Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji perkembangan terkini karya-karya tafsir di Indonesia dan Iran. Kedua negara ini memiliki perbedaan dari aspek dasar negara dan paham keagamaan penduduknya. Indonesia bukan negara Islam, berasaskan Pancasila, dan mayoritas penduduknya menganut Islam Sunni. Adapun Iran adalah sebuah Republik Islam dan mayoritas penduduknya menganut Islam Syiah. Studi ini merupakan kajian kepustakaan dan data yang diperoleh melalui telaah dokumen akan dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi. Studi ini diharapkan dapat memberikan gambaran tentang perkembangan studi tafsir di dunia Sunni dan Syiah di era kontemporer. Studi ini mengajukan temuan bahwa ulama kedua negara sama-sama mengembangkan kajian tafsir, dan telah menghasilkan sejumlah kitab tafsir. Karya tafsir di Iran bercorak Syiah, sedangkan kitab tafsir di Indonesia bercorak Sunni. Tetapi, dalam konteks kontemporer, ulama Iran telah menghasilkan banyak karya tafsir dimana para marja‘ taqlid memainkan peran penting dalam pengkajian tafsir, sedangkan ulama Indonesia saat ini kurang banyak menulis kitab tafsir.Abstract: Perkembangan Kontemporer Studi Tafsir Alquran di Indonesia dan Iran. This study examines the latest developments in Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia and Iran. These two countries differ in their forms of state and the affiliation of its people. Indonesia is not an Islamic State—albeit based on Pancasila that stresses monotheism—and the majority of its people adhere to Sunni Islam. Iran, on the other hand, is a declared Islamic Republic and the majority of its population adheres to Shiite Islam. This study is a literary review and the obtained data was analyzed using content analysis method. This study found that scholars in the two countries have developed interpretation studies, and have produced a number of Qur’anic exegesis. Naturally, Qur’anic exegesis works in Iran are Shiah in style, while those of Indonesia are Sunni in genres. Apparently, in contemporary context, Iranian scholars have been more productive than their Indonesian counterparts. Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji biografi dan gerakan Shaykh Ali Hasan Ahmad ad-Dary yang biasa disebut Tuan Hasan. Studi ini penting dilakukan mengingat studi yang dilakukan peneliti selama ini mencitrakan sosok ulama asal Mandailing ini sebagai sosok yang berjiwa terbelah akibat kajian mereka yang terlalu spesifik. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa Shaykh Ali Hasan merupakan ulama yang berafiliasi dengan organisasi Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) dan ahli dalam sejumlah bidang ilmu-ilmu keislaman. Sementara beberapa studi tentang Shaykh Ali Hasan lebih memfokuskan hanya pada gagasannya dalam bidang hadis dan tasawuf. Studi ini merupakan hasil dari sebuah penelitian kepustakaan dimana data diperoleh dari kegiatan telaah dokumen. Karya-karya Shaykh Ali Hasan dan hasil kajian para ahli tentang dirinya dijadikan sebagai referensi yang akan dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi. Kajian ini akan menunjukkan bahwa Shaykh Ali Hasan menampilkan sosok yang mumpuni dalam bidang ilmu-ilmu keislaman dan aktif dalam dunia pergerakan di Nusantara. Wajah ganda inilah yang membuat dirinya menjadi berbeda dengan sejumlah ulama yang kurang aktif dalam dunia pergerakan. Studi ini diharapkan dapat menjadi referensi utama dalam kajian Islam di Mandailing. Abstract: Ulama NU di Tanah Mandailing: Biografi Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad ad-Dary. This study examines the biography and movements of Shaykh Ali Hasan Ahmad ad-Dary, popularly known as Tuan Hasan. This study is important because the study conducted by researchers thus far has portrayed the figure of the ulama from Mandailing as a split-minded person because their studies are too specific. This study shows that Shaykh Ali Hasan is an ulama affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama organization and an expert in many fields of Islamic sciences. Up to the present time, studies of Shaykh Ali Hasan exclusively focuse on his ideas in the realm of hadith and sufism. This study is the result of a literature study where data is obtained from document review activities. Shaykh Ali Hasan’s works and a number of research findings and important studies are used as references to be analyzed by the content analysis method. This study shows that he presents a distinctive figure in the field of Islamic sciences and is active in the world of movement in the archipelago. It is this double faceted roles that makes him different from most scholars who are less active in the world of movement. Abstrak: Studi ini menganalisis falsafah pendidikan Pesantren Musthafawiyah. Pesantren ini telah menarik minat sejumlah peneliti, tetapi mereka belum mengungkap falsafah pendidikan yang dikembangkan dalam pesantren ini. Data kajian diperoleh dari kegiatan studi dokumen dan diperkuat dengan data yang diperoleh dari kegiatan observasi yang berkelanjutan, kemudian dianalisis dengan memanfaatkan model Miles dan Huberman. Studi ini mengajukan kesimpulan bahwa sebagaimana pesantren NU lain, Pesantren Musthafawiyah mengembangkan prinsip-prinsip al-muhâfazhah ‘ala qadîm al-shâlih wa al-akhzu bi al-jadîd al-ashlâh, tawâzun, ta‘âdul, dan tasâmuhdimana seluruh prinsip tersebut menjadi nilai-nilai dasar yang diterapkan dalam pembelajaran. Tentu saja, studi ini memperkuat kesimpulan sejumlah peneliti bahwa pesantren mengusung paham Islam moderat dan menolak radikalisme dalam beragama dan bernegara.
