After temporary posttransplant PUVA treatment of graft recipients the survival time of rat heart and kidney allografts was significantly prolonged. In the semiallogeneic F1 model all kidney transplant recipients survived without rejection signs. The mechanism of action should be cleared especially the role of cis-urocanic acid and the introduction of the method into clinical organ transplantation is discussed.

The postoperative complications were analysed in 64 patients after operation for stricture of the esophagus. The underfeeding in consequence of the esophagus stricture reduced the cellular immune functions and increased the operative risk. The comparison of the feeding and immune parameters of patients with benign and malign strictures of the esophagus showed that the poor immune reactivity is caused by the underfeeding first of all and not by the immune depression due the tumor.

The treatment of transplants by a combination of 8-methoxypsoralen and longwave ultraviolet radiation (PUVA) leads to prolongation of the transplants in allogeneic receivers without immunosuppression. The rejection of skin grafts in the mice could be delayed significantly. The rejection of kidney and heart allografts could be prevented completely. A significant diminution of the acute rejection crises and a raising of the one-year survival rate showed a first clinical study by means of PUVA treatment in human kidney grafts.

An artificial kidney has been taken into operation in the clinic for surgery of the University of Halle-Wittenberg since 1959. This was the second clinical arrangement in the DDR. The indication of the application evolved by the acute renal failure, about the chronic renal insufficiency, within to the hemodialysis as an additive for kidney transplantation. Coworkers of our clinic were engaged vigorously in the technical development of this method in the GDR.

Biochemical parameters sodium, potassium, lactate, alkaline phosphatase, ASAT, and ALAT were examined at the beginning of the operation, before, and 0, 2, 4, 6 hours after implantation of a small bowel autograft in an autologous model of intestinal transplantation in dogs. By the way of these early biochemical studies we have got information about metabolic situation during organ transplantation, efficiency of preservation and vitality of the graft. Using the given method safe preservation of small bowel can be guaranteed. Postoperatively only little changes of laboratory parameters occur.

The influence of pH, temperature, and albumin content in the incubation medium on the vitality incubated hepatocytes was tested in vitro as well as the effects in the trypan-blue exclusion test. pH changes between 6.8 and 7.4 in the incubation medium have not any influence on the vitality of the hepatocytes or the trypan-blue exclusion test. Reduced vitality results occurred in an initial pH 7.8 in the incubation medium. The vital dye exclusion test is not useful in case of incubation temperature of 4 degrees C, since the results regarding the vitality of the hepatocytes are only apparently better. An addition of human serum albumin is necessary for a good survival of the hepatocytes during the incubation.

The effects of arterial hypoxia on the minute ventilation (AMV), the heart interval (HI), the contractility index (KI = (P/P) max., the left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), and the pressure-increase-time RP were tested before and after infusion of a selective stimulator of the arterial chemoreceptors (0.5 mg/kg Almitrine-Bismesylate). The arterial blood-pH and the paO2 were increased by Almitrine whereas the paCO2 was decreased significantly. The AMV is elevated, the heart interval and the RP-interval are reduced, KI and LVSP increase after Almitrine. The hypoxia-effects after changing the paO2 from 19 to 9 kPa are an increase of AMV, KI, LVSP and a shortening of HI and RP. These effects were intensified by Almitrine. The hypoxia effects were not changed by vagotomy. A correlation between the increase of the respiration and the appertaining cardiac effects was not discovered.

The influence of a mechanical disturbance of the duodenum on the motility of the antrum and duodenum was investigated by means of the electromyography and the perfusion manometry. Thereby the effect of the pentagastrin stimulating the motility of the unstriated muscles of the gastro-intestinal tract was used for testing the function reserve of the antrum- and duodenal-muscles. After one and a half month of establishing the passage obstacle there occurs a complex disturbance of the electrical activity; the unstriated muscles does not react on a stimulating excitation.

An enzyme electrode (GOD, Pt-Ag/AgCl) is introduced for amperometric measurement of the intracorporal glucose concentration in the subcutaneous tissue. Changes of the glucose concentration in the peripheral blood (PG) were induced by glucose- respectively insulin-infusion in healthy dogs. PG was compared with values found by out means of a sensor implanted in the necks of the dogs (SG). The regression equation SG = 0.81 PG - 1.39 was calculated by analysing 62 steady state levels. The regression delta SG = 0.83 delta PG + 0.22 submitted for the deviation of the normoglycemic base-level. A sensibility loss of the sensor of about 10% appears after an implantation duration of 7.5 hours in medium. Conclusions for the further development of the sensors follows especially with the in vivo functions (biocompatibility, diminution, sterilisation).

To evaluate the tissue vascularizing potency of omentum majus different types of pig skin flaps supplied by omentum were risen within an experimental surgical study. The reorientation process of blood flow from autochthonal epigastric to omental vessels was followed up by means of flap transcutaneous pO2 measurements. The fitness of tissue tpO2 method which results were found to be in good accordance with clinical experiences of flap surviving and healing will be discussed.
