This study adopted an ecosystem services approach to pollution management by investigating the impact of biochar-mediated remediation on soil nitrogen, abundance of nitrogen cycling bacteria and the activity of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) enzyme in petroleum-polluted soil using two biochar types applied at two treatment levels with monitoring over 15 weeks. The corn cob-derived biochar (CDB), generally, had a stronger restorative effect on soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate and total organic nitrogen concentrations than the bone-derived biochar (BDB). Both biochar types had a more robust impact on restoration of Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and Azotobacter abundance (with the re-establishment of pre-pollution levels) than on Rhizobium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Biochar amendment restored the activity of AMO enzyme in the soil by week 15. The CDB (72.4% – 73.7%) showed more effective total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) elimination capacity than the BDB (51.1% – 57.7%). Biochar amendments exhibited great potential for restoration of nitrogen cycling while facilitating remediation of petroleum-polluted soils.

A liquid-liquid extraction technique and HPLC-DAD method using a C18 column, 5μm (150x4.6mm i.d.) were developed for a toxicological drug screening. A home-made “N-acetylparoxetine” is used as internal standard. A local UV spectra library of over 130 drugs and some of their metabolites was created. This library covers the main therapeutic classes involved in intoxication cases. The developed procedure is successfully applied to different biological samples (serum, urine, gastric fluid and post mortem whole blood) and allows rapid and simultaneous detection and identification of a large number of substances and their semi-quantification in serum.

The objective of our work is to study the influence of Rameal Chipped Wood (FCW) and cattle manure in the presence and absence of earthworms Octodrilus complanatus on the regulation of soil temperature of a sandy loam soil. The study station is located in a semi-arid zone (Constantine, Algeria). The results obtained show that the contribution of FCW cattle manure in the presence and absence of earthworms Octodrilus complanatus has a beneficial effect on soil temperature.

The objective of this study was to extract, characterize, and examine the antibacterial properties of orange essential oil obtained from citrus sinensis peels, using hydro-distillation method. Various components of the orange oil were characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis and GC- MS spectroscopic techniques. The extracted essential oil was conformed to AFNOR standards, and had a maximum yield of 3.4% (w/w). The obtained results showed that limonene was the major bioactive components of the orange essential oil (97.14%). The essential orange oil and its dilutions in DMSO showed an excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive bacteria) with a diameter of inhibition zone superior to 40 mm. However, it was ineffective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aerogenes (gram negative bacteria).

Many electromechanical devices operation is dependent on timing concept. Different constituent parts are programmed to function on timestamp. In many home and industrial applications, timer switches form one of the major components. It is usually used for the operation of such devices. In this work, a simple but robust general-purpose universal programmable digital timer (UPDT) is proposed. The UPDT switch is a software-based timer with an interface that can be connected to a variety of devices to act as a switch for their operations. It is designed to perform a cyclic operation up to 100 times with a maximum switching time of 100 hours. The module presented in this work is capable of being used for the operation of a variety of devices such as utility load shedding device, water pump control, automatic poultry feed dispenser, automatic lawn watering system, among others.

This study was conducted to assess food safety knowledge, attitudes and practices among restaurant food handlers in North Lebanon and to determine what impact the food safety intervention had on the performance of workers. A structured questionnaire of 35 questions has been used to collect information on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices for 110 food handlers randomly working in 38 food service establishments via face-to-face questioning interviews during three months. The intervention was made to a subgroup of 13 participants followed by a reassessment. The average percentage scores of all food handlers for knowledge, attitudes, and practices were 63.78%, 83.63% and 81%, respectively. For the 13 participants who received the intervention, a significant improvement was observed in their performance after the training (p ˂ 0.001).

The antioxidant activity of 3-nitrophenylferrocene (3NPF) and 3,3'-nitrophenylferrocene (3,3'NPF) and their reduced amines was measured using superoxide anion radical (). Binding parameters such as binding free energies and binding constants were also calculated. sign and values suggest respectively the spontaneity and a strong interaction between the radical and all studied compounds. Molecular docking study showed that 3NPF is most inreactive compound against glutathione reductase enzyme having the the lowest docking scores of -16.96 kJ/mol. The two reduced forms were predected to be non-toxic and are not inhibitors of CYP450 2C19, 2D6 isoenzymes which suggests a decrease in their plasma concentrations and a rapid elimination route.

The general objective of this research is to study the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of the water supply sources in the Municipality of Natitingou. The methodological approach adopted revolves around the collection of data on sources of drinking water supply, water sampling, socio-anthropogenic data. The analysis of the results shows that water resources are not very diversified and are limited to rainwater and groundwater. The factors that explain the bacteriological pollution of these waters are linked to the conditions of transport and storage of water, the environment, the almost total absence of a wastewater management system and the behavior of the population. Chemical pollution is due to chemicals used in socio-economic activities and released into nature.

Marine sponges are oldest metazoans which were found to have structural and biologically diverse lectins. A lectin isolated from marine sponge Axinella donnani (ADL) were evaluated for its stability against denaturing agents such as Urea, Thiourea and Guanidine hydrochloride. Urea and Thiourea decreases the stability of ADL in higher concentration (5 mM) while Guanidine hydrochloride does not show any activity. Finally, cyt otoxicity of ADL at different concentrations (0.25 500 mg/mL) was tested against MCF 7, A431 and HeLa cell lines by MTT assay. ADL exhibited potential cytotoxicity against these cell lines after 24 hours in a dose dependent manner. Thus, ADL could be a pot ent cytotoxic agent in clinical applications.

This paper presents a comparative based analysis on the mechanical behavior of three different forms of volute of volute of a centrifugal pump with a spline, a radial and a tangential type using ABAQUS Software calculation code. The result of the analysis shows that the stress concentration is localized at the volute nozzle for all the three types of forms. This founding is an interesting element as regards to the possibilities of adaptation of a pump to a particular operation. Also it is found that the tangential volute is the least stressed compared to the other two forms. The displacements are more pronounced in the case of a radial volute. These data can be exploited in order to predict the possibility of accidental rupture of this element. From another point of view this can have an indirect influence on the appearance of vibration, noise and fluctuations of pressures and speeds due to the interaction between the fixed part (volute) and the mobile part (impeller).