Abstract: Reaffirming Nusantara Islam: Nahdlatul Ulama and the Educational Philosophy of PesantrenMusthafawiyah. This study analyzes the educational philosophy of Pesantren Musthafawiyah, a theme that has not been properly studies by former researchers. This pesantren is affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama; as a matter of fact, its founder, Sheikh Mustafa Husein, is also the founder of NU in North Sumatra. This study data was obtained through document reviews and strengthened with prolonged observation activities, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman data analysis models. This study concludes that as with other NU pesantrens, Musthafawiyah develops the principles of al-muhâfazhah ‘ala qadîm al-shâlih wa al-akhzu bi al-jadîd al-ashlâh, tawâzun, ta‘âdul,and tasâmuh, the principles of which have become the basic values that are applied in teaching and learning process. Of course, this study reinforces the conclusions of a number of researchers that Islamic boarding schools uphold a moderate understanding of Islam and reject radicalism in religion and state.

Abstrak: Studi ini menganalisa respons organisasi Al-Ittihadiyah di Sumatera Utara terhadap radikalisme. Belakangan ini muncul pernyataan yang menimbulkan kontra produktif di mana organisasi Islam selain Nahdlatul Ulama diragukan perannya dalam membangun peradaban bangsa. Artikel ini menganalisis respons Al-Ittihadiyah terhadap radikalisme. Al-Ittihadiyah didirikan sebelum Indonesia merdeka dan para tokohnya ikut memperjuangkan dan mempertahankan kemerdekaan. Data studi ini diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam yang dilengkapi dengan kegiatan studi dokumen dan observasi; lalu dianalisis dengan menggunakan model analisis data Miles dan Huberman. Hasilnya adalah bahwa Al-Ittihadiyah merupakan organisasi Islam moderat sebagaimana dua organisasi Islam papan atas, NU dan Muhammadiyah. Organisasi ini, melalui lisan dan tulisan pengurusnya, menegaskan bahwa radikalisme bertentangan dengan semangat Islam. Mereka menolak banyak gagasan kelompok radikal seperti khilafah, anti-Barat, jihad berarti perang, dan legalisasi bom bunuh diri, sembari memberikan solusi bagi peredaman pertumbuhan dan perkembangan radikalisme di Indonesia. Abstract: Al-Ittihadiyah in North Sumatra and Its Responses to Radicalism. This study analyzes the response of the Al-Ittihadiyah in North Sumatra to radicalism. Lately there has been a counter-productive statement undermining the contribution of Islamic organizations other than Nahdlatul Ulama in building national civilization. Al-Ittihadiyah was established in Medan before Indonesia’s independence and its prominent leaders participated in gaining and maintaining independence. Information for this article has been gathered through combination of interviews, observations, and document reviews. Data analysis was based on the model developed by Miles and Huberman. It is concluded that Al-Ittihadiyah is a moderate Islamic organization, very much like the two top-flight Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah. This organization, through oral and written statement of the management, asserted that radicalism is against the spirit of Islam. They reject many of the ideas of radical groups such as the Caliphate, anti-West, jihâd means war, and the legalization of suicide bombings, while providing solutions to suppress the growth and development of radicalism in Indonesia. Belakangan ini muncul pernyataan yang menimbulkan kontra produktif di mana organisasi Islam selain Nahdlatul Ulama diragukan perannya dalam membangun peradaban bangsa. Artikel ini menganalisis respons Al-Ittihadiyah terhadap radikalisme. Al-Ittihadiyah didirikan sebelum Indonesia merdeka dan para tokohnya ikut memperjuangkan dan mempertahankan kemerdekaan. Data studi ini diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam yang dilengkapi dengan kegiatan studi dokumen dan observasi; lalu dianalisis dengan menggunakan model analisis data Miles dan Huberman. Hasilnya adalah bahwa Al-Ittihadiyah merupakan organisasi Islam moderat sebagaimana dua organisasi Islam papan atas, NU dan Muhammadiyah. Organisasi ini, melalui lisan dan tulisan pengurusnya, menegaskan bahwa radikalisme bertentangan dengan semangat Islam. Mereka menolak banyak gagasan kelompok radikal seperti khilafah, anti-Barat, jihad berarti perang, dan legalisasi bom bunuh diri, sembari memberikan solusi bagi peredaman pertumbuhan dan perkembangan radikalisme di Indonesia. Abstract: Al-Ittihadiyah in North Sumatra and Its Responses to Radicalism. This study analyzes the response of the Al-Ittihadiyah in North Sumatra to radicalism. Lately there has been a counter-productive statement undermining the contribution of Islamic organizations other than Nahdlatul Ulama in building national civilization. Al-Ittihadiyah was established in Medan