We have investigated the role of Esculentoside A in the progression of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in Human MLE-12 cells. The results of the studies show that Esculentoside A enhances the viability of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae-infected MLE-12 cells and suppresses cell apoptosis. EsA also suppresses mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress in lung epithelial cells caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections. The data further confirmed that Esculentoside A could relieve mitochondrial damage, apoptosis, and oxidative stress in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia-infected lung epithelial cells by regulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.

In periodontitis, increased endoplasmic reticulum stress followed by apoptosis and cell death in periodontal ligament cells further exacerbates periodontium destruction. Hispolon, a traditional Chinese medicine, could attenuate cell death induced by excessive oxidation. However, its role in oxidative stress and apoptosis in periodontitis is still unclear. To this end, the effect of the increasing dosage of hispolon on the reversal of the increase in cell viability caused by lipopolysaccharide in periodontal ligament cells in a periodontitis cell model was evaluated. The results show a dose-dependent hispolon promotion of cell viability in periodontal ligament cells. Cells treated with hispolon exhibited a decrease in cell apoptosis and a reduction in endoplasmic reticulum stress (Activating Transcription Factor 4, Glucose-Regulated Protein 78, and C/EBP-homologous protein) and inflammation (tumor necrosis factor-α, Interleukin-18, and Interleukin-6) levels than the lipopolysaccharide alone group. To further investigate the underlying mechanism(s), the relative expression of phosphorylation of extracellularly regulated protein kinases and phosphorylation of Jun N-terminal kinase in periodontal ligament cells were measured. The results show that hispolon attenuated lipopolysaccharide-induced inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis by deactivating the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. In conclusion, hispolon reduces endoplasmic reticulum stress and alleviates apoptosis of periodontal ligament cells in periodontitis, and the protective mechanism is associated with the deactivation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway.

Type 2 diabetes often leads to compromised muscle endurance. Herein, we have explored the effect of Huanglian, a traditional Chinese medicine herb, on muscle endurance in patients with type 2 diabetes. To this end, type 2 diabetes patients aged 18–60 years were recruited and treated with anti-diabetic drugs, or anti-diabetic drugs plus 20 g of Huanglian daily, for one month. All subjects were instructed in muscle endurance assessment guided by the videos from the App in the clinic setting. The baseline and post-intervention muscle endurance values were recorded through the app and compared. The treatment group receiving Huanglian had higher muscle endurance than the control group. Multivariate regression analysis showed that lower limb muscle endurance (OR = 4.282, 95% CI: 1.537–11.928) and upper abdominal muscle endurance (OR = 4.632, 95% CI: 1.847–11.618) were correlated with Huanglian treatment. In conclusion, the level of muscle endurance of the lower limbs and upper abdominals is positively correlated with Huanglian decoction treatment in diabetic patients. The sensitivity of this video-guided test method is comparable to that of traditional equipment and more conducive to clinical application.

We have evaluated the clinical benefits of Shenshu Dingchuan decoction in chronic bronchial asthma patients treated with budesonide or formoterol. To this end, chronic bronchial asthma patients were divided into two groups and treated with budesonide or formoterol alone (the control group) or budesonide or formoterol plus Shenshu Dingchuan decoction (the treatment group). Shenshu Dingchuan decoction combined with budesonide formoterol decreased traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores, elevated forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, and forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity levels, decreased fractional exhaust nitric oxide and total immunoglobulin E levels, and the elevated total effective rate after treatment. In conclusion, these observed changes reflect a marked clinical improvement in lung function.

This study was designed to explore whether Chinese herbals could enhance the clinical efficacy of levofloxacin and a combination of antituberculosis drugs. To this end, a group of pulmonary patients were treated with pyrazinamide, isoniazid, ethambutol, and levofloxacin (control), and the other group (treatment) also received a combination of extra Chinese herbal compounds. After 6 months of therapy, the total efficiency of lesion absorption in the treatment group was higher than in the control group. The treatment group had a higher peak expiratory flow rate, a higher percentage of forced vital capacity, a higher percentage of the first second of forced expiration, higher levels of immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M, and CD4+, and lower levels of CD8+ compared to the control group. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines were lower, the sputum conversion rate was higher, and the recurrence rate was lower in the treatment group than the control group. After therapy, the treatment group had higher scores in the quality of daily life, spirit, appetite, fatigue, and sleep assessments. In conclusion, therapy with levofloxacin and antituberculosis drugs combined with Chinese herbal compounds for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis could effectively relieve the inflammatory reaction, promote lesion absorption, and thus improve their lung function and promote recovery.

