Abstract: Oral candidiasis is a widely known mucosal fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida species. Children and infants are highly more susceptible to Candida infection than adults. We report an oral candidiasis case in a 5-year-old girl with white spots on her lips and tongue. When the white spots were scrapped off, they would be detached leaving red patches on the mucosal surfaces. The patient had pacifier sucking habit and tended to place the pacifier everywhere carelessly. Previously, the patient was treated at a primary healthcare center and received nystatin therapy. However, there was no improvement at all after the therapy. Based on her current and historical conditions, the patient was diagnosed as oral candidiasis, and in this case nystatin administration was ineffective. Therefore, the patient required better oral hygiene management, and the medication given was a gargle containing 0.1% hyaluronic acid. A week after using the gargle without using pacifier anymore, white spots had disappeared, and oral hygiene had improved. Re-control was conducted one month after the first visit and no Candida infection was detected. In conclusion, gargle containing 0.1% hyaluronic acid associated with better dental and oral hygiene is effective to treat oral candidiasis in children. Keywords: oral candidiasis; children; pacifier sucking habit; gargle containing 0.1% hyaluronic acid

Abstract: Relationship between body mass index (BMI) and dental caries in children has been studied in several countries and shows varying results. Poor dental and oral health will have an impact on several aspects of the quality of life of children such as speaking and chewing, resulting in malnutrition and undernutrition. Meanwhile, intake of foods rich in carbohydrates is a risk factor for overweight or obesity, and can also cause caries. This study aimed to review the relationship between BMI and caries prevalence in children. This was a literature review study using databases obtained from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink with related topics. The results showed that there were five literatures that showed no relationship between BMI and the incidence of caries in children. One literature stated that a high BMI was significantly associated with a lower probability of caries occurrence. In conclusion, there was no relationship between body mass index and caries prevalence in children, albeit, a literature stated that a higher BMI was associated with a lower chance of caries. Abstract: Concerning maritime tourism, during diving, various types of pressure changes usually occur, especially atmospheric pressure which can result in barodontalgia or pain in the teeth due to changes in pressure. Lack of knowledge about barodontalgia and control of dentists can make divers prone to experience pain and discomfort in areas of teeth that have certain indications such as dental caries, damaged restorations, pulpitis, pulp necrosis, apical periodontitis, periodontal pockets, impacted teeth, root fractures, and residual cysts. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge about barodontalgia among domestic tourist divers in Manado. This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. Respondents were 40 domestic tourist divers taken by total sampling technique. The results showed that respondents with good level of knowledge about barodontalgia had a percentage of 13%; those with fair knowledge were 50%; and those who had poor knowledge were 37%. In conclusion, the majority of domestic tourist divers in Manado have fair level of knowledge about barodontalgia. Abstract: Concerning victim identity, dental medical record can be used as the victim’s data before death (antemortem) compared with data after death (postmortem). Incompleteness of the medical record describes the health services provided and the quality of the medical record. Incomplete medical record documents can interfere with health workers in identifying a patient's medical history. This study aimed to describe the completeness and suitability of dental medical records at Tanawangko primary health center (PHC) in 2018–2022 in terms of dental medical record guidelines compiled by the Directorate of Basic Health Efforts, Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia in 2015. This was a descriptive and observational study using simple random sampling method. The population included all dental medical record data at Tanawangko PHC in 2018 – 2022. The results showed that the average completeness and suitability of all dental medical records at Tanawangko PHC was relatively low and there were no odontogram sheets and patient supporting sheets found. In conclusion, the completeness and suitability of dental medical records at Tanawangko PHC is relatively low. Background: The Indonesian version of caries management by risk assessment (CAMBRA) is a common caries risk assessment for children aged 0–5 years. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the frequency of dental visits have decreased, making it difficult to assess the caries risk in children. Smartphones and operating systems such as Android are expected to be useful for parents to assess the caries risk of their children. The education level of parents has an impact of its use. The research about the Indonesian version of CAMBRA Android–based application in children aged 0–5 years with highly educated parents has never been done in Indonesia. Purpose: To analyze the accuracy of Android–based application “SKOR GIGI” in assessing the caries risk of children aged 0–5 years by highly educated parents. Methods: This study was conducted in kindergarten, pre-primary school, and Dental Hospital of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia with 37 highly educated parents as participants. Participants filled out the informed consent and SKOR GIGI application. Six days later, dentists filled out the Indonesian version of CAMBRA. The results of this study were statistically tested to see the sensitivity, specificity, and the comparison between the variables. Results: The sensitivity test of SKOR GIGI application showed 96.3%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, and negative predictive value 90.9%. The comparative test with McNemar showed a p-value of 1.000, which means there is no significant difference between the caries risk assessment of children aged 0–5 years using SKOR GIGI application and the Indonesian version of CAMBRA. Conclusion: SKOR GIGI application can be used to assess the caries risk of children aged 0–5 years by highly educated parents.

