New hosts for Choanatiara lunata. 新月怪的新主人。

Choanatiara lunata is a coelomycetous fungus producing conidia with funnel-shaped appendages. The species was originally reported on fallen needles of Pinus resinosa and P. strobus in Ontario, Canada. Our systematic work on coelomycetes in Pinus spp. was carried out on 29 different pine hosts (species, varieties, forms or cultivars) at the arboretum of the Montreal Botanical Garden. Choanatiara lunata was isolated (on PDA, MA, CMA) from 9 (31%) of the pine hosts investigated. From those, four hosts are species indigenous to North America: P. albicaulis (subgenus Haploxylon), P. resinosa, P. ponderosa, and P. jeffreyi (subgenus Diploxylon). The other five hosts are pines exotic to North America. Three are indigenous to Europe: P. nigra ‘Laricio’, P. nigra ‘Nigra’, and P. nigra ‘Pallasiana’ (subgenus Diploxylon), and two are indigenous to East Asia: P. densiflora and P. tabulaeformis (subgenus Diploxylon). Control of Botrytis cinerea by Gliocladium roseum was investigated in detached raspberry shoots maintained in high humidity. Sporulation incidence of B. cinerea in leaf disks, stem segments, stamens, and pistils respectively from shoots inoculated with 103, 104. 105, and 106 conidia of the pathogen mL-1 increased from 13 to 100%, 7 to 100%, 38 to 100%, and 6 to 94%. When shoots were challenge-inoculated after 24 h with 104 to 108 conidia of G. roseum mL-1, in all combinations, sporulation of the pathogen was suppressed completely in leaves, and by > 97% in stems when density of the antagonist was 107 conidia mL-1. Sporulation of the pathogen in stamens and pistils was suppressed more effectively when density of the antagonist was proportionately high. G. roseum developed more extensively in leaves and stamens when postinoculation wetness lasted at least 12 to 24 h at 20 to 30°C, and controlled sporulation of B. cinerea more effectively when conditions allowed the antagonist to establish endophytically. Plant-parasitic nematodes associated with turfgrass in golf courses in southern Ontario 与安大略省南部高尔夫球场草坪草相关的植物寄生线虫

One hundred thirty-five soil samples, collected from 15 golfcourses throughout southern Ontario in 1995, 1997, and 1998 were analysed for the presence of plant-parasitic nematodes. Criconemoides spp., Helicotylenchus spp., Heterodera spp., Hoplolaimus spp., Meloidogyne spp., Paratylenchus spp., Pratylenchus spp., Tylenchorhynchus spp., and Xiphinema spp. were recorded. The ring nematodes, Criconemoides spp., and the pin nematodes, Paratylenchus spp., were present in all 15 golf courses. The lesion nematodes, Pratylenchus spp., and the spiral nematodes, Helicotylenchus spp., were present in 14 courses. The lance nematodes, Hoplolaimus spp., were present in 13 courses. The stunt nematodes, Tylenchorhynchus spp., were present in 12 golf courses. Four species of the lesion nematode were recorded: Pratylenchus crenatus, P. neglectus, P. fallax, and P. thornei. This is the first report of P. fallax in Ontario, and the first detection of P. thornei on turf in the province.

A putative two-component signal transduction system was amplified and cloned from the plant pathogenic bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli var. fuscans isolate BXPF65. The 620 bp amplified fragment was sequenced and analyzed with the BLAST Enhanced Alignment Utility (BEAUTY). BEAUTY analysis indicates that the putative xanthomonad response regulator contains regions which matched to an ATP phosphorylation site, a σ54-factor interaction domain, and the “receiver” domains of various transcriptional regulators of the two-component signal transduction systems. Similar analysis indicates that the putative histidine kinase has homology with conserved “transmitter” domains of sensor proteins in two-component signal transduction systems. RFLP analysis using the putative signal transduction system showed polymorphisms among the strains.

Isolates of Phytophthora infestans were collected from British Columbia at various times during 1993-1997 and from eight other provinces in Canada during 1993-1995 and characterized for mating type (either Al or A2), growth response to metalaxyl (either sensitive-MS or insensitive-MI), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns. Among the isolates tested, 312 were from diseased potato cultivars, while 14 originated from tomato or hairy nightshade plants with blight symptoms. A composite of RAPD patterns generated by nine primers following PCR amplification was used to identify novel genotypes based on presence of polymorphic bands. The occurrence in Canada of genotypes that corresponded to US I, US 6, US 7, and US 8 was confirmed during this study.
