Curle was the founding Professor of the Department of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford in the UK. Appointed to the Chair in 1973, the department launched its teaching and research programmes in 1974. Curle's influence on the department and his development of a theory and practice of peace and peacemaking is traced and analysed in this article. His theory of peace was based on a synthesis of academic perspectives drawing on psychology, anthropology and development theory, and on the early peace theory of other innovators in the field of peace studies, including Johan Galtung and Kenneth Boulding. His peace practice was based on the experience of large scale conflict in the Nigerian Civil War and the India Pakistan conflict in the 1960s and 1970s, and was distinguished by his use of non-official or track two mediation as a complement to formal diplomacy in such conflicts. His use of mediation was modified later when, in the 1990s, in the context of the civil war in the Balkans, he helped to mobilise support for local people who wished to resist the civil war and to build peaceful communities and cultures of peace. In this way he also pioneered the idea of peace building from below, currently recognised as a leading mode of peacemaking amongst academics and practitioners.

This article is about how to apply narrative practices as tools for mediation in organizations. It offers a range of theoretical reflections that guide the use of narrative practices in this context and illustrates these points by analyzing an organization in conflict and a subsequent narrative mediation process. In particular, the paper discusses the implications of transferring narrative practices from a context of two-party mediation to an organizational context.

The conflict in mobbing. Triggers and resolution
Pub Date : 2010-06-07 DOI: 10.7238/joc.v0i1.928
M. Parés
The purpose of this article is to contribute to the knowledge of conflict within the phenomenon of moral harassment at work, with the aim to promote the elimination of the exercise of these violent practices within organizations. In this article, apart from paying special attention to the definition of this phenomenon, we are interested in knowing the conditions that foster the emergence of this conflict, and we bring new contributions. We analyze the conflict phase of the mobbing process at work, since we understand that the resolution will be determined by the moment in which it will be tackled. We reflect on the conditions that make it happen within companies and, finally, we state what we consider to be contributions and challenges for the studies to come about this conflict called “mobbing”.

Environmental peace (Gaia peace): Premises to develop a model
Pub Date : 2010-06-05 DOI: 10.7238/JOC.V0I1.929
Robert F. Beltran
In Latin America, environmental conflicts have their very own nature, characteristics and dynamics, hence the reason why we need to develop management processes and resolutions that are set within a framework of peace, i.e., a 'social peace' (Gaia). This, in turn, enables the right elements of justice to be put into place. The peace process is, as a result of this action, both solid and long-lasting. Conversely, we have seen how many environmental conflict resolutions have failed in their final objective in the past, i.e., in not achieving peace. A peacebuilding model for the environment (Gaia) should therefore contain elements of foundational support and action in environmental conflict resolution processes, so that they become sustainable over time, benefit all the parties involved, and provide access to natural resources in a sustainable manner.

This article looks at the links between historical memory and peacebuilding in the present and the future. In accordance with the spirit and contents of the Letter for Peace to the United Nations, the authors of the article defend the need to overcome resentment deriving from past conflicts to build a more peaceful world. They identify a number of serious obstacles and argue for the need to disarm history and pass it on with the maximum level of objectivity to the generations to come.

Mediation: Roots in the past with projection in the future

A. Vall
When talking about mediation and other methods of conflict resolution based on peaceful, constructive and cooperative management of disagreement, we would seem to be talking about new systems for conflict management. Looking back at our history shows us how this is not the case however. Despite innovation in its theorisation and more professional application over the last thirty years, there is an underlying philosophy in these systems that could well be as old as human beings’ ability to reason. Thus, mediation, whether carried out by professionals or informally by friends and relatives, is no new discovery, but rather the fortunate recovery of techniques based on ancestral principles rooted in people’s ability to understand and dialogue.

Civilian Movement for Ministries or Departments of Peace in the World

On the 13th of May, 2008, Mr. Federico Mayor Zaragoza1 publishes an article in one of the mainstream newspapers of Spain: La Vanguardia, titled “Ministries for Peace”. In it he says: “With the new millennium the force of reason is expanding in a way that seems unstoppable in these next years, the conscience of the citizens' power, that pacifically, but firmly, will give in to submission towards the arbitrary designs of power. The force of reason against the reason of force, guided by the great universal values and not by the law of market, to return to humanity the reins of its destiny. It is this new citizenship that is capable of moving, with firmness but without violence, towards a Culture of Peace…” What has this 'global citizenship' been doing, apart from the civilian movements for Peace, to spur the political institutions towards a Culture of Peace? This article examines what has been done up to now by citizens around the world that have started a global movement called the GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR MINISTRIES AND DEPARTMENTS OF PEACE and examines what is meant by Culture of Peace.
