The article deals with language representation of the Soviet Union and Western countries intercultural relations in fine arts, reflected in modern Anglophone art discourse. The investigation focuses on the peculiarities used to convey in art critical discourse socio-political concepts, representing cognitive contexts, specific patterns of socio-cultural knowledge, as well as linguistic representation of “Self vs Other” opposition, embedded in cultural interaction in art. A comprehensive lexical, semantic, contextual, linguistic, and cognitive analysis of international art criticism made it possible to reveal that the Cold War and cultural integration are the two overarching cognitive contexts that shape the comprehension and evaluative interpretation of intercultural relations between the Soviet Union and Western countries of the 1950s-1960s. These cognitive contexts underlie the choice of language means used by an art expert to characterize intercultural relations in fine arts. The analysis demonstrates that in Anglophone art criticism these contexts provide an eventive framework. The binary “Self vs Other” opposition can be conveyed in an art history text at different levels, showing its dynamics and in some cases involving a stepwise “Other” to “Self” transformation.

The article presents an attempt to view the phenomenon of conceptual metaphor in the cognitive-semiotic aspect. The object of the study is the conceptual metaphor, the subject matter is its cognitive-semantic essence and the forms of its representation. The main thesis that forms the theoretical basis of the article is that the conceptual metaphor understood as the ability of our consciousness to think of one, more abstract entity in terms of another, more concrete, entity, presents a mental phenomenon that may have not only verbal, but other forms of its representation. The main objective of the article is to carry out the analysis of visual, artefact and ontological metaphors in the cognitive-semiotic aspect and the ways of their representation in the text. The main methods of analysis conditioned by the theoretical aspect chosen for analysis are introspection, or metacognition aimed at reconstructing the work of consciousness in the process of metaphorical thinking, and the inferential method aimed at reconstructing implicit metaphorical meanings. The analysis of visual (artistic), artifact and ontological metaphors reveals that they are characterized by the same qualities as verbal metaphors: dynamism, contextual variability and existence of two their varieties: trite metaphors which reflect ordinary thinking and original ones which are the product of artistic thinking. When ontological and artefact metaphors are presented in the text, their metaphorical meanings can be presented both explicitly and implicitly and, in the latter case, their metaphorical meanings must be inferred by the reader or the linguist. The participation of nonverbal codes in the expression of metaphorical meanings does not diminish the significance of the verbal code which is another proof of the leading role of language in conceptualization and interpretation of the world. The analysis undertaken enables to confirm the main thesis as well as to reveal the explanatory potential of the cognitive-semiotic approach to the study of metaphor and, most probably, other language phenomena.

The article analyses the role of chronotope in implementing genre characteristics of different types of novels within the frame of one novel in a cognitive approach perspective. The authors proceed from the theoretical assumption that the content of any novel represents a multidimensional knowledge of the matrix format comprising various types of conceptual domains as specific cognitive contexts. These contexts refer to the knowledge not only about the plot and the composition of the novel, but also about its genre characteristics and their individual interpretation by the author of the novel. Accordingly, they choose cognitive matrix analysis as the methodological basis of the research. Particular attention is focused on the analysis of general principles and mechanisms of the author's individual interpretation and implementation of the concept of chronotope, suggested by M.M. Bakhtin, within the framework of a specific novel. In relation to the novel under discussion the authors of the article model chronotope in the form of the cognitive matrix SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM and analyze its conceptual structure as it is seen by the author of the novel, as well as his choice of means of its representation in language. The results of the cognitive matrix and linguistic analysis lead to the conclusion that typical genre features of the novel are implemented through characteristics of the basic concepts of the respective conceptual domains and means of their linguistic representation. The article also argues close relationship between all of these characteristics and the dominant role of some of them in relation to the others.

In the paper the author explores possibilities of how basic concepts of German culture can influence the speech activity of the speaker. The research is done on the crossing point of grammar, theory of communication and linguistic conceptology. The paper deals with German modal verbs functioning in modern fiction texts. The author discusses the problem of modality choice by the speaking personality producing the utterance. The research aims at revealing correspondences between the grammar system of German modal verbs in their functioning and German speaking personality who encodes his/her choice influenced by basic concepts of German low context culture, namely INDIVIDUALISM, ORDER and RESPONSIBILITY. The correlation takes into account the transparency of strong German modal verb system and direct communication style of German speaking personality who chooses in this case an overt modal strategy. The other strategy type is the softening one. The personality mitigates his/her utterance taking into consideration the personality of the partner. Overt strategy is used for encoding deontic modality and softening strategy denotes epistemic modality and some others cases. The findings open access for understanding German linguistic identity.

The paper explores cognitive mechanics of «doing» gender in literary translation and aims at providing a cognitive account of gender as both a function of the translator’s self and the translator’s practical concern, i.e. a meaning-making feature of the literary structure which is to be somehow relayed in the translator’s text. Having initially defined the notions «cognitive dominant» and «perspective», constitutive of the research framework, the author reflects on the instrumental role of gender, integrating biological, cognitive, sociocultural and discourse dimensions of the translator’s activity, as a meta-dominant of the translator’s cognition and discourse, which shapes 1) the translator’s phenomenological perspective, from which the text world is mentally construed and 2) strategic (re)framing of the narrative perspective in the translator’s text. A number of English-Russian translations are discussed to illustrate inherent dynamicity, fluidity, multiplicity, performativity and pervasiveness of gender as a dominant driving translation. Certain cognitive and aesthetic modes of doing and (re)framing gender in translation are distinguished as well. Overall, the research findings evince the urgent need for the translators to adopt and implement a gender-sensitive translation strategy, which is likely to considerably enhance the literary value of their translations.

