Perceived 3DTV viewing in the public: insights from a three-day field evaluation study 公众对3d电视观看的感知:来自为期三天的实地评估研究的见解

The adoption and deployment of 3DTV can be seen as a major step in the television history, similar to transitions from black and white to color, analogue to digital and standard to high definition TV. Although 3D is expected to emerge from the cinema to peoples' home, there is still a lack of knowledge on how people (future end users) perceive 3DTV and how this influences their viewing experience as well as their acceptance of 3DTV. Within this paper, findings from a three-day field evaluation study on peoples' 3DTV experiences, focusing on the feeling of sickness and presence, are presented. The study was conducted in a public setting of a shopping center, involving 700 participants. The study revealed insights on users' feeling of presence and sickness when watching 3D. Results show that most of the participants reported sickness symptoms after watching 3DTV with an effect of gender and age on the reported feeling of sickness. Our results further suggest that the users' previous experience with 3D has an influence on how realistic people rate the viewing experience and how involved they feel.

The Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) switchover may leverage the implementation of a variety of features and services that will allow users to take on an interactive role. However, among the future clients of DTT are a significant number of elderly and visually impaired people who can not entirely benefit from the TV content or possible interactive services. In this way, and considering that interactive television (iTV) services can contribute towards improving life quality of this type of users, it is important to apply accessibility, usability and design-oriented guidelines for the development of accessible iTV systems. In this context, this paper introduces a research related to universal design issues on the iTV scope. Beginning with the identification of the difficulties and needs of visually impaired users as consumers of television contents, this research aims to propose a set of requirements to develop an interactive audio description service that meets the needs of visually impaired users, following a universal design approach.

Stereoscopic 3-D TV webcast 立体3d电视网络广播

With limited RF bandwidth, terrestrial stations are constrained by the current state of consumer TV receivers in the home to manage the high computation and bandwidth demands for 3DTV. This paper presents an experiment of delivering stereoscopic 3DTV on-demand content over HTTP network. Our approach makes use of the newest adaptive streaming mechanism for webcasting 3D to individual TV users. The goal was to explore whether HTTP network can or does transport HD quality stereoscopic 3DTV using a desktop computer for 3D decoding and how far it is from the reality. Ultimately, we seek to conclude and to present the problems we met and potential research on webcasting of advanced multi-view 3DTV.

Experience as a starting point of designing transmedia content 体验作为设计跨媒体内容的起点

This is a description of a transmedia music format development project, named TMS and one research study conducted in order to guide the format developers in the early stages of developing the transmedia idea. Our work integrates user experience research with content development in an iterative design process. Ideas and iterations of content are tested on the target audience in order to feed back to the development process. The empirical study presented in this paper targets general dimensions of great music experiences. We will discuss the implications of the results in the context of format development.

Jumping between devices and services: towards an integrated concept for social tv 在设备和服务之间跳跃:迈向社交电视的整合概念

Television and video belong to the most important media in domestic environments. Nowadays, television means more than the classic reception at the TV set, it also provides new manifold opportunities for on-demand media consumption. The technical infrastructure grows extremely fast whereby an increasing number of options of how to use rich media are being offered. Functionalities from the Internet, such as e.g. communication, sharing and other information services enrich the TV experience. The convergence of media is not only visible in broader functional sets at one device, e.g. broadcast and online access at Media Center systems, but is also reflected in the interconnectedness of the device itself. In order to understand the design dimensions for further SocialTV applications, we conducted different kinds of empirical work including a diary study, interviews and creative workshops. Results indicate that several forms of parallel and convergent media usage have already been established. We identified flexible changes between devices and services related to TV and video content (cross-media jumps). We also discussed several mockups for integrated, cross-platform Social TV applications. It turned out that the identified needs relate to both a better interconnection between devices and services.

The purpose of this study was to elaborate and analyze the existing linkage between TV and Web content. We focused on mainstream TV broadcasters in Austria and Finland and chose 10 Austrian and 10 Finnish TV program formats that feature convergence with the Web. We conducted a multidisciplinary platform analysis based on a catalog of criteria established in previous studies that researched (non-) linear TV content in conjunction with the Web. In the second step, we summarized the outcome of the analysis by defining classes from the most frequently observed combination of criteria, which serve as a basis for the concluding discussion. Finally we present ideas and assumptions for a future scenario. Our study identifies that there is minimal linkage between TV and Web content in both countries and its potential is not well recognized in the market place. The reasons are multiple and range from the lack of standards and mechanisms for implementing linkage to inadequate interfaces and input devices. Hence, linear TV content, which limits Web content to coexisting Web pages, prevails.

We tackle the issue of innovation policy in the specific context of a small media sector, i.e. the Flemish one. The research question is twofold; firstly, asking which types of innovation should be supported by government; secondly, asking how to organise innovation policy in the broadcasting (and by extension media) sector. This study is based on a literature study, document analysis and several stakeholder interviews.

The development of an interactive Internet-based TV system designed to cover the broadcasting needs for new media artwork introduces various complexities across the organisation, production and interaction forefronts, as live interactive installation art and multi-sourced multimedia content poses particular presentation requirements. Our work presents and discusses real-life strategies and solutions employed during the development of iMediaTV, an open-source academic broadcasting system that permits various presentation modes to be employed, extending the presentation needs for artistic and non-uniform content. An extensible architecture for DTV middleware 用于数字电视中间件的可扩展体系结构

The currently adopted specifications for Digital Television (DTV) middleware do not define the internal characteristics of their architecture. As a result, the existing middleware implementations are not as flexible, extensible and adaptable as they should be due to the adoption of a closely-coupled architecture. This paper proposes a modular architecture for DTV middleware, which allows easy extension and updating, providing a simple way to add new features to the middleware. This architecture is based on the OSGi framework and its software components, called bundles. A categorization of these bundles was proposed, based on different usage scenarios that were identified, according to industry time-to-market and innovation needs. Prototypes of the architecture and of bundles have been implemented, and tests performed with these prototypes show the feasibility of this approach.
