A large number of lmlk (57) and ‘private’ (18) Judahite stamp impressions have been unearthed at Tel Beth-Shemesh. All but one are of the early types dated to the late 8th century BCE. The site has not yielded any lmlk stamp impressions of the late types dated to the early 7th century BCE, concentric-circle incision types from the middle of the 7th century or rosette stamp impressions from the late 7th and early 6th century BCE. This information helps in the reconstruction of the history of this significant lowland center during the period of ‘Pax-Assyriaca’ in the southern Levant.

A 1st–2nd Century CE Assembly Room (Synagogue?) in a Jewish Estate at Tel Rekhesh, Lower Galilee

A Jewish farmstead dated to the 1st–2nd centuries CE was discovered during excavations at Tel Rekhesh in the Lower Galilee. In the centre of the western perimeter wall of the structure, a 9-m-square assembly room with an ashlar block bench along the walls was unearthed. It had an entrance in the north and two bases for pillars in the centre to support a flat roof. Given all these features, it has been suggested that the building was a rural synagogue. If correct, this building is one of a small group of synagogues in the Land of Israel that dates to the late Second Temple period. The proximity of Tel Rekhesh to Nazareth offers another perspective to this discovery—an association with Jesus and his ministry in the Galilee.

A substantial amount of macro-botanical remains has been recorded at Tel Megiddo since the initiation of the renewed excavations in 1992. We constructed a database with 1,162 identified samples and analysed them diachronically. This dataset enables us to trace environmental trends and human impact on the vegetation in the vicinity of the site during the Bronze and Iron Ages (∼3,500–500 BCE). The earlier periods in the studied sequence are characterised by a higher availability of common natural arboreal elements (oak, conifers and terebinth) and the later periods by a dramatically reduced presence of these elements, with a much stronger occurrence of anthropogenically dependent species (olive), foreign species (cedar of Lebanon, sycamore fig), and less prevalent forest/maquis elements. Our investigation also provides some context for the appearance of both horticultural and rare/special species in the assemblage (almond, walnut, myrtle, laurel, sage). The appearance of prestigious species such as the imported cedar in one sector of the site (Area H) provides botanical support to other finds which rendered this area an elite neighbourhood.

After studying new photographs of the Mesha Stele and the squeeze of the stele prepared before the stone was broken, we dismiss Lemaire’s proposal to read (‘House of David’) on Line 31. It is now clear that there are three consonants in the name of the monarch mentioned there, and that the first is a beth. We cautiously propose that the name on Line 31 be read as Balak, the king of Moab referred to in the Balaam story in Numbers 22–24.

The article presents two pottery assemblages exposed in 2017 at Tel Beth-Shemesh, in the Level 3 Iron IIA Judahite administrative centre that replaced the Iron I Canaanite villages of Levels 7–4. The assemblages contribute to the study of the typological-chronological development of Iron IIA pottery in Judah. Both date to the mid-/late Iron IIA, i.e., the first half/mid-9th century BCE. Two storage jars in the assemblages bear finger impressions. Contrary to recent suggestions that these impressions testify to early Iron IIA Judahite or Israelite centralised administration, we understand them as a Bronze Age phenomenon affiliated with the Canaanite population of the Shephelah and the northern valleys that reached its apogee during the late Iron I/early Iron IIA.

A Judahite envoy is probably mentioned alongside an Israelite envoy in one of the Wine Lists from Nimrud (Calah) dated to the 780s BCE—that is, the time of Jeroboam II. This reference antedates by about 50 years the earliest available mention of Judah in extra-biblical sources. In light of the enmity between Israel and Judah during the time of Joash and Amaziah, the article examines the significance of the new evidence for evaluating the relations of the two kingdoms at the time of Jeroboam II (786–746 BCE) and Uzziah (788–737 BCE).

Masons’ marks, though often not fully documented, interpreted and researched, are well-attested at sites from the Classical periods. This article presents a complete study of masons’ marks from Antiochia Hippos of the Decapolis. The survey of the site yielded 374 Roman-period marks: 359 used for accounts and 15 probably used for indication of assembly order. The presence of masons’ marks on some of the structures at Hippos and other Roman-period sites in Syria-Palaestina points to details of the organization of work. The marks show chronological dependency, and consequently can be used to indicate relative and even absolute dating.

Bronze Age trade in the Eastern Mediterranean is well attested in south Levantine archaeological research, with imported vessels generally playing a significant role in the ceramic assemblage. While the majority of these vessels are found repeatedly at many different sites, there are cases where a rare find sheds new light on the way in which trade patterns are perceived. Such is the case with two fully restored pithoi found in a Late Bronze IIB building at Tel Burna. This paper presents the context in which the pithoi were uncovered, followed by a study of the vessels themselves, including their typology, provenance, volume and contents, as well as the nature of Late Bronze Age trade in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In this article we explore interregional trade at the polis of Antiochia Hippos during the Roman period. The discovery of chronologically well-defined Roman-period ceramic assemblages at the site provides an opportunity for a diachronic study of Roman period commerce between Hippos, the only polis in the southern Golan, and the neighbouring Galilee. Results of micromorphological analysis of common Roman period kitchenware indicate that while in the Early Roman period most of the Kefar Hananya types found at Hippos were imported from the Galilee, by the Late Roman period, most of the Kefar Hananya types found there were produced locally in the Golan.

The discovery of chronologically well-defined Roman-period ceramic assemblages at the site provides an opportunity for a diachronic study of Roman period commerce between Hippos, the only polis in the southern Golan, and the neighbouring Galilee. Results of micromorphological analysis of common Roman period kitchenware indicate that while in the Early Roman period most of the Kefar Hananya types found at Hippos were imported from the Galilee, by the Late Roman period, most of the Kefar Hananya types found there were produced locally in the Golan.","PeriodicalId":51839,"journal":{"name":"Tel Aviv-Journal of the Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University","volume":"45 1","pages":"273 - 288"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03344355.2018.1494789","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47322037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article I examine whether there is a relationship between aniconism and name type on Iron II stamp seals. Specifically, I investigate whether Hebrew and non-Hebrew stamped seals with a theophoric name are more often aniconic than those with a non-theophoric name. I also analyse whether Hebrew stamped seals with a Yahwistic name are more often aniconic than those with a non-Yahwistic name. The study reveals that there is a link between aniconism and stamp seals: approximately half of all stamp seals are aniconic, while almost all bullae and stamp seals on jars are aniconic. Seals with a Yahwistic name are significantly more often aniconic than those with a non-Yahwistic name. Thus, notwithstanding the contribution of literacy to aniconism, I suggest that image prohibition played a role in the evolution toward aniconism in Hebrew seals.
