Ameliorating effect of Berberis lycium root bark extracts against cisplatin-induced nephropathy in rat 枸杞子根皮提取物对顺铂所致大鼠肾病的改善作用

The aim of this study was to investigate the sub-acute nephroprotective effect of Berberis lycium root bark extracts against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Aqueous and methanol extracts (200 and 400 mg/kg) were co-administered with cisplatin (4 mg/kg) for 19 days. Results showed that cisplatin significantly (ap<0.05) raised the serum creatinine, uric acid, urea level as well as tissue MDA level as compared to control group. It decreased GST activity, tGSH and catalase activity in rats.  Both extracts significantly reduced the serum creatinine, urea and uric acid levels. Moreover, GST, CAT activity and tGSH content were significantly (p<0.05) increased and MDA level was decreased. Histopathological examination showed that both extracts efficiently reversed the morphological changes and damage induced by cisplatin. It is concluded that both extracts of B. lycium root bark possess nephroprotective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.

Potential of Mimosa pudica leaf in the treatment of ulcerative colitis in rat 含羞草叶治疗大鼠溃疡性结肠炎的潜力

The aim of present investigation was to validate its folk use in the treatment of ulcerative colitis in the rat model. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into nine groups with six animals in each group. The rats received seven days of pretreatment with chloroform, ethyl acetate or ethanolic extract of Mimosa pudica. For induction of ulcerative colitis, rats were administered with 2 mL of 4% acetic acid solution intrarectally. Ulcer index, macroscopical study of the colon, myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde levels in colon tissue and blood, and histopathology of the colon tissue were studied. Intrarectal instillation of acetic acid caused increased ulcer index, colonic myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde. Pretreatment with M. pudica ethanolic extract (400 mg/kg) significantly lowered the ulcer index, colonic myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde as compared with the standard drug prednisolone. The present investigation demonstrates that the ethanol extract of M. pudica leaf is effective in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Serum osteocalcin and urinary free deoxypyridinoline as potential risk factors in predicting the prevalence of bone trauma among the post-menopausal Chinese women 血清骨钙素和尿游离脱氧吡啶啉作为预测绝经后中国妇女骨外伤患病率的潜在危险因素

This study was designed to understand whether the post-menopausal Chinese women (n=175) receiving tablet containing vitamin D (500 IU) and calcium (500 mg) had lower incidence of bone fracture compared to the post-menopausal Chinese women ((n=175) receiving a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein  (milk, cheese, and yogurt, soybeans, spinach, fish including fatty fish, cheese, egg). This study assessed whether the levels of serum osteocalcin and urinary free deoxypyridinoline could be used as predictors of early bone trauma during post-menopausal period. After randomization, subjects were followed-up for up to 3 years to capture required data. The results suggested that therapeutic intervention (vitamin D and calcium) does not predict bone fracture among the post-menopausal Chinese women. However, correlation analysis revealed that the decreased level of serum osteocalcin and urinary free deoxypyridinoline were associated with higher incidence of fracture. The results suggest that the low level of serum osteocalcin and urinary free deoxypyridinoline cause increase susceptibility of fracture among the post-menopausal Chinese women.

Nephroprotective effect of Berberis baluchistanica against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rabbit 俾路支小檗对庆大霉素肾毒性的保护作用

The present study was conducted to explore the protective effect of B. baluchistanica against gentamicin-induced renal toxicity in rabbits. Phytochemical investigations lead to the isolation of berberine and palmatine. The crude hydro-methanolic extract at various doses (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight) elicited strong nephroprotective effects by restoring various biomarkers which were deranged by gentamicin  such as creatinine, urea, serum uric acid levels (p<0.001) in plasma and urine output creatinine clearance, urinary protein and γ-glutamyl transferase level (p<0.001) in urine in a dose dependent manner. The mediators involved in oxidative stress such malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase levels were significantly (P˂0.05-0.001) modulated in kidney tissue homogenate. Correspondingly, there is a significant (P<0.05) recovery in kidney weight and % loss in body weight compare to GM group. Snapshot of the pharmaceutical promotional literature of Bangladesh: A critical review 孟加拉国药品宣传文献综述

The present research was conducted to evaluate the quality of pharmaceutical promotional literature. Indications was mentioned in 88.2% promotional literature and less than half (40.0, 33.9 and 38.9%) of these contains side effects, precautions and contraindications respectively. Among the provided information 67.3%, 16.5%, 19.5% and 24.0% matched with the BDNF/BNF respectively. Scientific articles (73.3%) were cited most followed by commercial online sources (15.5%), data on file (4.2%), regulatory body approval data (2.9%), product monograph (2.7%) and textbook/reference book (1.6%). Only half (50.2%) of these cited references were retrievable and no ‘data on file’ could be retrieved. Though most (73.2%) of the promotional claims were true, 13.7, 5.9, 4.6 and 2.6% were identified as false, exaggerated, ambiguous and controversial respectively. This revelation about the quality of promotional literature might an eye opener for the policy makers. More importantly, this may bring alertness among the physicians during interpretation of pharmaceutical promotion literature.