before Indonesia’s independence and its prominent leaders participated in gaining and maintaining independence. Information for this article has been gathered through combination of interviews, observations, and document reviews. Data analysis was based on the model developed by Miles and Huberman. It is concluded that Al-Ittihadiyah is a moderate Islamic organization, very much like the two top-flight Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah. This organization, through oral and written statement of the management, asserted that radicalism is against the spirit of Islam. They reject many of the ideas of radical groups such as the Caliphate, anti-West, jihâd means war, and the legalization of suicide bombings, while providing solutions to suppress the growth and development of radicalism in Indonesia. Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji perkembangan ilmu falak di Nusantara. Perkembangan studi falak memang relatif tertinggal jauh dari perkembangannya di pusat-pusat peradaban Islam seperti Damaskus, Baghdad, Kairo dan Cordova. Ilmu falak baru berkembang di Kepulauan Nusantara sejak abad 19-20 M. Penulisan karya-karya ilmu falak oleh ulama Nusantara abad 19-20 pun lebih didasari oleh pemenuhan kebutuhan ibadah sehari-hari, khususnya salat dan puasa. Dalam konteks ini, penggambaran historiografi dan transmisi perkembangan ilmu falak dari Timur Tengah ke Nusantara masih terhitung sebagai kajian terlantar. Karena itu, diperlukan kajian komprehensif tentang perkembangan studi ilmu falak di Indonesia. Sebagai studi awal, artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan pendekatan sejarah dimana datanya didasarkan pada telaah dokumen. Kajian ini mengemukakan bahwa ilmu falak mulai berkembang di Nusantara mulai abad ke-19, dimana para ulama Nusantara mendalami ilmu tersebut dari Timur Tengah dengan ragam motivasi, dan kemudian mereka mengembangkannya di tanah kelahiran dan mewariskan sejumlah karya dalam bidang ini.Abstract: Historiography of the Science of Astronomy in Indonesian Archipelago: History, Motivation and Early Figures. The historiography of astronomy in Indonesia and its transmission from the Middle East present an interesting field of research that has not been. The present article is a result of a preliminary library research focusing on history, motivation, and the early scholars of the field. Apparently, local scholars studied astronomy in different seats of knowledge in the Middle East and then brought it home. Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji gagasan pendidikan Al Ittihadiyah meliputi bidang pendidikan dan metode pendidikan. Studi ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kelangkaan referensi tentang organisasi asal Sumatera Timur ini, terutama gerakan dan gagasan Al Ittihadiyah dalam bidang pendidikan. Studi ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari kegiatan studi dokumen yang dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi dan diperkaya dengan menggunakan teknik wawancara. Kajian ini mengajukan temuan bahwa Al Ittihadiyah berkontribusi bagi pengembangan pendidikan Islam di Sumatera Timur, dimulai dari era Kolonial sampai pasca kemerdekaan. Sebagaimana organisasi Islam pembaharu lain, Al Ittihadiyah sebelum masa kemerdekaan telah melakukan pembaruan kurikulum dan metode pendidikan, sehingga organisasi ini berperan dalam memperbaiki kualitas pendidikan kaum Muslim di Nusantara. Tetapi belakangan ini, terlihat organisasi ini relatif kurang memainkan peran dalam pengembangan pendidikan Islam mengingat lembaga-lembaga pendidikan tidak lagi dikelola oleh organisasi secara sentralistis.Abstract: Al Ittihadiyah Education Modernisation Movement in East Sumatra, 1935-1975. This study examines the ideas of Al Ittihadiyah’s education in the fields of education and education methods. This study was motivated by the scarcity of references about organizations from East Sumatra, especially Al Ittihadiyah’s movements and ideas in the field of education. This study is the result of qualitative research. Data obtained from document study activities which was then analyzed by the method of content analysis and enriched using interview techniques. This study proposes findings that Al Ittihadiyah contributed to the development of Islamic education in East Sumatra, starting from the Colonial era to post-independence. As with other reforming Islamic organizations, Al Ittihadiyah prior to independence had carried out reforms in curriculum and educational methods, so that this organization played a role in improving the quality of education of Muslims in the archipelago. Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji pemikiran Sayyid Usman tentang etika pendidikan dalam perspektif Islam. Studi ini perlu dilakukan mengingat belum banyak studi tentang tokoh lokal dari Nusantara yang berkontribusi dalam bidang pendidikan Islam. