Abstract Millions of babies die of stillbirth every year around the world, yet there is a dearth of research on the helping behaviours of counsellors working with grieving families. Mindfulness-based interventions have been increasingly used, and researched, in vulnerable populations. While many studies have empirically focused on mindfulness as an intervention, very few studies have examined trait mindfulness in providers and its relationship to perceptions of helping. This study is an open-ended inquiry to explore trait, or dispositional, mindfulness in counsellors/therapists as perceived by bereaved parents in the aftermath of perinatal death. Descriptive data are reported, and a thematic analysis that identified and coded recurring and unifying statements was performed on the qualitative response (n = 94). Findings suggest that trait mindfulness in counsellors/therapists is perceived as helpful and inverse findings were also discovered.

Abstract Bereavement research is reaching the hundred-year landmark of the publication of Freud’s classic 1917 ‘Mourning and Melancholia’, an essay of great significance for subsequent theoretical developments, particularly — in the current context — with regard to the centrality placed on ‘grief work’ in coming to terms with bereavement. Where do we stand now, a century on, in our understanding of the nature of adaptive coping? In this article, after providing a summary of theoretical approaches across the decades of the twentieth century, we illustrate an important direction in contemporary research on coping, tracing this from the grief work notion to what has evolved into fine-grained examinations of confrontational-avoidant processing. A main thrust of recent investigation has been (1) to postulate and (2) to evaluate the efficacy of underlying mechanisms in relation to (mal)adaptive coping with bereavement: there has been systematic examination of regulatory cognitive-emotional processes in both clinical trials and more theoretically-focused studies. Evidence has become more conclusive; both types of investigation have benefitted from employment of newly available designs and techniques, and novel statistical methods. However, further establishment of the role of coping processes in (mal)adaptation is needed. We suggest directions for future research in this domain.

Abstract This study presents the values of valence, arousal, subjective frequency of use and degree of relationship with death of 125 words of an affective nature, assessed by university students and including words related to death (N = 65). The values of these words were found to be different to words of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral natures.

Abstract The grieving process in people with intellectual disabilities has been one of the least-discussed topics in the scientific literature on grief, despite the important implications involved. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the subject. A total of seven research papers exploring different evaluation tools were identified.

Abstract The grieving process following the death of a loved one is a period of great emotional stress where psychological intervention is a fundamental pillar. This article defines adaptive grief and outlines the principal current debates in regard to the diagnosis of complicated grief, the use of appropriate evaluation tools, and different therapeutic approaches. In addition, the article explores the peculiarities of certain disenfranchised griefs, in particular those presented by parents of children with chronic diseases such as cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorders.

Abstract Divorce, like other life transitions, results in a grieving process. This paper analyses the grieving process experienced with divorce in a sample of 185 Spanish divorced parents as well as the antecedents and consequences of this situation. No differences were found by gender or custody status. Grief due to divorce is affected by the divorcee’s sociocultural context, duration of the marriage, time elapsed since the divorce and attachment style. Grief due to divorce predicts the person’s adaptation to the divorce, reaction to conflict, forgiveness and subjective well-being (life satisfaction, positive and negative affect), but it does not predict co-parenting or perception of support received from the former spouse. The implication of these results for intervention and working with divorced parents is discussed.

Abstract This article outlines the linguistic validation of the Good Death Inventory (GDI) translation into Spanish, used to assess the quality of care at the end of a patient’s life. A standardized procedure was followed to do this that included a blind back translation process and an exploration of the conceptual adaptation of the scale into Spanish through six cognitive interviews with relatives of deceased patients. The translation of the scale (54 items) showed indicators of low difficulty. Six items required syntactic changes, 12 required semantic changes and only one item required syntactic and semantic changes. All items were considered applicable to the Spanish context. The degree of difficulty was higher for the back translation than for the translation itself. The cognitive interviews highlighted the difficulty of choosing between seven answers, especially those that were formulated as negative. Five items were difficult to understand. The Spanish version of the GDI has been adapted well to the Spanish context.

Abstract The prevalence of reading difficulties (RD) reflects controversial data ranging from 3.1–3.2% to 17.5%. Possible explanations are partly based on the incidence of orthography-specific factors influencing the reading process, but also on methodological differences that hinder comparison of the reported results. For this reason, the present study aims to analyse the prevalence of RD in a sample of 1,408 Spanish-speaking school children by comparing different ways of calculating the prevalence rate. The results reflect a prevalence of 2.2−5.3%, consistent with data reported for predominantly transparent orthographies. Some of the procedures used to identify RD are more accurate in early school years than at more advanced moments of schooling. Furthermore, the consideration of students’ sex when calculating the prevalence of RD seems to represent a more sensitive way of identifying students with RD.
