The study analyses the searches for digital tourist information that different types of tourists, with different characteristics and connectivity preferences, make at destinations on the main topics they may require, allowing to know which digital sources they use, but also at what moment and in what situation. The study was based on an online survey that asked users about searches for tourist information they made at the destination during their last trip. The results show that tourists increasingly seek more tourist information at the destination, and search differently depending on the topic and their connectivity preferences in the different digital channels and locations. The results will allow Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) to provide tourists with suitable information, at the time and place they so require.

The development of sustainable tourism has the wellbeing of residents as its primary objective, so it is of great importance to consider their perceptions and attitudes towards tourism. This study analyses residents' perceived tourism-related benefits and costs in their community, personal economic benefits of tourism, and overall wellbeing in two types of destinations - mature and developing. In addition, the study identifies determinants of resident wellbeing. Understanding these determinants could be useful for destination managers to gain resident support and improve their wellbeing. The results show that there are significant differences between residents’ perceptions of different types of destinations on all observed concepts. The findings also suggest that perceived overall wellbeing is influenced by a number of factors: place of residence (mature/developing destination), level of support for tourism development, income, age, and perceived benefits and costs of tourism. However, perceived personal economic benefits of tourism were not associated with wellbeing.

In order to propose a repositioning toolkit, this research addresses the essence of the daytime tourism milieu of the Hungarian capital Budapest’s nightly party zone and formulates the following two research questions: (1) What are the available elements of the daytime tourism milieu of Budapest’s party zone? and (2) How can this milieu enhance tourist experience for leveraging a sense of place in a future post-Covid-19 era? The data for this research were collected with the help of 85 undergraduates, who were given the task of taking 3 photos, as if they were tourists, aiming to capture the best reflection of the daytime tourism milieu of Budapest’s party zone. A database of 255 photos was analysed through visual content analysis. Additionally, each image was assigned a location of the photo, five hashtags and a short description. The descriptions of the photos were analysed by Python programming and calculations. The findings show the most important research outcomes concerning Budapest’s party zone, focusing on the daytime values of the district. The research identified the “creative milieu”’, “Jewish heritage milieu” and “gastronomic milieu” as the most important daytime profiles of the party zone. Based on the findings, the authors propose a repositioning toolkit and a strategy which, on the one hand, will develop a stronger sense of place in the case of the tourism milieu of Budapest’s party zone and, on the other hand, will position the party zone not only as a place of nightlife but also as a venue of daytime tourism.

Tourism contribution to the SDGs: applying a well-being lens

Human well-being is an essential dimension of sustainable development. This implies that an understanding of well-being outcomes and associated indicators is necessary to determine the success of the global tourism industry in meeting the SDG 2030 Agenda. It is argued that assessment of tourism’s progress toward achievement of the SDGs is incomplete without a full accounting of the outcomes of tourism development on human well-being. In addition to standard indicators of tourism industry performance, a ‘well-being lens’ is proposed comprising indicators that inform tourism stakeholders about changes in resident well-being, promoting sustainable development, and enabling a more comprehensive assessment of tourism’s progress in fulfilling each SDG. The implications of this original proposal for tourism participation in the 2030 SDG agenda are highlighted and discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes in all spheres of public life. Economically, as well as in terms of behavioural change, tourism has been one of the most affected sectors and nearly two years after the crisis began, the future is still unclear. This paper focuses on changes in tourist behaviour by tracking the shifts and persisting patterns within a one-year period. The study is based on two surveys conducted online in April 2020 and April 2021 and display the trends for a very specific and understudied context – a European country characterized by general distrust to the severity of the virus as well as towards imposed measures against the disease distribution at both national and international levels. Our findings question the wide-spread assumption that health-related concerns are the primary factor affecting tourist behaviour in the pandemic and identify travel restrictions and income as having major significance. Another important observation is the lack of significant changes within the study period, which examines two different situations: the onset of the pandemic that brought a great shock at all levels and a year later, when both objective circumstances and subjective perceptions were not expected to be the same.

