Studies on the intercaruncular regions of uterus were carried out on 34 ewes on Days 1-78 of the post-partum period to determine the approximate date of ending post-partum changes and the appearance of morphological sings interrelated with the ovarian cycle phases. It was demonstrated that in sheep the remodelling of endometrium relief lasted until Day 12 of post-partum (p.p.) and at the same time destruction changes in the superficial and glandular epithelium, as well as in the uterine stroma ended. At first, changes in the myometrium (around Day 6--in the longitudinal layer and on Day 10--in the circular layer) were finished. After Day 12 p.p. there was a number of morphological signs indicating the relationship between the ovarian cycle phase and changes in the endometrium of intercaruncular regions of the uterus. At the same time, the role of stromal leucocytes and certain hormones in processes of the involution of uterus was discussed.

The influence of Ambroxol on the Fe3+ (ADP) dihydroxyfumarate-induced peroxidation of mitochondrial lipids in dog lung was investigated. It was shown that changes in mitochondrial lipid composition include great decrease in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine content, with concomitant increase in lysophosphoglyceride content. Addition of Ambroxol (5 mM and 10 mM) to the incubation medium decreases these changes in dose-dependent manner. The malondialdehyde production was greatly reduced in the presence of Ambroxol. The mode of Ambroxol action was comparable to that of other free radical scavengers.

The influence of intratracheally instilled bleomycin (10 mg x kg-1) on antioxidant enzyme activity as well as on lipid peroxidation product levels after 7 and 14 days from drug administration in rat lungs was investigated. The 200-400% increase in superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, catalase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities were observed, as compared to control group. The levels of malondialdehyde, conjugated dienes and lipid hydroperoxides in lung tissue of bleomycin-treated rats were also higher than those in control group. These phenomena are the signs of adaptative mechanisms induction in lungs, protecting the tissue from dangerous effect of bleomycin-generated free radicals.

Lung surfactant from bronchoalveolar lavage and post-lavaged lung tissue of calf and adult cows was isolated. In both species of the surfactant, the main fractions are: phospholipids and free fatty acids. Phosphatidylcholine was the main phospholipid fraction. Phosphatidylglycerol level is about 4% of total phospholipids. In both phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol fractions, palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids are the main fatty acids. There are no differences between bronchoalveolar lavage and post-lavaged lung tissue surfactants and between calf and adult cow surfactants in the aspect of their lipid composition.

After HCl administration to 3-21 day old crossbred piglets (wbp x pbz x złotnicka biała) the total acidity and output of acidity, the activity of pepsin, alpha-amylase and lipase were measured in the stomach content. The activity of pepsinogen was estimated in piglet's serum. The results do not indicate the significant influence of HCl on the acidity and the activity of enzymes in the stomach content.

Micrococcal nuclease digestion technique in combination with spot-blotting hybridization have been used for the characterization of latent Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) DNA in mouse brainstems. Two kinds of samples were used i.e. undigested DNA from mouse brainstems and DNA after prolonged digestion (i.e. for 30 minutes) with micrococcal nuclease from the same source. Each sample contained 5 micrograms of DNA (concentration was measured after digestion with micrococcal nuclease and isolation of DNA). Two kinds of probes were used: -virus specific probe, -host cellular probe. In the performed experiments, we observed the increased susceptibility of latent HSV-1 DNA for micrococcal nuclease digestion, comparing it to host DNA, which may reflect differences in protection of latent viral DNA by nuclear proteins and also may be associated with existing limited transcription of HSV-1 genome during latency.

Four horses manifesting locomotor incoordination were used in the research. Precise localization of the compression of cervical spinal cord due to malforming lesions or instability of the vertebral column was determined by means of radiography and myelography. The results, particularly those obtained by means of myelography, appeared to be of decisive diagnostic importance to planned surgical operation to remove the compression of the spinal cord.

In this paper the level of Na, K and Cl was determined on 108 kidney slices obtained from 12 kidney, removed from 6 clinical healthy piglets. The animals were 4 weeks old. The kidney tissue prepared by method as described by Appelboom et al. (1958). The electrolyte concentration in the cortex, outer medulla and inner medulla was calculated per 1 kg wet and dry tissue. There is a distinct (significant differences) electrolyte gradient in the piglet kidney tissue (the maximum electrolyte concentration in the papilla area). Low Na content even in inner medulla, indicates little capacity for urine concentration in the 4 week old piglets. Individual differences of the electrolyte content in kidney tissue, may indicate different rate of functional development of piglets kidney. No significant difference between left and right kidney was stated in the electrolytes concentration.

The aim of our work was to establish the influence of the HgCl2 poisoning (various doses) on the Fe distribution in the rat organism. 175 Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: I--control group, II--intoxicated with HgCl2 in the dose of 1 mg/kg of body weight, in the III group the HgCl2 dose was 6 mg/kg, in the IV group--12 mg/kg, in the V--12 mg/kg but rats of this group were given afterwards BAL (2.3-dimercaptopropanol). All rats were given 0.2 ml of 59FeCl3, radioactivity 3.7 kBq. The animals were put to sleep with chloroform after 3 and 6 hours, and 1, 2, 4, 8, 14 days after the isotope administration. For the radiometric assays the following organs or tissues were taken: stomach, small and large intestine, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, muscles, spleen, blood, brain, testicles. The results are given in the percent of Fe dose in 1 g of wet tissue. The statistical analysis (Students' t test) was performed. The results indicate that in poisoned animals the Fe distribution was different than in controls. Increased concentration of 59Fe was noted after 3 and 6 hours in stomach and after 1 day in large intestine, whereas in other organs the Fe concentration was lower, correlating usually with the Hg dose. One interesting thing was noted: the Fe concentration in almost all organs was higher in rats intoxicated with the 12 mg/kg dose of HgCl2 and given afterwards BAL (IV group), than in rats that were not given BAL. Present results can have some practical significance in therapeutic procedure in mercury poisoning and during the convalescence.
