Among the archaeological areas buried by the Vesuvian eruption of 79 A.D., the Oplontis’ site offers the most significant monumental evidence of the Pompeian suburbs. Its architectures, brought back to light at different times, were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List on 6th December 1997 and present today different problems of conserva- tion and accessibility influenced by the operations related to its discovery and by the territorial context. The Oplontis’ site rises in a degraded context of the city of Torre Annunziata (NA), poorly served by infrastructures and services able to connect it to the nearby archaeological area of Pompeii and to the main tourist flows. The contribution aims to deepen the knowledge of the Oplontis' villas to evaluate possible strategies of enhancement and improvement of the enjoyment related to the acquisition and use of structures adjacent to the archaeological site such as the "the Royal Arms Factory" historical military complex in disuse.

The historic center of Florence, universally recognized as a monumental unicum, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982. Although the city is generally known worldwide as the cradle of the Renaissance, most of the city walls of the historic center date back to the latest building transformations. Through the study of the main urban transformations carried out under the government of Pietro Leopoldo up to the assignment of Florence as the capital of the kingdom of Italy, this contribution traces the urban evolution of the modern history of Florence and reflects on the image of today's city, a result of the stratification of the epochs. Furthermore, the contribution collects some examples of recent interventions carried out on the building fronts that allow us to reflect on the issues and criticalities of the conservation and safeguarding of the urban landscape in its totality and complexity.

The boundary of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches in Matera, UNESCO World Heritage Site, is characterized by an historical and anthropological value in which the signs of man are strictly related to the signs of nature. It includes the Church of the Madonna delle Vergini (caved into the stone as a lot of dwellings in the Sassi and mentioned in documents as far back as the 16th century), the only rupestrian church open to cult of faithful until today. A place of historical and artistic memory, it is a synthesis of the territory's settlement modalities that describe the changes of times and cultures. In it are expressions of ancient popular traditions, now lost. These traces, in their ‘fragile’ testimony, represent an opportunity for study and critical and multidisciplinary analysis necessary for a design approach aimed at recovering the values of the past, reinforcing new scenarios for the enjoyment of material and immaterial values, belonging to the religious and rupestrian culture.

Criterion (ii) of the 10 World Heritage Criteria describes heritage as the result of "interchange" between different cultures. The definition of criterion (ii) was modified from "influence" to " interchange" by the 1996 Operational Guide- lines. It is understandable that the view of World Heritage on cultural heritage has also changed from "one direction" cultural impact to "cultural interaction". Half a century after the adoption of the World Heritage Convention, it is necessary to review whether this criterion is properly applied to cultural heritage. But, for a considerable number of listed sites, there is a gap in the recognition and interpretation of the value of criterion (ii) and the site. This paper recognizes the basic notion of "exchange of human values”, which has not been studied before and uses the evolutionary chronology of criterion (ii) to interpret the intent of the change. The interpretation identifies the problem and discusses future considerations for criterion (ii).

The site of Lalibela is the result of Tertiary volcanic activity which led to the formation of a vast outcrop of basaltic slag from which churches were carved. This reddish rock which is particularly suitable for carving, is extremely interactive with water. It was beneficial for the impressive excavation phases, but is now problematic for conservation purposes. Digging meant either the penetration of water into the massif and its erosion, but also the protection of the monuments from water stagnation. This is a very paradoxical situation in which water plays an alternately positive and negative role. Due to its sacred dimension, any intervention on the rock must be discussed and validated by the community. 3D technologies were used to carry out an assessment of the state of the site, to create a virtual 3D model that can be accessed and consulted remotely by all the specialists faced to the conservation problem; to trace the historical evolution of the site.

Near Piazza Armerina (Enna), at the beginning of the cen. XX, the remains of the Roman Villa del Casale (4th century AD), with rich mosaic floors, were discovered. After the first restoration, in the mid-fifties of the cen. XX, the architect Minissi and C. Brandi designed a stable protection and system for the use of the remains of the villa. The roof was made with modern materials: aluminum profiles and sheets of glass and perspex, which evoked the ancient volumes, while maintaining the authenticity of the remains. The arrangement, due to lack of maintenance, has been a source of deterioration for the mosaics, and in fact since 2007 the works for their destruction and replacement have begun, according to a project (commissioner V. Sgarbi, arch. G. Meli) that requires a vision both external and internal unsatisfactory. Even if the problems related to water infiltration and microclimatic data appear solved, as well as those of enhancement and use, thanks to the implementation of the Management Plan (2012), the overall vision refers to warehouses or deposits that cover remains of extraordinary beauty.

The relationship between the historic city and the businesses that form an essential testimony of the historical and cultural urban evolution is an emerging theme on the international scene. The research program has analyzed the traditional economic and social context of the centre of Florence in relation to the city’s urban zoning and building facades. The study highlighted the need to integrate the documentation and survey phases of the physical realities of the places of commerce with the recording of intangible cultural heritage. The latter are strongly interlinked with the authenticity of a place its features, whose disappearance may irreversibly change the environment itself. The introduction of this patrimonial category, with the UNESCO convention of 2003, led to the development of investigation tools and protocols that also involved, specifically, the scientific sector of architectural-urban design and survey to evaluate the impact of intangible features on the evolution of the city’s image over time.

The Amalfi Coast represents a unicum in which the complexity is due to the coexistence of natural singularities and multiple traces resulting from the adaptation made by man to the harsh orography and to the scarcity of resources. Included in the World Heritage List in 1997, the area of the UNESCO perimeter is placed at the centre of the programmatic guidelines of the Management Plan which articulates the objectives around the themes of knowledge, protection, conservation, enhancement, and communication of (and for) coastal cultural heritage. Given these premises, the contribution aims to present a critical balance between the prospects for intervention and the operations concretely defined for the conservation of the cultural landscape of the Amalfi Coast, paying attention to the fate of the proto-industrial heritage (paper mills, ironworks, mills, and hydraulic works), largely abandoned and which requires targeted strategies for the recognition of specificities and the mitigation of intrinsic vulnerabilities.

Since the 1970’s to the present day, our notions of world heritage and archaeological heritage have changed greatly, a fact that is reflected in the different conventions and charters of ICOMOS and UNESCO. In this research we explore what these changes have been, the state of the art of rock art worldwide, and what are the trends towards the future of heritage declarations, delving into the specific case of outdoor rock art, since its fragile and accessible nature requires specific management plans appropriate to its needs and characteristics, and how the growing trend of naming cultural landscapes as world heritage can be a powerful tool for the conservation, protection and dissemination of these heritage assets and their environments. The main objective of our research lies on the identification of the main features of open-air rock art on the UNESCO World Heritage List, establishing their current situation as to their preservation and social awareness and the policies developed in each particular case. This will be done through research and bibliographical approximation of various research sources, as well as official resources already mentioned: World Conventions, recommendations and ICOMOS charters as reference instruments in the declarations and management strategies of archaeological heritage and rock art.

The introduction of Hoffmann kiln was a crucial turning point for the advance in bricks production techniques. The development of typological features of this kind of factory involved a high level of specialization of its spaces, but it led also to a lowered interior flexibility that makes particularly difficult its re-use after the building disposal. The possible balance between needs of conservation and building recovery of this industrial heritage is the main topic of a research that includes the listing of Hoffmann kilns in some areas of the Central Italy, the development of a proper operational methodology and its validation on two case studies located on the coasts of Abruzzo and Lazio regions and used as new cultural incubators.
