Profesor in akademik Matjaž Kmecl je predstavnik generacije mojih spoštovanih univerzitetnih profesorjev geografije in zgodovine ljubljanske Filozofske fakultete. V mojih študentskih letih sem ga srečeval zlasti na hodnikih fakultete, pogosto zatopljenega v živahne pogovore s sodelavci in študenti slavistike.

The article presents various hypotheses on the origin of the language of the so-called Freising Fragments (Slovene Brižinski/Freisinški spomeniki, Latin Monumenta Frisingensia = MF), three Slavic texts written c. 972–1039, which are critically assessed from the viewpoint of the theory and methodology of historical linguistics. In fact, the arguments in favour of the various genealogical linguistic attributions of the Slavic language of these High Medieval manuscript texts are very heterogeneous, i.e. historical, palaeographic, textual, and historical linguistic. However, the genealogical linguistic or dialectological attribution of any linguistic system is possible only on the basis of historical linguistic analysis of the latter. In doing this, linguistic criteria are prioritized following a “bottom-up” principle, i.e. phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary.

The article focuses on the writing of novels in the 20th and 21st centuries that relate to the Slovenian minority in Carinthia, and at the same time highlights the development, main thematic lines and linguistic characteristics of the minority‘s novelistic production itself. Already in the years following the 1920 plebiscite in Carinthia, the themes of war, borders, linguistic and other conflicts predominanted. After the Second World War, the focus shifted to assimilation politics, National Socialism, the oppression of the Slovene language and the Slovene minority, the Partisan movement and the consequences of this period. These themes were first written about mainly by authors from Slovenia, then by minority writers, and in recent years also by other authors writing in German. While the middle and older generation of Slovene authors in Carinthia continues to write about the war, minority and linguistic issues, most of the younger generation deals with other topics and often chooses to write in German.

The essay revolves around an intriguing part of the still relatively unexplored dramatic opus of Matjaž Kmecl, in which the author explores the Slovenian mythical motif of the beautiful Vida. The analysis focuses on his mono-drama Lepa Vida ali problem svetega Ožbalta (Beautiful Vida or the Problem of Saint Ožbalt), through which the author enters into a dialogical relationship with a series of Slovenian authors who interpret this key myth of Slovenian literature. The play is a specific continuation of Cankar’s Beautiful Vida, primarily through occasional references to the central motif. On the one hand, the essay will explore the relationship between Kmecl’s Beautiful Vida and Cankar’s prototext. On the other hand, attention will be given to two interpretations of the motif of the beautiful Vida in the 1970s, when Matjaž Kmecl and Rudi Šeligo reimagined and reinterpreted it in innovative ways. These interpretations will be compared and placed in the broader context of contemporary Slovenian drama. While Cankar’s Beautiful Vida was already a vision of longing, and Šeligo’s Vida attempts to formally follow the narrative of a folk song but offers its own and partly new vision of Beautiful Vida through the reinterpretation of lyrical work. But it is Kmecl who radically breaks away from the Slovenian myth, freeing it from Prešeren’s dichotomy and Cankar’s longing.
