prevalence of discharge on exclusive breastfeeding was 85.0% and the practices that presented and association with the outcome were guidelines regarding the breastfeeding readiness signs (69.0% versus 57.5%), correct position and latch (94.1% versus 86.7%), free demand (79.2% versus 69.0%), exclusive breastfeeding until the sixth month of life and complemented until two years of age (77.9% versus 67.3%); and the practice of not offering other milk during hospitalization (88.5% versus 17.1%). Satisfaction with the care received was high (95.0%) and presented no association with the outcome of “discharge on exclusive breastfeeding”. Conclusion: most of the women treated had access to the practices that favor breastfeeding, and education in health exerted a positive impact on exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze pediatric patient safety in the administration of blood components. Method: a documentary and retrospective study, developed at a hospital in the Brazilian Midwest region. Data collection took place through medical records and 234 transfusions were identified, performed in 90 patients aged from zero to twelve years old, hospitalized between July and December 2020. An instrument based on good practice guidelines about blood components was used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results: the transfusions were predominantly performed in breastfeeding infants (71.1%). Blood transfusions in critical sectors stood out (86.3%), as well as with indication of a clinical order (87.2%) and prescription of packed red blood cells (75.3%). The Nursing reports identified adverse events (n=05) and incidents (n=13) that were associated with inadequacies between the prescribed and infused volumes and the request and administration time (p<0.001), although no notification was formalized in the institution during the period. Conclusion: the administration of blood components presented nonconformities, which results in risk situations for pediatric patients.

ABSTRACT Objective: to know meanings and demands for the self-management of home-based care for Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplant recipients and to discuss these demands with nurses, aiming at proposing guidelines. Method: a qualitative study based on the convergent care research study developed between December 2020 and August 2021 in a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Service from Juiz de Fora - Minas Gerais, carried out in two stages: semi-structured interview and small group discussion. 17 people participated in the study: 12 transplanted individuals and five nurses. Data analysis was supported by the Iramuteq software and by the synthesis and theorization proposed by convergent care research. Results: in Stage 1, performed with transplanted patients, six classes emerged that were interpreted in four subcorpuses and pointed out the meanings and demands for self-management. In Stage 2, performed with nurses, the demands found in Stage 1 were submitted to reflection in the discussion group and ratified. Based on the findings, the guidelines to meet the health self-management demands of transplanted people were as follows: professional monitoring, adherence to the treatment, maintenance of the prescribed care measures, search for guidelines and information, implications of the diagnosis, restoration of immunity, inclusion in the job market, physical limitations, and changes in everyday habits. Conclusion: the guidelines proposed reflect the understanding of the needs experienced for an individual to adapt to the health/disease process in the post-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation phase, and express the importance of carrying out strategies that promote self-management.

ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the adequacy of using a care-educational technology with video clips for learning the physiology of lactation by the family support network for breastfeeding women. Method: a methodological study guided by the Knowledge Translation in Action Model. The collection procedure was carried out from July to September 2022 in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After the childcare consultation, each puerperal woman indicated one or more members of her support network to participate in the research. In face-to-face interviews, 52 participants answered the following instruments: Assistive Technology Assessment and Face Validation of Educational Technologies in Health. Normality of the variables was verified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The quantitative variables with normal distribution were described by mean and standard deviation. Face Validity Index and Cronbach's Alpha were calculated. Results: the video clip was evaluated as adequate (1.75) in all attributes: Interactivity (1.75), Objectivity (2.00), Relevance and efficacy (2.00) and Clarity (2.00). Face validity was excellent (0.969). Both instruments obtained Cronbach's Alpha values of 0.883 and 0.852, respectively, indicating reliability in this population. Conclusion: the video clip for learning the physiology of lactation is suitable for use by the family support network for breastfeeding mothers.
