First generation of biomarkers (fluorescence labels) is based on organic dyes. To replace them nanoparticles (NPs)/quantum dots (QDs) of highly fluorescent CdTe-, CdS- and CdSe-based biomarkers were introduced. Despite the fact that these NPs show some advantageous properties, their use is limited by blinking, spectral diffusion of emission and use of cadmium, which should be avoided in the case of biological and medical applications. This fact motivated us to develop new generation of biomarkers using biocompatible oxides - ZnO, ZnAl2O4 and ZrO2. Their emission is activated by doping with rare earth (RE) ions.

The fine powder of magnetite Fe3O4 was obtained by precipitation of aqueous solutions of chemically pure Mohr's salt Fe(NH4)2(SO4)2·6H2O and FeCl3 using concentrated NH4OH. The fine powders with the particle size from 5 to 25 nm were obtained. Some portions of powders were subjected to heat treatment in air at temperatures of 473, 573 and 673 K. This annealing leads to the formation of γ-Fe2O3. The parameters of hyperfine interactions for these ions in the crystal structure of Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3 by the nuclear gamma-resonance method (NGR) were obtained and difference in occupations of iron ions in octa- and tetra-sublattice compared to stoichiometric magnetite was revealed.

Luminescence and scintillation processes in nanomaterials can differ sufficiently from the same processes in bulk crystals. A range of effects providing such a difference (confinement of electronic and phonon states, Purcell's effect, migration of defects to the surface) are discussed in the paper.

The La1-xEuxVO4 powders were synthesized by co-precipitation method. Luminescence spectra of the investigated samples consist of wide non-structural bands of the matrix emission and narrow spectral lines caused by inner f-f electron transitions in the impurity Eu3+ ions. The both types of emission were studied within 10 - 300 K temperature range. Obtained dependencies are discussed using proposed models for matrix emission and structure of the nearest surrounding of the Eu3+ centers.

The results of a comparative study of amorphous (Na, CO3)- and (K, CO3)-containing apatites by TPM MS analysis, FTIR, XRD, SEM and EPR are presented. Annealing of amorphous apatite at temperatures below 400°C does not lead to changing of nanoparticle shape and size and an extent of its crystallinity. A significant difference in the formation of γ-induced defects in (Na, CO3)- and (K,CO3)-containing apatites was found.
