This study re-evaluates the concept of destination value to develop and propose a solution to the theoretical dilemmas encountered in tourism research. For this purpose, a hierarchical structure including the intrinsic and extrinsic values of destinations was developed first. A mixed methodology was adopted to achieve the research objectives. In the qualitative part of the study, data was gathered through literature review and document analysis. In the quantitative part, data was collected from field experts. Then importance weights for the themes and subthemes forming destination value were measured by fuzzy criteria weighting using pairwise comparisons technique. The key results obtained with this study supported the validity of the distinction between the intrinsic and extrinsic values of destinations. Analysis revealed that any approach based on intrinsic and extrinsic destination values is suitable when dealing with the information from a range of disciplines.

For tourism to be considered sustainable, the industry needs to be transparent in measuring, monitoring and reporting all emissions to actively contribute to the decarbonisation of the economy. The purpose of this study was to identify to what level tourism decarbonisation has been discussed, assessed, and planned for globally. For this study, a content analysis of national tourism plans was implemented to identify if the carbon footprint of tourism has been assessed, establish a unified approach to measure tourism emissions and determine what level of tourism decarbonisation strategies are currently in place. The findings in this study identified that the carbon footprint of tourism has not been assessed globally, lacks serious discussion and planning for tourism decarbonisation. Crucially, baseline data for tourism emissions are not available, as a result, tourism policymakers cannot monitor and manage the level of decarbonisation in tourism. Furthermore, a unified approach to measure tourism emissions needs to be agreed upon to ensure that each country measures the same criteria. Consequently, allowing policymakers to compare international tourism emissions and establish if tourism is actively transitioning towards a low-carbon industry. Climate change is a significant crisis facing humanity, and until now, this research has not been completed.

Entrepreneurial ecosystems in tourism: An analysis of characteristics from a systems perspective

This paper transfers the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) to tourism. First it investigates the characteristic of an EE in tourism by comparing it to an existing model. Second, the sector-specificity of the EE in tourism is discussed by referring to the system’s boundaries, operations and purposes, thus linking research on EEs in tourism more strongly to key concepts of systems theory. This is done by evaluating 19 interviews from South Tyrol in a qualitative approach using GABEK (Holistic Processing of Linguistic Complexity), which includes rule-based coding of interviews and visualisation of results in a network graph. Results show that the evaluated EE in tourism shares features familiar to EEs in other business sectors. This is an elevated role of long-standing entrepreneurs, social networks, governance, shared knowledge and learning. However, there are also tourism-specific features, such as culture and landscape, which directly provide resources for entrepreneurship. Governance does not emerge from the interaction of entrepreneurs, but from public bodies. The system’s output is not ambitious entrepreneurship, but innovative, sustainable and collective entrepreneurship. However, there is the need for further research to clearly determine the system’s sector specificity.

Despite its importance to both tourism destinations and scholars, there is no record of research via bibliometric analysis of the length of stay (LOS). This paper, therefore, aims to provide a bibliometric analysis of LOS in tourism, based on publications in the Web of Science database (WOS). For this purpose, 60 documents published in top- tier tourism journals were analysed through bibliometric analysis. The research data was processed, and bibliographic display maps were created using the Visualisation of Similarities (VOS) viewer software. This study focuses mainly on 10 parameters, such as top contributing authors, countries and organisations, the most cited articles, the annual number of publications, the co-occurrence of author keywords in papers, the co-citation analysis of authors and journals, and the bibliographic coupling of countries and authors.

This study is intended to examine the relationship between tourist attractions (natural, cultural and historical) and tourist flows. In the study, secondary data for six provinces and 110 sub-provinces in the Southwestern Anatolia region of Turkey, visited by local and foreign tourists, are used. Four of these provinces have a coastline to the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean. In this context, overnight data of tourists for 110 sub-provinces and the printed and online materials and overnight data of tourists are used to identify attractions. In this study, mapping analysis, local and global Moran’s I, the classical regression and spatial regression models are benefited. Primarily, the spillover of attractions through maps and the distribution of tourist flows are presented in the study. When the relationship between tourist attractions and tourist flows are examined, the results of our analyses show that the Global Moran’s I value is 0.25 and that those 110 sub-provinces could be similar in terms of tourist flow. It was determined whether there is a global clustering based on Global Moran’s I value, and then the similar clusters, that is, similar sub-provinces in terms of tourist flow, were determined using the spectral clustering method. In addition, the neighborhood relationship and neighborhood interactions in terms of tourist flow are determined using local indicators of spatial analysis (LISA) alongside the Spectral Clustering Method. Finally, in the study field, the relationship between cultural, historical, and natural tourist attractions and tourist flow is explained using the classical regression model and the spatial regression model. The spatial-based models, especially the SEM, improve the model performance compared to the corresponding OLS model. In conclusion, it is found that there is a positive correlation between tourist flows and natural and historical attractions of the region, but a negative relationship between tourist flows and cultural attractions. Destination management implications are discussed.

