In this paper we present a novel architecture for enabling on-line communication with marine environment monitoring deployments. We rely on a set of communication technologies that range from IoT related low data rate communication standards to the widely adopted Wi-Fi and LTE protocols that are able to support bandwidth demanding applications. To achieve energy-efficient results we turn off all the power-hungry interfaces and peripherals, while maintaining a low-power interface active, dedicated to control the rest of the components. Finally, we present the installation of the developed system in the Vida oceanographic buoy, in Slovenia and evaluate our device in terms of power consumption.

Intelligent radio resource distribution techniques play an important role in improving the overall performance of next-generation networks. An efficient scheduling algorithm can help to achieve higher data rates, lower latency and increased fairness for users. This paper evaluates the performance of an indoor network, simulated using the Realistic Indoor Environment Generator (RIEG), when 11 different Throughput Averaging Methods (TAMs) for the Proportional Fair (PF) algorithm are used. The TAMs are compared by using a Comparative Factor (CF) that simultaneously takes into account the average throughput of the indoors users, the fairness and the outage ratio. Simulation results show that when improvement in fairness is the main goal, the recently-proposed low-complexity Median Method (MM) and Quartile Mean Method (QMM) are major rivals to the widely-used Arithmetic Mean Method (AMM) and Original Mean Method (OMM), while the Modified Quartile Mean Method (MQMM) is the leader when the average throughput of indoor users is the most important factor.

This paper presents theoretical foundations of the linear fuzzy space, which allows for a simple but yet efficient modelling and representation of imprecise data. We also present applications of this theory to diversiform problems that call for imprecise data manipulation. The presented applications pertain to geo-spatial problems, medical imaging/diagnostics, and social networks analysis.

A new technique for calculating the radiation patterns of linear equally spaced phased array antennas consisting of highly directional antenna elements with an increased interelement spacing is considered. The concept of point interpretation of the elements of a set of highly directional antennas turns out to be untenable, since the phase characteristic of each element in the far zone can be considered quasi-constant only in the angular limits of the width of the radiation pattern of the element.

Advances in sensor technologies, mobile positioning, IoT and wireless communications have led to development of applications for data collection, processing, analysis, mining and visualization for the purposes of real time responses and decision support, but have also brought new challenges to processing large amount of data in a real time. Various software systems are developed to provide a set of methods, technologies, algorithms and index structures for effective monitoring, processing, analysis and mining of continuous flow of data and events. This paper reviews recent developments in the field of data streams processing and analysis, gives an overview of existing systems and technologies, and demonstrates development of a stream processing application based on the contemporary stream processing frameworks.

As DDOS attacks interrupt internet services, DDOS tools confirm the effectiveness of the current attack. DDOS attack and countermeasures continue to increase in number and complexity. In this paper, we explore the scope of the DDoS flooding attack problem and attempts to combat it. A contemporary escalation of application layer distributed denial of service attacks on the web services has quickly transferred the focus of the research community from conventional network based denial of service. As a result, new genres of attacks were explored like HTTP GET Flood, HTTP POST Flood, Slowloris, R-U-Dead-Yet (RUDY), DNS etc. Also after a brief introduction to DDOS attacks, we discuss the characteristics of newly proposed application layer distributed denial of service attacks and embellish their impact on modern web services.

The article describes improvements in new video compression algorithm H.265/HEVC over predecessors. The efficiency of the algorithm has been verified on a test video file in multiple standard resolutions. The evaluation results indicate that the algorithm satisfies the goal of increasing the coding efficiency for high-resolution video sequences by 50% over previous algorithms.

This paper aims to assess the possibility to implement low power, short distance standard communications technologies and cheaper technology for dedicated applications, such as data dynamic data collection, data distribution, or messaging, for better information of vehicles (and, in general, traffic participants). The main concern was to determine the already existing communications that are most probable to be found in the field. As Wi-Fi is the most used communication inside the buildings, but is also likely to be found in vehicles (for communication between their equipment of just used by mobile devices inside of them) the authors have considered that this should be the first step in determining characteristics of the wireless communication environment near the road network. Therefore, specific measurements regarding communications interferences and Wi-Fi channel density have been performed in some representative road junctions in Bucharest and along the most crowded public transport routes (buses and trams), with the results being useful in choosing proper ways for employing new communications with little chance of interferences.

We analyse the results of a comprehensive collection of objective quality metrics for high definition compressed visual content. The investigation provides guidelines that allow a reliable JPEG image quality assessment, and therefore the development of perceptual-based image/video coding standards. We show on a comprehensive, recent subjective dataset with visible differences that visual information fidelity, most apparent distortion, and gradient-based objective measures have reached the best agreement with the subjective quality scores, where contrast is preferred according to the luminance and structure changes.

This study focuses on temperature dependent characterization of a 0.25×1500 μm2 GaN HEMT. The impact of the ambient temperature on the microwave performance is reported and discussed. It is achieved that the reduction of the average electron velocity with increasing temperature leads to a remarkably degradation of the main figures of merit.
