Introduction: Street foods are food and drink which are processed on the selling spot and/or served as ready-to-consume foods by food vendors to sell to people. Foods and drinks which are rested for too long in the environment will make it possible to get contaminated by pathogen microbes and then results in disease. One of the microbes that is considerably contaminating street foods is Salmonella. We aim to identify Salmonella on drink which are offered in the canteens of Public Elementary School. Methods: This research is design as a descriptive observational, including incubation in Selenite broth, streak in MacConkey agar, and species identification using biochemical tests. Results: There were no Salmonella sp. in drinks sample of street foods which are offered both inside and outside the canteens of Public Elementary School 1 Surabaya, but other gram-negative bacteria contaminated foods. Conclusion: The street foods in elementary school, both the main ingredients and tools used during food processing and serving, still have contamination from pathogen, especially gram-negative bacteria. The vendors and sellers need to be taught how to process and serve foods in better hygiene.

Introduction: The prevalence of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in Indonesia is increasing over the last decade. Most cases highest risk factor are Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and hypertension. Other factors such as lifestyle and environment; both play important role in the development of ESRD. Thus, this study aimed to assess the characteristic of patient with ESRD.Methods: This was a descriptive study acquired by interviewing 126 patients with ESRD who have been undergoing continuous hemodialysis in dialysis unit of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya for at least 3 months using questionnaire about history of disease, smoking habit, sex, and ethnic group. All data was analyzed using frequency distribution and percentage. Results: Form 126 patients, consist of 61 male patients (48.4%) and 65 female (51.6%). 45 patients (35.7%) have the history of DM; 98 patients (77.0%) of hypertension; 35 patients (27.8%) of hypertension and DM; and 19 patients (15.1%) have none of them. Later age adult (36-45 years old) has the largest group proportion (34.13%). There are 36 patients (28%) who are smokers. 108 patients (85.7%) are Javanese. Conclusion: Most of the patients have hypertension as the risk factor and in later age group adult. Characteristics of patient with ESRD is caused by multifactorial factors. Therefore, patient with high risk factor should be aware and do preventive steps in progressiveness of the disease.

Introduction Hypercholesterolemia contributes as a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction in the kidneys and worsens the condition of patients with previous kidney damage. This study aimed to examine the effect of hypercholesterol diet in kidney structure. Methods: This was an experimental study, a case control using eight-week-old Rattus novergicus, divided into control and treatment group. High-fat diet (HFD) was administrated orally to treatment group for 14 days. All data statistically analyzed with two-paired ANOVA and post hoc for comparison. Results: Histological analysis using hematoxylin-eosin staining showed degeneration in nephrons, including glomerulosclerosis, segmental necrosis and tubular defects. The mononuclear cell infiltration was Increased in HFD group significantly (P<0.05).Conclusion: We concluded that a high fat diet induced obesity and may lead to renal deformities as a result of histopathological changes such as dilatation, tubular defects, inflammation and connective tissue enlargement of the kidney.

Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) plays an important role in mediating transduction signal of hematopoiesis, including in the pathogenesis of Myeloproliferative diseases (MPD). Various studies have been carried out to identify the position of aleles in tyrosine encoding mutations. Although the effect of JAK2 mutations is still not fully understood, the discovery of these mutations might be able to differentiate the types of polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocytemia, and primary myelofibrosis with malignant abnormalities. WHO has revised the MPD diagnosis criteria following this finding. This review will discuss the role of JAK2.

An overweight individual has morphological changes in the muscle resulting functional impairment and can cause reduction in body balance system. Balance is an ability to maintain both static and dynamic equilibrium on various positions. An overweight person will experience a decrease in abdominal muscle strength and center of gravity shift. Physical training has positive effects to increase body balance. Stretching exercise maintains and increases the elasticity of muscle, tendon, fascia, ligament and joint motion and improve balance. Resistance exercise increases muscle performance which has benefit effect on balance system dynamically. The proprioceptive, an important part of balance maintenance to feel joint position or body when moving, can be improved by training that performed using balance board. Mechanoreceptor that is stimulated and the adaptation of the body's balance control that is influenced by balance board training results a good proprioceptive.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing in Indonesia, furthermore, it requires high treatment cost such as conservative therapy and kidney transplantation or dialysis. There are two types of dialysis; hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis. The patient who undergoes HD needs periodical laboratories evaluation due to its impact on hemoglobin (Hb), leukocyte and platelets. The purpose of this study was to obtain the levels of Hb, leukocyte and platelets regularly in stage 5 CKD patients undergoing HD.Methods: Data were collected from patients’ medical record from October to December 2014 and it was characterized based on age, sex, HD frequency, HD period, hemoglobin, iron saturation, ESA (erythropoiesis-stimulating agent), leukocyte level and platelets level. 60 samples were included with the same ratio. Results: The average of age was 45 years old and the average of HD period was 40 months. All patients suffered anemia, however, only 51 patients could be evaluated the iron saturation. From it, 37 patients had the iron saturation of ≥20% which 14 (38%) of them received ESA. There were 14 patients who suffered zinc deficiency anemia with the iron saturation of <20% which 4 (29%) of them received ESA.Conclusion: Most of patients’ leukocyte and platelets levels were normal. Patients who received ESA had higher Hb levels. Platelets levels had a reverse correlation with the longer period of hemodialysis.

Introduction: Ghrelin has been recognized to have a major influence on energy balance. Hence, the discovery of various regulatory factors that control ghrelin secretion may have major implications for the development of drugs and diet control. This study aims to analyze differences in ghrelin secretion pattern and prevention of hunger in the provision of breakfast in low-calorie breakfast, low energy density and high energy density in obese female adolescents. Methods: Subjects were female students aged 18-22 years with a BMI=25 kg/m², receiving low-calorie breakfast with low (n=8) and high energy density (n=8). Before the breakfast, subjects fasted for 12 hours and were subjected to plasma ghrelin level and hunger measurement using visual analog scale (VAS). Breakfast was done at 08.00, divided into three parts and each was taken for 5 minutes. Measurement of plasma ghrelin was carried out again post prandial (PP) at 2 hours and 4 hours. VAS filling was done 1 hour PP, 2 hours PP, 3 hours PP, and 4 hours PP.Result: There were differences in plasma ghrelin level, but not significant. VAS 1 analysis of hunger (p=0.040) at 4 hours PP and VAS 3 of satiety (p=0.025) was significantly different at 3 hours PP. Conclusion: Food density did not affect the plasma ghrelin levels. Low density foods are more effective to prevent hunger in 4 hours PP and increases satiety in 3 hours PP.
