We give results for nonlinear one-ports regarding the relationship between negative differential resistance at a particular dc operating point and the stability of that operating point. In particular, we illustrate that the presence of negative differential resistance does not necessarily imply instability for any positive resistive port termination hut that it does imply instability for either an open-circuit or a short-circuit termination.

The relationship between the finite discrete Zak transform and the finite Gabor expansion are discussed in this paper. We present two DFT-based algorithms for computing Gabor coefficients. One is based upon the time-split Zak transform, the other upon the frequency-split Zak transform. These two methods are time and frequency dual pairs. Furthermore, we extend the relationship between the finite discrete Zak transform and the Gabor expansion to the 2-D case and compute 2-D Gabor expansion coefficients through the 2-D discrete Zak transform and 4-D DFT. Four methods can be applied in the 2-D case. They are time-time-split, time-frequency-split, frequency-time-split and frequency-frequency-split.

In this paper a new type of maximally decimated FIR cosine modulated filter bank is proposed. Each analysis and synthesis filter in this filter bank has linear phase. We can design the system to have approximate reconstruction property (pseudo-QMF system) or perfect reconstruction property (PR system). The filter bank is paraunitary in the PR case. Although there are 2M channels in the new system, the cost (in terms of design and implementation complexity) is comparable to that of an M channel system. Correspondingly, the coding gain of the new system is also comparable to that of a traditional M channel system (rather than a 2M channel system). Examples will be given to demonstrate that very good attenuation characteristics can be obtained with the new system. >

We present a new method for detecting groups of symmetric variables in completely specified Boolean functions. The canonical Generalized Reed-Muller forms are used as a powerful analysis tool. To reduce the search space a set of signatures which identify quickly sets of potentially symmetric variables has been developed. Detecting symmetries of any number of inputs is done simultaneously. Totally symmetric functions can be detected very quickly. The traditional definitions of symmetry have been extended to include more types allowing the grouping of input variables into more classes. Experiments have been performed on MCNC benchmark circuits and the results are very encouraging. >
