Since cultural competence is inherent to language acquisition, it should take a central role in heritage language courses so that heritage language learners (HLLs) can make connections with their own culture and be aware of the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. This article presents an overview of the instruction and assessment of culture to promote critical thinking and reflection in order to reduce stereotypes and to validate the cultural heritage of HLLs. The current role of study abroad and service-learning to teach culture in the Spanish heritage language classroom is also discussed.

This article examines the sociolinguistic interview as a technique for collecting personal experience narratives for sociolinguistic analysis. My aim is to try to answer the main critiques that this data collection technique has received and to present concrete cases that corroborate its importance. The data provided allows to prove that the findings concerning these narratives do not depend on the scenario in which they are generated. This is why Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) and Labov’s (1972) narrative structure is generally used for the construction of any personal experience narrative.

This article shows that, despite appearances, the structures associated to No vi a Juan sino a Maria (I didn't see Juan, but Maria) and Vi no a Juan sino a Maria (I saw not Juan but Maria) are different. While it is possible to accept a standard analysis in the first case, the second structure displays properties which are surprising if one assumes that a Juan ‘to Juan’ is an argument of the predicate. This work argues that in the second structure the negated element and the corrective coda form one single constituent where sino acts as a relational head.
这篇文章表明,尽管外表如此,与No vi a Juan sino a Maria(我没有看到Juan,但看到Maria)和vi No a Juan sino a Maria(我看到的不是Juan,而是Maria)相关的结构是不同的。

This article aims to contribute to the history of Central American Spanish by studying the lexicon included in Memoria del estado politico y eclesiastico de la Capitania General de Guatemala, published by the Salvadorean priest Jose Mariano Mendez in 1821. I will first provide a general overview of the lexicon, highlighting the presence of vocabulary related to administrative issues and the learned discourse of the nineteenth century. Then, I will analyze different words that can be considered Central Americanisms, in order to call attention to the process of dialectalization already taking place at that time.

This article analyzes the structures of single-parent families headed by women by focusing on the discourse of the media in Spain over the last thirty years. This goal will be reached through a corpus-based study that will provide data, from the quantitative and qualitative point of view, on the selected lexical items. This study will enable us to examine to what extent the Spanish press contributes to stereotype this kind of family model. Amongst our conclusions are: (1) in the last analyzed biennium, a greater visibility and less social concealment of the phenomenon has been revealed; (2) over time there was some change in the kind of issues related to this family model; and (3) certain lexical items have been traditionally associated with social exclusion and poverty, whereas other lexical items have been associated with women’s empowerment.

This article examines the “hyperverse”, as I will call the metric unit longer than the typical free verse line. The free verse innovates the modernist silva by introducing the versiculo, a compound line whose members share the general hendecasyllabic rhythm. The prosification of Juan Ramon Jimenez’s last poems meant a radical evolution of the free verse, but this move remained marginal. However, the hyperverse of the “novisimos” arises in the sixties as a link between the original free verse and its prosified variety. Besides, the hyperverse is a characterizing feature of the poetry of the “novisimos” which relates their generation to the vanguard.

This article identifies the syntactic and lexical structures most commonly used by sports journalists to designate the referents of football events in a corpus of ten articles from the French sports newspaper L’Equipe. This allows us to contribute to the linguistic characterization of sports discourse in French, especially football newspaper articles. In order to analyze the corpus, we will first identify the terms and syntactic structures used in articles from L’Equipe that refer to the most prototypical elements of the football event, i.e., teams, players, coaches, moves, and other elements. Secondly, we will determine how regularly journalists mention each one of these referents in terms of types and tokens. Finally, we will examine the syntactic configuration of the structures.

This article lays the foundation for a long-term research which postulates the following hypothesis: the subject who dwells in the poems by the Peruvian poet Jose Watanabe is one that manufactures knowledge through elements found outside of the writing framework, i.e., pieces of advice and the family or community short stories, that which inhabits in, and arises from—to put it in one of his verses—“the deep mouth of the eldest”. This article also addresses Watanabe’s way of understanding the world, especially the world opened through his word, which involves a dimension of experience that constantly stands in opposition to certain types of knowledge, for example, physics, mathematics, linguistics, or medicine. The subject who dwells in Watanabe’s poems is at the antipodes of this kind of knowledge. The wisdom transmitted through his poetry depends on both the personal experience of the subject and that which comes out from “the deep mouth of the eldest”.