The article deals with such topical problem as the transfer of scientific knowledge to the aesthetic sphere. The novelty and relevance of the article is due to the fact that it contains a poetic analysis of the novel “Flowers for Algernon” by a modern American writer D. Keyes in the perspective of the cording factor as a principle for organizing an artistic text. The authors turn to the timely task of researching D. Keyes’s work with a view to the broader understanding some sing and semiosis problems of non-classical literary text. As a result of the meticulous analysis, the authors show a new poetic significance of the writer’s cognitive interpreting modern reality which became an essential element of organizing the text of the novel “Flowers for Algernon”. The principles of incorporating psychological knowledge into the construal of text meaning were determined. The accumulated evidence allow to justify the inclusion of the novel in the general art process of developing adequate poetic tools aimed at reflecting the changed ideas about the modern world.

The article touches the problem of knowledge interaction in humanitarian discourse. Noting the increase of humanitarian knowledge role at the present stage of science development, the author of the article considers the concepts “interaction”, “discourse”, “interdiscursivity” and analyzes the interdiscourse phenomenon is as having cognitive-communicative nature. The research presents the analysis of historical and philosophical texts fragments confirming various fields of science knowledge interaction and identification of episodes of different sciences knowledge attracted in the process of generating knowledge of a particular science. The category «irterdiscursiveness» is acknowledged as the category of knowledge interaction manifestation on the discoursive level; the category “irtertextuality” reveals knowledge interaction on the textual level. It is concluded that the other areas knowledge involvement serves to implement the author's pragmatic attitudes and contributes to the creation of comprehensive knowledge. This interdisciplinary approach would give great opportunities for a deeper and expanded study of the humanities. The discussed phenomenon is widely observed nowadays, activating the multilateral relations of different areas of knowledge.

The article discusses the issues of generating, understanding and recognizing an individual author’s metaphor within the framework of artistic discourse. The subjectivity of metaphorical modeling the world is understood as an individual and selective understanding of it which determines the peculiarities of its perception. The issues of the connection of the process of metaphorical modeling with intuition and cognition are considered. The author makesan assumption about four possible variants of the process of generating metaphors. It is emphasized that in the process of metaphorical interpretation of the world, the personal-physiological context, the historical, socio-cultural context of the author, the situational context, as well as the context of discourse become dominant. It is noted that for successful identification and understanding of a metaphor, it is necessary, among otherthings, to havecommon knowledge about the world in the form of cognitive images of consciousness and the author’s contexts listed above, which prevail in the process of his individual creativity when generating a metaphor. The possibilities and problems of automatic recognition and identification of metaphors are considered.

The article considers event reportage as one of the journalistic genres, which is the most important component of the mass communication discourse. The authors focus on the features of the communicative strategies of modern event reportage. The proposed comparative analysis is carried out by considering English and Russian reports. Two main communicative strategies of modern event reportages are identified as objective transmission of the news and the impact on the recipient with the help of the author's commentary on the described event. The communicative strategies of English event reportage have a deliberately emphasized focus on objective coverage of events and maximum restraint of the assessments included in it, while the communicative strategies of Russian reportage are aimed not only at covering the event, but also to a greater extent at its emotional and evaluative perception. The research of communicative strategies and their speech specifics of modern event reportage created in different languages shows the national linguistic and extra linguistic features of this popular journalistic genre.

This article is devoted to studying the peculiarities of perceiving the phenomenon of mass lockdown represented in static polycode texts (Internet memes and demotivators). The author of the article defines the main subject areas of these texts basing his conclusions on the content and discourse analysis, considers and characterizes relevant topics and subtopics within the framework. As the research has revealed, Internet memes and demotivators devoted to lockdown are characterized by a wide range of topics. However, they are generally related to people’s usual way of life and daily routine that changed with the introduction of restrictions or during the lockdown. Eight main subject areas are defined, including “Health preservation during lockdown”, “Duration of lockdown”, “Staying at home”, “Being outside home”, “Compliance with the lockdown restrictions”, “Provision with the necessary goods and products”, “Financial well-being”, “Psychological condition”. Some of the issues and opinions associated with them appear to be interconnected. The author of the article defines the main subject areas of these texts basing his conclusions on the content and discourse analysis, considers and characterizes relevant topics and subtopics within the framework. As the research has revealed, Internet memes and demotivators devoted to lockdown are characterized by a wide range of topics. However, they are generally related to people’s usual way of life and daily routine that changed with the introduction of restrictions or during the lockdown. Eight main subject areas are defined, including “Health preservation during lockdown”, “Duration of lockdown”, “Staying at home”, “Being outside home”, “Compliance with the lockdown restrictions”, “Provision with the necessary goods and products”, “Financial well-being”, “Psychological condition”. Some of the issues and opinions associated with them appear to be interconnected. The degree of topicality and representativeness of the selected subject areas and topics are determined in accordance with the number of texts related to them.","PeriodicalId":53482,"journal":{"name":"Voprosy Kognitivnoy Lingvistiki","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67634985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
