Camminare come progetto: coreografie di paesaggio attraverso ferrovie dismesse

Giacomo Dallatorre
Observing the evolution of the railway network, in Italy, the presence of eight thousand abandoned kilometers undermines the ways of crossing and the forms of perception that have consolidated over time around a track. Overcoming the opposition between the speed of the train and the slower one of man – and capturing the intuition of Dixon Hunt in the essay Lordship of the feet – walking is a practice to experiment different ways of experiencing an open space as a railway route. The essay interprets the footprints left by six landscape architects, exploring a track with the perception of their own body to suggest more than one movement in the next drawing, as an opportunity to reflect on the role that can be attributed to the path. Encountering the contemporary culture of the landscape project, through an interview with the subjects involved, the journey allows us to begin dialoguing with a local railway heritage, overcoming the perspective of a mono-functional use or reuse, to follow the trajectory of a recovery project as choreography of the crossed landscape.

The essay deals with an investigation into the narrative capacity of the landscape as a palimpsest experienced through movement and gaze. The opportunity to reflect on the cognitive potential of ‘traveling’ and ‘staying’, of a geography capable of making the authentic relationships between the form of the soil and the anthropic form eloquent, is offered by reading the project by Dimitris Pikionis in Athens (1954-1958) to respond to building pressure that risked compromising the in- tegrity of the areas around the Acropolis. It is the essay Aesthetic Topography (1935) that outlines the theoretical framework that guides Pikionis’ work in these places, suggesting to contemporary architectural culture, a wealth of experiences useful for regaining an embodied knowledge, a les- son on how to educate the gaze to interrogate sensitive reality.

Soaking in the thermal landscapes: a slow tour across the Italian inner territories

Margherita Pasquali, Chiara Chioni, Sara Favargiotti
Crossing the Italian inner territories offers the opportunity to describe no longer their marginali- ty, but to narrate their human and natural resources and, among many, the water: this journey through the Italian thermal landscapes aims to unveil how the landscape is a collective good to be protected, but also a unique opportunity for territorial regeneration. The discovery of the curative properties of some waters – which derive from their deep flow through mineral layers – is intercrossed by history and myth, but their rediscovery is nowadays more relevant than ever for a slow, experiential, sustainable, and inclusive fruition. In the disconnected system of inner rural and mountain territories, the thermal baths can be an opportunity to rediscover and reconnect with nature and wellbeing: they can be places to stay, to be reached for the physical and spiritual rehabilitation, to experience landscapes where to immerse, remain and return.

Camminare in città. Note per il progetto del marciapiede

Chiara Merlini
In contemporary society, the practice of walking has taken a central role and importance, that can be found in many aspects, from the success of slow tourism to the demand for alternative mobility to the car. The three main values behind this success are sustainability, health, and slowness. Against the background outlined by these terms, the text reflects on some recurring ways of the design for walking space in the city. Some limits are highlighted, attributable both to the prev-alence of performance logics, and decorative attitudes. A precise observation of the sidewalks and their practices of use, also in relation to new and specific needs (for example related to the pandemic, or the aging population), it can reassign the necessary relevance to the project of the space on which we walk.

Pub Date : 2022-07-01 DOI: 10.36253/rv-12491
Fabio Manfredi
Walking is a purely practical act, an ecological mode of locomotion, it is a way to read and experience the landscape in its spatial and temporal dimensions, one of the simplest and most natural forms to measure our position in it. Walking is a way in which we attribute meanings to our surroundings and it is for this reason that the theme is a sort of common ground of study for geographers, anthropologists, artists, landscape architects. In the dichotomies walk-move, plan-error, logistics-improvisation lies our predisposition to listen to a place. In the gap between a point A and a point B of a movement, lies our ability to make an experience and transform the movement into a useful and founding act for the landscape; the time between A and B is that necessary to build an imaginary of the latter.

The close relationship that binds space and movement is such that one can be considered the generator of the other and viceversa. Movement is an act of reading-(re)writing of the landscape and the landscape project as a slow mobility project establishes guidelines for the exploration and knowledge of the territory, defining more or less implicit interpretations. Methods and times of travel with the frequency of the stops produce a narrative that involves the community. The case presented, the project of conversion of a former railway line in the urban area of Palermo into greenway, shows how a design intervention can affect the way in which space is appropriated and, at the same time, how the practice of walking and crossing implies giving up the functional monosemic claim that can be often found in architectural projects.

Camminare per significare. Riflessioni progettuali sugli incontri nello spazio
Pub Date : 2022-07-01 DOI: 10.36253/rv-12527
Roberto Germanò
Walking is a crucial aspect. It is a cognitive act acquired exclusively through direct experience. The movement of the subject across space deeply affects the project. What role can the act of walking play in the construction of a meaning? This question seeks answers in a central case study: the Filopappo’s route, designed by Pikionis, with a close reading of the path made up of encounters and pauses. Starting from observations on spatial sequences, the essay focuses on each step of the design process in which architectural elements shape the time of the experience and provide purpose: suggesting possibilities, inviting to rest or contemplate. Offering not only a formal structure but also a spatial punctuation provided by breaking points. Overcoming the simple geometric aspect, we analyze the perceptive aspects of the environment that predispose the subject and tune it with the atmosphere of the space.

Camminare nel paesaggio: un atto rivoluzionario
Pub Date : 2022-07-01 DOI: 10.36253/rv-12518
Paola Sabbion
Moving through the landscape with awareness has always been a revolutionary act for humanity, involving a renewed consciousness of our place in space and time. It is no coincidence that a walk is placed at the origin of the modern concept of landscape, and then continues, through some fundamental moments, to characterize a way of relating to the surrounding environment through movement. If in various eras walking has represented a form of aesthetic research, even a desecrating model of rebellion against the status quo, it still remains a fundamental form of primary knowledge, essential for the understanding of everyday landscapes, explored through bodily and related practices to a more inclusive modality involving different actors, who shape and interpret contemporary landscapes.

Walking and Staying in the Landscape
Pub Date : 2022-07-01 DOI: 10.36253/rv-13293
D. Palazzo, Valerio Morabito
This issue of Ri-Vista was developed as an exploration of a dichotomy and its meanings in the current landscape design scholarship and production. Walking and staying are two subjects often considered separately, while rarely studied in association. The goal of this issue is, in fact, to answer some questions: how landscape architects, planners, and educators are looking at walking and staying in the landscape? What is the state of the art of these disciplines with regard to these two actions?  What are the examples, theories, and concepts that take into consideration these ordinary human activities? Along these lines the issue - articulated in four main parts: Concepts, Ways, Reading, and Design, and two Reflections, offered by John Dixon Hunt and Frederick Steiner — aims to establish tracks and points of view on how landscape design and designers have found forms and ways to enhance the value of landscapes, crossing or stopping in them.

The walk is an effective device for understanding the evolution of the modern relationship between man and nature. The “Walking”, or rather climb along the alpine paths, tells of man’s need for space-time exploration of the surrounding reality. From Petrarca to Josias Simler and Albrecht von Haller, this dimension has been rendered with ever greater scientific attention. In the hallerian model of Brun’s paradise, and even more in the steps taken by Goethe along his travels, are insinuated the conditions for the development of an aesthetic approach to the mountain landscape, often described as a fraught reality, wrapped in a veil of inscrutability, within which the poet-traveler moves. It is precisely from these romantic impulses that American Nature Writing developed an innovative approach in the second half of the nineteenth century, aimed at capturing Nature in its essence. A pre-ecological reading that, with John Muir, will lead to the first actions to protect the landscape.
