This paper reports on a portable selective sensor for trace levels of hazardous vapors, which combines a twostage purge and trap vapor pre-concentration system, a MEMS gas-chromatographic (GC) separation column and a miniaturized quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) detector. This is the first demonstration of a miniaturized QEPAS device used as spectroscopic detector downstream of a FAST-GC separation column, demonstrating two-dimensional selectivity and enabling real-world analyses in dirty environments with response time of a few minutes. Furthermore, the integrated sensing system was specifically designed to be rugged and suitable to be deployed on unmanned robotic ground vehicles.

This paper presents a novel process for screen printed electrode fabrication, functionalization and integration in a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fluidics system for electrochemical analysis. The innovative components utilized are: 1. 3D Through-Foil Vias (TFVs) for electrode connection, enabling simple liquid tight lamination of micro-fluidic channels; 2. Screen printed carbon and silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) electrodes on 3D vias; and 3. PET fluidics with a fabrication process compatible with large-area manufacturing. A platform integrating an Ag/AgCl pseudo-reference and a glucose oxidase (GOx)-modified working electrode has been used for glucose sensing in the flexible fluidics system. Detection of small glucose concentrations between 100-400 μM through Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) is shown. The sensor shows linear response and good sensitivity of ~0.8 mA/(mM cm2). By changing the electrode coatings, the same technology can potentially be used for detecting multiple analytes in biofluids.

A Lab-on-a-Chip For The Extraction Of Bacterial Nucleic Acids From Whole Human Blood 从人全血中提取细菌核酸的芯片实验室
M. Hügle, Lara S. Siegel, O. Behrmann, F. Hufert, G. Dame, G. Urban
We present a lab-on-a-chip for the extraction of bacterial nucleic acids from whole human blood (WHB). Compared to classical methods, with extraction times between hours and days, the presented chip can lyse the bacteria suspended in WHB and extract their nucleic acids within three minutes. This is achieved by directly coupling thermal lysis to gel-electrophoresis on a single microfluidic platform.

Accurate sensing and drug delivery at designated locations within the GI-tract is needed to increase the performance and efficacy of smart capsules. In this work, we utilize the near infrared (NIR) penetration of light within the tissue for real-time tracking of a 3D-printed capsule. The capsule incorporates an array of three 875 nm NIR-LEDs powered by an on-board battery. Ex vivo experiments using porcine tissue and a paired photodiode receiver showed a light penetration depth of 6.2 cm. Three on-board batteries (1.5 V, 10 mAh) can provide enough power to continuously track the capsule in the small intestine for 2 hours, thus providing a good coverage of capsule positioning in the jejunum.

This paper presents a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device able to operate up to 900°C, based on a piezoelectric non-ferroelectric glass-ceramic containing fresnoite crystals. This material is synthesized by a classic glassmaking technique and isothermal crystallization heat treatment. Its properties are measured at high temperatures. Input and output interdigital transducers (IDT) are realized on its surface to generate and receive the SAW. It creates a temperature device working up to 800°C, that will further be modified in pressure or humidity sensors by applying the appropriate sensitive layer between the input and the output IDT.

N. K. Heinsohn, Robert R. Niedl, C. Beta
In this work directed DNA motion within a biopolymer network could be successfully implemented and monitored, using a fiber based electrophoresis chip with imprinted electrodes. Conveniently the same electrodes are used for applying the electric field and for current measurement to control the DNA motion simultaneously. This will allow the extension of present DNA detection and verification methods in disposable on-site analytical test systems.

Herein, we present microfluidic devices for sampling of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) diluted in gaseous streams. The scope of this work is to design and fabricate efficient, low-cost sample collectors for on-field application against terrorist and other malicious violent attacks. The main feature of our μ-sampling unit lies on the in-situ deposition and UV polymerization of a protic ionic liquid monomeric salt (MIL) inside an already sealed Si microdevice. Dynamic retention capacities have been assessed with vapors of a nerve agent surrogate, i.e. dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The coated μ–preconcentrators exhibit outstanding breakthrough volumes and higher sorption capacities than those reported for commercial sorbents.

A novel colorimetric sensor system for the detection of carbon monoxide (CO) in low ppm concentrations for early fire gas detection is described. Due to its low power consumption and low fabrication costs the sensor enables the integration into a commercial fire detector.Screen printing methods for depositing thin films allow a fast gas interaction and a high degree of integration of the sensor system. The response of the sensor system to carbon monoxide was characterized both in the laboratory and in real firing tests.

This study presents the development of an original 2-steps Lab-on-chip that aims at isolating Adipose Stem Cells (ASCs), cells of considerable interest for regenerative medicine, from complex biological samples. Based on hydrodynamic filtration, the device pre-isolates ASCs by removing cells with a diameter below 10µm such as red blood cells or lymphocytes.