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan yang mengandalkan metode analisis isi, dan mengajukan temuan bahwa Sayyid Usman menulis sebuah karya dalam bidang etika yang berjudul Âdâb al-Insân. Kitab ini relatif kurang diteliti dalam sudut pandang pendidikan Islam. Berdasarkan telaah terhadap naskah Nusantara ini, penulisnya menegaskan bahwa pendidikan merupakan solusi utama dalam rangka memperbaiki adab orang-orang jahat dengan mengajarkan serangkaian adab yang melingkupi aspek kepribadian, sosial dan profesionalitas. Studi ini berkontribusi dalam penguatan gugusan literatur dalam bidang pendidikan Islam mengingat tidak banyak tokoh Nusantara yang dikenalkan dan dikaji di perguruan tinggi Islam.Abstract: Paedagogical Narrative from Betawi Land: Sayyid Usman’s Thoughts on Educational Ethics. This study examines Sayyid Usman’s thinking concerning the ethics of education in an Islamic perspective. This study is necessary considering the scarcity of research on local scholars who have contributed to the field of Islamic education. This article is the result of library research that relies on the method of content analysis, and proposes findings that Sayyid Usman wrote a work in the field of ethics, entitled Âdâb al-Insân. This book is relatively under-researched in the perspective of Islamic education. Based on a review of this archipelago script, the author emphasizes that education is the main solution in improving the ethics of bad people by teaching a series of âdâb which covers aspects of personality, social and professionalism. This study contributes to the strengthening of the literature in the field of Islamic education considering that there are not many Nusantara figures introduced and studied in Islamic Higher Education institutions.Kata Kunci: pendidikan, etika, Nusantara, Betawi, Sayyid Usman

Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas polemik antara Sayyid Usman Betawi dan Syekh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau tentang pelaksanaan salat Jumat di dua masjid di Palembang. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan memanfaatkan metode analisis isi. Kajian ini dimulai dari pengungkapan biografi kedua ulama dan polemik kedua ulama dalam bidang fikih, khususnya tentang salat Jumat. Perdebatan ini memang menyita perhatian Sayyid Usman yang menulis sepuluh karya tentang objek yang diperdebatkan. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi kritik tidak saja berlaku pada ulama di era klasik, tetapi juga ulama Nusantara di era Kolonial. Perdebatan di antara dua ulama dalam satu persoalan terjadi pada satu masa tetapi berbeda tempat. Studi ini berkontribusi bagi pengkajian hukum Islam di era kolonial Belanda, sekaligus telah membuktikan bahwa ulama-ulama Nusantara berkontribusi dalam pengkajian hukum Islam di Nusantara.Abstract: Polemic of Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about Friday Prayer. This study discusses the polemic between Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about carrying out Friday prayers in two mosques in Palembang. This article is the result of library research using the content analysis method. This study begins with the disclosure of the biographies of the two ulemas and polemics of the two scholars in the field of jurisprudence, especially regarding Friday prayers. This debate indeed caught the attention of Sayyid Usman, who wrote ten works on the debated objects. This study shows that the tradition of criticism not only applies to the ulama in the classical era, but also the scholars of the Archipelago in the Colonial era. The debate between the two scholars in one problem occurred at one time but at a different place. This study contributes to the study of Islamic law in the Dutch colonial era, while also proving that the archipelago’s scholars contributed to the study of Islamic law in the archipelago region.Kata Kunci: fikih, ulama, naskah, Haramain, Nusantara

Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan memanfaatkan metode analisis isi. Kajian ini dimulai dari pengungkapan biografi kedua ulama dan polemik kedua ulama dalam bidang fikih, khususnya tentang salat Jumat. Perdebatan ini memang menyita perhatian Sayyid Usman yang menulis sepuluh karya tentang objek yang diperdebatkan. