PERCEPTIONS OF BISEXUAL IDENTITY, OUTNESS, AND MENTAL HEALTH AMONG RACIALLY DIVERSE BISEXUAL WOMEN AND MEN.

This study, employing data from the Women's and Men's Daily Experiences Studies, examines relationships between outness, anticipated binegativity, internalized binegativity, bisexual meta-perceptions, and mental health among 235 racially diverse bisexual adults. Path analyses via MPLUS explored whether several measures of negative bisexual identity perceptions were associated with relationships between outness and mental health, while moderation analyses assessed if positive identity perceptions moderate this relationship. Outness showed no direct association with anxiety or depression. However, anticipated binegativity was related to increased anxiety and depression. The association between outness and the different measures of negative identity perceptions varied. Additionally, community connectedness was inversely related to depression. These findings emphasize the necessity for additional research addressing bisexual-specific stressors, fostering positive identity perceptions, and enhancing community support for improving the mental well-being of bisexual individuals, particularly those that are people of color.

Colliding Identities? The Role of Multiple Identities Among Historically Underrepresented Students Pursuing Scientific Research Careers.
Q3 PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL Pub Date : 2025-01-01 Epub Date: 2024-12-28 DOI: 10.1080/15298868.2024.2447253

Motivated by Identity Integration and Threat theories, this preregistered study examined associations between scientist and ethnic identities and future scientific research career intentions among African American and Hispanic STEM undergraduates (N=1,247). Scientist identity was positively correlated with junior-year ethnic identity and predicted senior-year scientific research career intentions. Neither scientist nor ethnic identities predicted senior-year self-esteem (which may influence science career decisions). However, minority science training program (MSTP) enrollment influenced the relationship between scientist identity and self-esteem, and between ethnic identity (belongingness) and scientific research career intentions. Neither ethnicity nor gender were moderators. The results indicate that different identities can relate to one another and uniquely influence scientific research career decisions among African American and Hispanic students, especially among MSTP enrollees.

Openness to Being Gossiped About: Understanding Gossip from the Target's Perspective.

It is often assumed that, if given the choice, people would prefer not to be gossiped about. We address this assumption by investigating reactions to gossip from the perspective of its potential targets. In two nationally representative samples, we assess whether people are ever open to being the topic of other people's gossip and find a general aversion to being talked about, unless positively. However, some people reliably do prefer to be the focus of gossip: A meta-analytic summary showed that being male, and more narcissistic predicted a greater desire to be the focus of gossip, even when that gossip is negative. And, older adults had lower desire to be positively gossiped about. We also test in confirmatory experiments whether people correctly perceive others' preferences, and find that people overestimate the extent to which others want to be gossiped about, but only when the gossip is positive.

Anti-social behavior and soccer identities: different continents, same mindset?

Although most soccer fans support their teams peacefully, anti-social fan behavior continues to appear across the globe. We tested the roles of identity fusion and membership to an extreme fan group (ultras) in explaining fan disorder in two understudied contexts: Indonesia (Study 1) and Australia (Study 2). Incidents of violence and antisocial behavior were rarely reported among general Indonesian (9%) or Australian fans (6%) but were significantly higher among their respective ultras groups (37%; 20%). Identity fusion predicted antisocial behavior, especially when combined with fan group membership. Fusion explained anti-social behaviors better than identification or social dominance orientation. Understanding the motivators of intergroup violence is crucial to devise more effective ways of channeling cohesion among group members into peaceful forms of prosocial action.