The effect of behavioral training and nursing intervention on the postoperative recovery and nutritional status of elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia was examined. The frequency and duration of bladder spasm episodes and the incidence of adverse effects were lower in the patients receiving research than in the control group (P < 0.05). The self-rating anxiety scale and the self-rating depression scale decreased in both groups after the nursing intervention and were lower in the research group than in the control group (P < 0.05), while the General Quality of Life Assessment Questionnaire scores increased in both groups and were higher in the research group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the level of satisfaction was significantly higher in the research group than the control group (P < 0.05). Finally, the number of people with good nutritional status was higher in the research group, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was lower than in the control group (P < 0.05). Thus, we recommend behavioral training in nursing for benign prostatic hyperplasia patients in the future to improve their postoperative rehabilitation and nutritional status.

The effect of Tongmai Tangyanming Capsules on diabetic retinopathy in zebrafish was investigated. Zebrafish were intraperitoneally injected with streptozotocin to stimulate diabetic retinopathy. Treatment of diabetic zebrafish with Tongmai Tangyanming Capsules diminished the progression of diabetic retinopathy by regulating the expression of pro-inflammatory biomarkers and nitric oxide. The results of this study offer an experimental basis for the use of this drug in diabetic retinopathy treatment and increase the selection of preventive drugs for diabetic retinopathy development.

We are in the process of recovering patients undergoing treatments with Sophora flavescens (experimental) or potassium permanganate (control) fumigation following anal fistula surgery. The experimental group had a shorter wound healing time and lower pain measurement on the Visual Analogue Scale on postoperative days 7 and 14 than the control group (P < 0.05). Although no inter-group notable difference was identified in clinical efficacy (P > 0.05), the anal function of the experimental group was improved, and the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were lower after treatment (P < 0.05). Assessment of the nutritional status after surgery, key to postoperative recovery, showed that the weight and upper arm circumference decreased in both groups after treatment, but the experimental group was higher than the control group (P < 0.05), and prealbumin, albumin, and transferrin were also higher in the experimental group than in the control group after treatment (P < 0.05). Finally, the two groups did not differ significantly in adverse reactions and relapse (P > 0.05). SF facilitates wound healing after anal fistula surgery, mitigates patient pain, and improves anal health.

In this study, we have explored the reasons for the poor efficiency of 3′-deoxyadenosine in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The effects of cordycepin and methotrexate on osteoclastogenesis were evaluated using the culture system of rat whole bone marrow cells and immunofluorescence staining with Kat1, a novel cell-surface antigen specifically expressed on rat osteoclasts. The effect of cordycepin on osteoclast formation was evaluated by tartaric acid-resistant phosphatase staining of bone marrow cell culture lines (pre-osteoclast formation lines) in which mesenchymal cells were removed. In the bone marrow culture system for evaluating osteoclastogenesis, methotrexate-induced suppression of osteoclastogenesis was abrogated only by the addition of cordycepin. In the pre-osteoclast formation system, cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine) was found to have no significant effect on osteoclast formation. To sum up, cordycepin should be carefully used in some cases of rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate and in the severe stages of rheumatoid arthritis.

Iodine nutrition plays a central role in the normal physiological function of the thyroid gland, and it is a major factor in thyroid hormone synthesis. A meta-analysis was used to measure the efficacy of oral iodine-131 combined with nutritional management in thyroid cancer patients after surgery. Computer searches were conducted on various databases, with the search time limited to January 2011 to December 2021, and the literature retrieved was limited to randomized controlled trials. Data extraction and quality evaluation were performed for the included literature, and meta-analysis was conducted by RevMan 5.3 software. A total of 9 literatures were obtained, all in English, with a sample size of 10,219 cases, containing 6,845 cases in the study group (oral iodine-131 + nutritional management) together with 3,374 cases in the control group (oral iodine-131 alone). The study group received oral administration of iodine-131 and nutritional management (low-iodine diet). The outcomes of the meta-analysis revealed that the clinical symptoms of thyroid cancer patients were improved after oral administration of iodine-131 after surgery. No statistical differences could be observed in the incidence of adverse reactions, recurrence rate, or metastasis rate of outcome indicators. To sum up, oral administration of iodine-131 combined with nutritional management has certain clinical effects in patients with thyroid cancer after surgery, but due to the limited literature included and low data quality, the conclusions of this study still need to be further verified.
