From the very beginning of Literature, there’s a deep link between human beings and imaginary androids. The presence of this ancient topic in nowadays literature should by no means be regarded as extraordinary, insofar those machines in current times are involved in worldwide scientific and philosophical discussions about the ethical limits of Artificial Intelligence and the trueness and scales of their cognition and awareness. The main idea of this paper is that there are good grounds to suppose that our perceiving and reasoning skills are indeed reproductible and developable by machines, not only in the view of neuroscientific theories that maintain expanded or distributed cognition, but also in the imagination of some Latin-American writers, such as Mario Levrero (La maquina de pensar en Gladys), Cesar Aira (in many books, especially in El pequeno monje budista) and Ricardo Piglia (La ciudad ausente). Those authors seem to explore the possibility of a fictious exoconsciousness.

This contribution is aimed at analyzing how empathy is instantiated when we read works of fiction and at studying which elements can improve the consonance between characters and readers. Starting from a brief summary about empathy with regard to literary texts, the paper examines the question concerning human reception of fictional characters in order to investigate how we empathize with them through the description of some elements which foster empathy: internal focalization, interior monologue and movement description. Fraulein Else by Arthur Schnitzler will serve as case study of empathic reading.

This article explores the cultural consumption of adult comics by Mexican children, focusing on comics that considered the figure of child kidnappers (robachicos) in the context of the mid-twentieth century. In a time, when mass culture offered a wide range of cultural productions, children were active consumers of high dose violence stories, that had children as protagonists. The comics studied here show the tension between the world of adults and children. In particular, the comics exposed an adult world related to children through physical and symbolic violence where children were abused, not heard and silenced by the injustices and the dangers of urban life. Finally, I analysehow emotions related to fear were commercially exploited in these comics and how the autonomous use of the city by children became, during the forties and the fifties, a risky activity for them.

Along four decades, students and teachers of Polytechnic of Minors in San Bernardo, Chile, lived a peculiar experience of reeducation, under a system of internship, which was sustained by the system of protection of minors created in 1928. In this article we review the principles that were proposed to apply and the experience that was built there, including successive crises and restructuring processes. The intervention of differentactors revealed the relations of cooperation and conflict that took place inside, as well as a strong identity that emerged among the inmates.
