The DAMASCOS (Damage Assessment in Smart Composite Structures) project is a European Union funded programme of work bringing together a number of academic and industrial partners throughout Europe. The aim of DAMASCOS is to apply new ultrasonic detection and generation techniques integrated within the structure, together with advanced signal processing to realise damage assessment and ageing characterisation in composite structures. This paper describes the background, experimental findings and future applications of the technology as the project moves into its final phase.

CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastics) fuselage structures are expected to be realized with future generations of aircraft. Going into the postbuckling regime with these structures requires improved, fast and reliable procedures for analysis and design of stiffened fibre composite panels. The EC project POSICOSS, which was started in the year 2000, develops such procedures. This article deals with the main objectives of the project, the theoretical and experimental work to be carried out, and with first results.

Global commerce and the mobility of private persons are based on a well functioning air transportation system. Beside this increasing demand air transportation has to limit its impact on the atmosphere and its contribution to the predicted global warming. Information exchange and permanent dialogue among the stakeholders in aviation and with the atmospheric scientists supports the necessary strategic decisions to guarantee its sustainable development. AERONET has been established to serve this purpose in Europe and has demonstrated its successful working.

EMERTA is concerned with the implications of two emerging technologies and associated concepts for aeronautical use, Next Generation Satellite Systems (NGSS) and Airborne Separation Assurance Systems (ASAS). Concerned with first steps in the use of both technologies, EMERTA establishes the feasibility of using NGSS services ‘as they are’ to meet Air Traffic Service and Airline Operation Centre requirements and assesses the practical feasibility of the early introduction of ASAS applications in Europe.

One of the most promising routes to increase capacity at over-crowded European airports is to reduce the separation distances between aircraft on landing and take-off, or vertical separations in densely flown en-route sectors. Separations are necessary to avoid the risk of encountering a wake from a preceding aircraft - and hence are vital for flight safety. This is becoming even more critical with the advent of very-large transport aircraft. This article explains the characterisation of wave vortices, and explores the European Projects looking at the problem.

An overview of the work performed in the Brite-Euram programme EDAVCOS: ‘Efficient design and verification of composite structures’ is given. The development and validation of design and analysis methods for sandwich panels, stiffened panels, shear webs and bolted joints are briefly described. The review of current airworthiness procedures is outlined and some results are presented. Some general conclusions from the programme are also given.