This scoping review provides an overview of the literature on tourism routes, concerning 1) the categorization of tourism routes, 2) how the research has been conducted, in terms of methodologies and main research themes, and 3) future research paths. The review includes documents from four databases, written in English, published until May 2020 and focused on tourism routes as organisations of stakeholders under a unified theme to achieve common goals. Based on 194 documents, regional-scale routes under the theme of food and drink are identified as the commonest. The main research theme is route development. Empirical studies, qualitative approaches, primary data usage, and data collection triangulation techniques predominate. Lastly, future research should focus mainly on route planning and management.

Our research addresses the perceived authenticity by the local community, as a means of enhancing Industrial Heritage Tourism. It aims to explore the influence of perceived authenticity in the future intentions of the local community, concerning a heritage tourism destination. Data was collected from São João da Madeira residents, Portugal, and the sample consisted of 389 respondents. The statistical technique applied was the structural equation model (SEM). Our findings suggest that perceived heritage plays a significant role in residents’ attitudes towards tourism development support, their own participation ideals, and their attachment to the place. These findings will contribute to both practical and theoretical research, as they aim to enhance current knowledge on residents’ perceived authenticity, being an understudied approach; furthermore, it offers a valuable opportunity to consider residents in the management and planning of an industrial tourism destination. This study analyses the outcomes of the obtained results. Additionally, it presents the main limitations, suggests future lines of research, and provides practical and theoretical data for both public and private entities, aiming at future improvements in the development of industrial heritage tourism.

“Seeing a country with your own eyes”: The impact of immersion experiences in language travel “用自己的眼睛看一个国家”:沉浸式体验对语言旅行的影响
IF 2.3 Q2 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2022-08-05 DOI: 10.54055/ejtr.v32i.2622

This study approaches immersion experiences in the context of language tourism. Immersion is here understood as tourists’ extensive engagement and interaction with the members of the host culture. Previous studies have pointed out that language tourism implies a deeper contact with locals; however, other studies have observed that many language programmes abroad are not always as immersive as expected. These contradictory findings suggest that there may be a tremendous variation in contact with locals in the context of language tourism. Hence, the present mixed methods study uses interviews with 22 language travellers, and 1,011 survey answers to address the question of how language tourists who had an intense contact with local residents differ – in terms of profile and travel experiences – from those language travellers who did not have such an intense contact. There are significant differences between these groups. Those who had a more intense contact with locals are more likely to be intrinsically motivated by an interest for the local culture, to travel alone, to report higher levels of fluency, more frequent accommodation at homestays, and greater engagement in a wider range of activities at the destination.

Hence, the present mixed methods study uses interviews with 22 language travellers, and 1,011 survey answers to address the question of how language tourists who had an intense contact with local residents differ – in terms of profile and travel experiences – from those language travellers who did not have such an intense contact. There are significant differences between these groups. Those who had a more intense contact with locals are more likely to be intrinsically motivated by an interest for the local culture, to travel alone, to report higher levels of fluency, more frequent accommodation at homestays, and greater engagement in a wider range of activities at the destination.","PeriodicalId":51784,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Tourism Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46463621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Risk is fundamental in the choice, evaluation, and behaviour of tourists, consequently understanding tourists’ shifting preferences toward a destination is imperative in the post-COVID era. Thus, this study aims to examine the impact of push motivations on the intention to travel to a European and domestic destination, analyse the interrelated effects between components of risk perception, test the moderating effect of risk perception and investigate the influence of gender and educational level. Based on 1315 tourists and using structural equation modelling, it was possible to find that (1) the motivation to relax and acquire knowledge, and the perception of the destination as safe are predictors of domestic travel; (2) the motivation to acquire knowledge and the risk perception as similar between European and domestic trips positively influence the intention to travel to European destination; (3) travel risk and, indirectly, safety concerns and social risk are deterrent factors of travel intentions; (4) risk perception doesn’t affect the reason why people travel; and (5) gender doesn’t affect travel motivation, intentions or risk perception, but education level enhances the negative effect of social risk. Mostly, this study adds to the literature by detailing how different motivations and risk perceptions affect travel intentions.