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi kritik tidak saja berlaku pada ulama di era klasik, tetapi juga ulama Nusantara di era Kolonial. Perdebatan di antara dua ulama dalam satu persoalan terjadi pada satu masa tetapi berbeda tempat. Studi ini berkontribusi bagi pengkajian hukum Islam di era kolonial Belanda, sekaligus telah membuktikan bahwa ulama-ulama Nusantara berkontribusi dalam pengkajian hukum Islam di Nusantara.Abstract: Polemic of Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about Friday Prayer. This study discusses the polemic between Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about carrying out Friday prayers in two mosques in Palembang. This article is the result of library research using the content analysis method. This study begins with the disclosure of the biographies of the two ulemas and polemics of the two scholars in the field of jurisprudence, especially regarding Friday prayers. This debate indeed caught the attention of Sayyid Usman, who wrote ten works on the debated objects. This study shows that the tradition of criticism not only applies to the ulama in the classical era, but also the scholars of the Archipelago in the Colonial era. The debate between the two scholars in one problem occurred at one time but at a different place. Abstrak: Pada Maret 2017, pemerintah Indonesia menetapkan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam Indonesia, yang ditandai dengan pembangunan sebuah monumen sederhana yang diresmikan langsung oleh Presiden RI. Para sejarawan Muslim memberikan respons terhadap kebijakan tersebut, ada yang mendukung dan ada yang tidak. Penulis merasa penting untuk sekali lagi menekankan bahwa Peureulak di pantai timur Sumatra adalah kerajaan Islam tertua di Indonesia bahkan Asia Tenggara. Sesungguhnya ini sudah merupakan kesimpulan dari sejumlah kajian para sejarawan. Sebab itu, dari perspektif akademik, penetapan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam masih perlu dikaji dan ditinjau kembali. Sebab meskipun Barus menjadi lokasi pertama yang menerima Islam pertama sekali, tetapi masyarakat Muslim di sana tidak membentuk kekuatan politik, melainkan Peureulak lah yang sukses mencapai kekuatan politik Islam pertama di Nusantara.Abstract: Peureulak Sultanate and the Discourse on ‘Zero Point of Nusantara’s Islamic Civilization’. In March 2017, Indonesian Government officially recognized Barus, a historical small city at the western coast of Sumatra, as the zero point of Indonesian Islamic Civilization. This recognition was marked by a relatively modest monument, inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Muslim historians responded differently: some agree and others disagree. The present author finds it very important to underline once again that Peureulak Sultanate at the eastern coast of Aceh was the first sizeable Islamic Kingdom of not just the Indonesia archipelago but also of the whole Southeast Asian archipelago. As a matter of fact, this has been the conclusion of several historical studies. Therefore, from scholarly point of view, the placement of this important monument at Barus needs to be studied and revisited. While Barus was indeed the first point of the arrival of Islam, the Muslim community there did not form any sizeable socio-political force. Abstrak: Penelitian ini mengkaji biografi dan kiprah intelektual Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan di Sumatera Timur. Keberlangsungan tradisi intelektual di Sumatera Timur dipengaruhi, salah satunya, oleh kemunculan ulama-ulama di kawasan ini. Sebagian mereka berasal dari etnis Melayu, dan tidak sedikit dari mereka merupakan ulama yang berasal dari etnis Mandailing yang merantau dari kawasan Tapanuli ke Sumatera Timur. Studi ini mengkaji bagaimana peran Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan yang berasal dari etnis Mandailing dalam mengembangkan tradisi intelektual Islam di Sumatera Timur. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologis-historis, studi ini mengajukan temuan bahwa Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan memberikan kontribusi bagi penguatan tradisi intelektual Islam di Sumatera Timur. Ia tidak saja menghasilkan karya akademik dalam berbagai bidang keislaman, tetapi juga mampu melahirkan ulama berbakat selain turut memperjuangkan dan mempertahankan kemerdekaan di tanah kelahirannya. Abstract: Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan, 1901-1969: The Roots of Intellectual Tradition of East Sumatra in Early 20th Centuries. This study examines the biography and intellectual work of Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan in East Sumatra. The continuation of intellectual traditions in East Sumatra is influenced, among others, by the emergence of scholars in the region. Some of these scholars were local Malays; but a few of them were from Mandailing ethnic who had migrated from South Tapanuli. This study examines the role of Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan, a migrating scholar from Mandailing, in developing Islamic intellectual traditions in East Sumatra. Using a sociological-historical approach, this study proposes the findings that Syekh Abdul Halim Hasan had indeed contributed significantly in strengthening Islamic intellectual traditions of the region. He authored academic works in various fields of Islam, trained younger talented scholars, and also involved in independence struggle in his homeland.
