SummaryThe postharvest quality of nine early-, mid-, and late-season cultivars of California nectarines was determined following forced-air heat treatment used for quarantine disinfestation of Mediterranean fruit fly. The treatment consisted of heating the nectarines to a seed surface temperature of 47.28C for 2 min over a period of 4.h. Nectarines were evaluated after storage at 08C for 14.d and 208C for 4.d, which simulated shipping and sale of the fruit. Surface appearance, indexed by colour measurements and visual ratings, was generally unchanged by heat treatment and would have had no influence on the marketability of the fruit. A detectable change in the chroma of the internal flesh was shown in a number of cultivars, but was imperceptible when rated by visual evaluation. Heat treated fruit were firmer than unheated fruit, but retained the ability to soften. SummaryDifferent concentrations of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and gibberellic acid (GA3) and their combinations, applied at two stages of fruit growth, were evaluated for prolonging the marketing season of `Feicheng' peaches. GA3 applied at the end of pit hardening, or AVG applied two weeks before commercial harvest, inhibited fruit maturation on the tree, delayed harvest and reduced flesh browning after cold storage in a concentration-dependent manner. A synergistic effect was found when both GA3 and AVG were used, with the combination of 100 or 150.mg l±1 GA3, applied at the end of pit hardening, and 100 mg l±1 AVG, applied two weeks before harvest giving the best results. These combinations retarded the change in ground colour, loss of firmness, and reduction in acidity by 2±3 weeks. Since harvest was prolonged by 2±3 weeks, soluble solids content (SSC) in fruit increased compared with the control (harvested earlier). SummaryClonal mother plants of Eucalyptus globulus were grown in 10 l pots in a Portuguese nursery and lightly harvested for stem cuttings every 2±4 weeks. Shoot length, within a crown size and across crown sizes, was poorly related to the rooting ability of derivative cuttings. The chronological age of mother plants, at least up to two years, also had little effect on the propagation traits of cuttings, and variation between individual mother plants was generally non-significant. Rooting of cuttings was strongly related to pre-harvest shoot extension rates (cm per shoot per week), the cuttings productivity of mother plants in the previous interval (cuttings per plant per week), and to the reciprocal of a shoot dominance index at harvest (principal shoot length/number of cuttings harvested). These variables were easy to measure and accounted for nearly all of the variation in rooting ability between harvests of cuttings within the clone.

SummaryIn addition to supplying valuable cultivars for ornamental uses, dwarf mutant tree forms may present opportunities for studying the genetic control of physiological factors affecting shoot growth. Few studies have addressed the histogenetic role of GA during shoot development, and its effect on cell pattern in mature internodes. Hence, the growth responses of two genetic dwarf sweetgum trees (Liquidambar styraiflua L. cv. Gumball and an unnamed wild dwarf tree) were examined following foliar application of gibberellic acid (GA) to young preformed leaves. Both were GA-responsive mutants and exhibited marked increases in shoot growth following treatment. GA was effective in 1) stimulating subapical meristem activity in preformed internodes which were initiated the previous season, 2) inducing cell divisions in the apical meristem proper to promote the neoformation of leaves and sylleptic lateral branches, and 3) stimulating subapical mitotic activity in neoformed internodes. Influence of leaf blight on yields in geranium Pelargonium graveolens 叶枯病对天竺葵产量的影响

SummaryExperiments were conducted during 1993 and 1994 at Bangalore, India, to estimate the reductions in yield of essential oil caused by leaf blight (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc.) on three geranium (Pelargonium graveolens (L.) Herit) clones. Leaf blight resulted in smaller reductions in oil yield in an Algerian-type (Kd) clone than a Reunion-type (Lo) and an Egyptian-type (Eg) clone. The results indicate that even expensive disease management practices can be recommended for management of leaf blight on the Lo and Eg clones in regions where leaf blight is prevalent, because increases in severity of leaf blight may cause considerable economic loss. Such measures, however, may not be economically viable for the Kd clone.

SummaryThe cold units (CU) and heat units (HU) required for the flowering of 13 apricot cultivars (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivated in AbaraÂn (Murcia) have been established. The end of the dormancy period was determined on the basis of the dry-weight increase of the flower buds. The tests in which the dry weight was measured after forcing the flower buds at 208C turned out to be more precise in detecting the beginning of the reactivation phase than those in which they were not forced.

SummarySeasonal changes in the concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the endosperm and integument of the ovule of Ginkgo biloba L. were analysed by GC-MS using [d5]-IAA and [d6]-ABA as internal standards. The concentration of IAA in the endosperm increased rapidly during the period of rapid growth, and was closely correlated with the growth rate of the ovule. The concentration of IAA in the integument was much lower than that in the endosperm, but also changed similarly. The concentration of ABA in the endosperm showed a peak after the cessation of rapid growth, and decreased during the fertilization period. The concentration of ABA in the integument also increased after the cessation of rapid growth, though slowly.

SummaryThe rates at which flowers reach anthesis on four genetically distinct clones of brown boronia grown at different sites in Tasmania were examined. The yield of flower material per plant and the concentration of extract, total volatiles and b-ionone (% dry weight) were assessed throughout the flowering period via small- and pilot-scale extractions. Organoleptic assessment of absolutes was done. The four clones had similar concentrations of extract when harvested at between 50 and 80% open flowers (1.5–2.0% d.w.). The concentrations of total volatiles and b-ionone were reduced in pilot scale extractions compared with small-scale extractions. Inter- and intra-sample variability was high; there were no significant trends in the concentration of total volatiles or b-ionone in any clone.