Background: Using fixed orthodontic appliances inhibits oral hygiene, which can lead to the increased development of biofilms and Streptococcus mutans, a cariogenic bacterium that is well known for causing dental caries, derived from bacteria of the Streptococcus genus. In order to decrease biofilm and the degree of cariogenic bacteria in the oral cavity, a variety of herbal ingredients are used. Among these, mobe (Artocarpus lakoocha Buch. Ham) leaves are herbal ingredients with antibacterial properties. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity, antibiofilm, and leakage of DNA and protein from mobe leaves. Methods: The diffusion method was used to assess antibacterial activity and determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. The antibiofilm activity was evaluated with Ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry (600 nm), using violet crystal staining. The detection of DNA and protein leakage was carried out by checking for absorbance values using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry (260 nm and 280 nm). An increase in the absorbance value in the measured cell indicated an increase in the level of cell content produced by the cell. One-way analysis of variance was used statistically analyze the results of this study (P < 0.05). Results: Mobe leaf (A. lakoocha) extract’s minimum inhibitory concentration level was 3.125 mg/ml, the effective concentration of ethanol extract for inhibiting biofilm formation was 3.125 mg/ml, and the effective concentration of ethanol extract that could cause DNA and protein leakage was 50 mg/ml. Conclusions: Mobe leaf extract has good MIC for S. mutans.

Background: Class II discrepancies were primarily perceived as sagittal problems. Class II malocclusions usually cause aesthetic and functional problems, depending on the degree of anterior-posterior mismatch and interaction with adjacent soft tissues. Purpose: This case report aimed to evaluate the effect of modified sagittal guidance twin-block (SGTB) for Class II Skeletal and Dental Changes in a growing patient. Case: A 10-year-old patient presented with her parents and complained mainly of aesthetic problems. Diagnosis showed skeletal Class II pattern (ANB 6º) with retrognathic mandible, angle Class II molar relationship, convex facial profile, lower dental midline shift, crowding in the lower anterior teeth, and incompetent lips. Case Management: A growth modification treatment plan was considered for the patient, using modified SGTB. Both bonded and removable had the same design. In the SGTB, the bite block was angled at 70º, pushed toward the occlusal plane to maximize horizontal force toward the mandible. As a result, the mandible is guided forward and optimally positioned during occlusion. Conclusion: An ideal overjet and slight correction on lower anterior crowding teeth were achieved after full-time wear of a modified SGTB for 12 months. A modified SGTB appliance is effective in treating skeletal Class II with a retrognathic mandible.

Background: Endodontic mishaps, such as missed canal and broken file, are procedural accidents that can affect the prognosis of endodontic treatment. A missed canal can lead to endodontic failure because of bacterial remnants in the root canal. A broken file may cause obstruction of the canal, inhibiting the process of shaping and cleaning. An ultrasonic instrument can be used under a dental microscope to manage a missed canal or broken file fragment. Purpose: This study aimed to show the management of missed canal and instrument separation by endodontic retreatment using an ultrasonic instrument under dental microscope. Case: A 31-year-old female patient presented to Dental Hospital Universitas Gadjah Mada with discomfort from chewing her upper left molar since 2 weeks (January 4, 2022). The tooth was subjected to root canal treatment 2 years ago (November 18, 2019). The percussion test yielded a positive result. The examination of radiographs showed the presence of a broken file in the middle third of the mesiobuccal root canal. Case Management: The first stage of the retreatment was removal of the gutta-percha. This was followed by exploration of the missed canal and retrieval of the broken file using an ultrasonic instrument under a dental microscope. Then, the root canals, including the messiobuccal2 canal, that was missed at the previous treatment, were prepared. The final step was zirconia crown restoration with a fiber post. Conclusion: An ultrasonic device along with a dental microscope can be used to manage a missed canal and instrument separation conservatively.

Background: Human behavior can significantly alter dental conditions. One such behavior is the habit of chewing betel nuts. Known as nginang, this tradition holds social significance in many cultures across Indonesia. Societal beliefs include the idea that chewing betel nuts offers a sensation similar to smoking cigarettes, provides a pastime, reduces bad breath, and even enhances dental health. However, evidence shows that it can cause severe damage to teeth. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the literature regarding the impact of chewing betel nuts on dental conditions and to recommend actions to address the problems caused by it. Reviews: While this habit can have positive aspects, it may also cause tooth damage when practiced with a certain frequency and intensity and using specific compositions. Issues such as calculus, periodontitis, attrition, and antemortem tooth loss may occur due to this habit. However, inconsistencies have been found concerning this habit’s relation to caries. Conclusion: A pathological chain reaction triggered by betel nut chewing confirms its detrimental effect on dental health. Further investigations are required to explain the inconsistencies found in this review. The researchers recommend promoting tooth brushing to enable society to maintain its tradition without risking further teeth damage.