This review article aims to provide an update on the sources, pharmaco-logical and biological profile of a β-carboline alkaloid, harmine which is a major bioactive component of various plants mainly Peganum harmala. Harmine’s wide range of pharmacological properties has been well-documented as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective, anti-depressant, and antimicrobial. Although reported data suggests a multifunctional pharmacological role of harmine but farther experimentation on its molecular mechanism of action, synthetic chemistry approaches, and preclinical studies are yet obligatory to fully uncover its pharmacological efficacy.

Evaluation of anticoagulant and thrombolytic activity of Berberis orthobotrys in animal model 小檗抗凝和溶栓活性的动物模型评价

Fundamental to this research was the evaluation of anticoagulant and thrombolytic potential of Berberis orthobotrys using clotting time, prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time performed at 2.5, 5, 10% concentration. Aqueous-methanol extract significantly (p<0.05) increased the coagulation parameters both in human blood as well as in rabbit blood and exhibited the more salient effect on prolongation of these coagulation parameters at 10% concentration. Aqueous methanol extract (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) produced the preferential increase in bleeding time and clotting time nevertheless the effect was more perceptible after 90 min at 100 mg/kg. Moreover, the crude extract presented a substantial increase in coagulation parameters after 7 days of administration in rabbits with more pronounced effects at the highest dose. HPLC profile of aqueous methanol extract revealed the presence of quercetin, p-coumaric acid, gallic acid, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzoic acid. Thus, the present study provides the pharmacological basis for its medical use in cardiovascular and other thrombotic disorders.

This study was aimed to determine the effects of lycorine, a toxic crystalline alkaloid, on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells proliferation, migration and invasion, and to investigate the mechanism involved. The cells were cultured with different concentrations of lycorine in vitro. MTT assays were performed to determine the proliferation of cells. Transwell assays were performed to measure the migration and invasion of cells. The activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and expression were assayed by Western blot. This study showed that proliferation, migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells could be inhibited by lycorine. Furthermore, we found that Wnt/β-catenin signaling was markedly blocked in MDA-MB-321 cells treated with lycorine. In conclusion, lycorine inhibits the proliferation, migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells that is associated with the suppression of Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

Anti-snake venom potential of Clerodendrum serratum extracts on Bungarus caeruleus and Daboia russelii venom 荆芥提取物对黄颡鱼和黄颡鱼毒的抗蛇毒作用研究

Anti-snake venom therapy is the only treatment for snake bite but leads to acute and chronic conditions which may be severe. The medicinal plants have gained importance over years to find an effective alternative to anti-snake venom. The present study focused on evaluating the potential of Clerodendrum serratum for the anti-snake venom activity. Phytochemicals were extracted from the C. serratum with different solvents. The ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts were found to neutralize the major enzyme toxins (phospholipase A2, protease and hyaluronidase) of Bungarus caeruleus and Daboia russelii venom at a concentration of 100 µg/mL. The fibrinogenolytic activity of both the venoms were neutralized. The study proves that the plant C. serratum possesses certain compounds which inhibit the toxins present in the venom of B. caeruleus and D. russelii.

Isolation of phytoconstituents and evaluation of biological potentials of Berberis hispanica from Algeria 阿尔及利亚小檗的植物成分分离及生物学潜力评价

The aim of this study was to isolate the phytoconstituents and evaluate the biological activities of Berberis hispanica. Three phenolic compounds (tamarixetin, caffeic acid and rutin)  were isolated from B. hispanica. The structures of the pure compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric analyses, including 1D-, 2D-NMR, and HPLC-TOF/MS. In addition, antimicrobial, anti-oxidant and anti-proliferative effects of the extracts, some fractions and isolated compounds were evaluated. The extracts of B. hispanica were evaluated against six bacterial strains and exhibited the highest activity against Klebsiella pneumonia (15 mm at 100 mg/mL). Fraction T36 (IC50<5 μg/mL) from the n-butanol extract displayed higher radical scavenging activity than butylated hydroxytoluene. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative effects against human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cell line by real time cell analyzer assay and tamarixetin exhibited the remarkable effect (IC50<50 μg/mL) on HeLa cells. This study supports the documented medicinal effects of B. hispanica.