Accessibility in tourist sites in Spain: Does it really matter when choosing a destination?

This work aims to analyse and characterise accessibility in tourism —defined as the conditions for people with access needs— and its relationship with tourism performance. Accessibility is a critical concept —to be defined and measured in a rigorous way— that helps shed light on the particularities of the phenomena, considering consumers and producers of tourism. Spain's solid background in accessible tourism portrays the possibility of elaborating different accessible indicators. We propose and identify an exhaustive set of proxy measures for accessibility under the accessible tourism theoretical framework of the tourism travel chain. We also computed an accessibility index using disaggregated data of 152 Spanish tourist sites (National Statistics Institute of Spain), introducing those measures of accessibility as explanatory variables in a model of tourism performance of sun and cultural destinations. Our results show that accessibility seems not to be a determinant in tourist sites' performance. Sun destinations have better tourism performances than cultural ones, having or not accessible conditions. The findings not only reveal the need to improve and consolidate accessible conditions in cultural destinations, but also disseminate and deepen information channels, especially for people with access needs, before choosing a destination.

Employee turnover rates in the tourism industry are globally considerably high. Research on the topic has focused mostly on environmental and situational factors, with little attention given to employees’ different characteristic. In the current research the effect of the Big Five personality traits and commitment on turnover intentions of lodging employees was examined. The effect of personality on commitment was examined, as well. Utilizing structural equation modelling (SEM), emotional stability and organizational commitment were found to be predictors of turnover intentional behaviour. An additional impact of occupation commitment-related variables on the prediction of organizational commitment was observed. Finally, conscientiousness was found to be the best predictor of organizational commitment. The implications of these results for future research are discussed, as well.

This paper analyses the determinants of the tourism demand, following an approach which innovates in a) using spatial models applying a well-founded specification selection process b) exploring the effects of two types of institutions, corruption and Rule of Law, and c) assessing the spillover effects of the COVID-19 shock on the international tourism demand in Portugal and Spain. The study is conducted using a sample of 109 countries for the period 1995-2018. It shows that tourism shocks in neighbouring countries, and particularly the coronavirus pandemic, significantly affect tourism demand in the host country with the same sign as the shock itself, and that the Rule of Law of the destination country influences positively on tourists’ inflow. Corruption does not seem to have significant effects on the tourist demand of the host country. From these results, we derive that national governments should provide fair and transparent legal frameworks that generate security for potential tourists. Moreover, national authorities of neighbouring countries are advised to cooperate in both promoting tourism and adopting coordinated actions against negative external shocks that hit them symmetrically, such as COVID-19.

The study is conducted using a sample of 109 countries for the period 1995-2018. It shows that tourism shocks in neighbouring countries, and particularly the coronavirus pandemic, significantly affect tourism demand in the host country with the same sign as the shock itself, and that the Rule of Law of the destination country influences positively on tourists’ inflow. Corruption does not seem to have significant effects on the tourist demand of the host country. From these results, we derive that national governments should provide fair and transparent legal frameworks that generate security for potential tourists. Moreover, national authorities of neighbouring countries are advised to cooperate in both promoting tourism and adopting coordinated actions against negative external shocks that hit them symmetrically, such as COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42102590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed various obstacles and restrictions for the tourism and hospitality industry. This paper adopts the concept of the behavioural immune system to discuss tourism and hospitality customers’ potential behaviours during the pandemic and provide business strategies that can address these behaviours. The behavioural immune system is a motivational system that determines individuals’ behaviours to pathogen infection. First, this study introduces the mechanism of the behavioural immune system including environmental evaluation and aversive perception, aversive emotional and cognitive responses, and avoidance behaviours. It also provides examples in the guest service context to better portray the mechanism. Second, the study suggests specific measures for tourism and hospitality businesses that may help them to prevent the aversive and avoidance responses of customers triggered by their behavioural immune system during the pandemic. Then, the study integrates customers’ responses and businesses’ measures in a framework, which extends the literature on customers’ behaviour in the hospitality and tourism context. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time the concept of behavioural immune system is adopted to discuss customers’ behaviours towards tourism and hospitality services during a pandemic.
