Research to date in Western Europe and America has f a i l e d to pro ­ v id e any ev id e n c e th a t human exposure to p r e s ­ en t l e v e l s o f f i e l d s from h igh v o l t a g e o v e r ­ head power l i n e s , as norm ally en cou n tered , has any harmful b i o l o g i c a l e f f e c t . On th e o th er hand, s t u d i e s performed in th e USSR r e p o r t some u n d e s ir a b le e f f e c t s on w o r k e r s -n o t in th e t y p i c a l power l i n e env iron m en t--b u t in th e more complex environments found in h igh v o l t ­ age s w i t c h y a r d s . The d i s p a r i t y in r e s u l t s cou ld be a t t r i ­ buted to d i f f e r e n c e s between th e environments found in h ig h v o l t a g e l i n e s and s w i tc h y a r d s . S p e c ia l measurements conducted o f the lowfrequency a c o u s t i c a l n o i s e in a h ig h v o l t a g e sw itch yard d i s c l o s e d a h ig h l e v e l (104 dB) o f 120 Hertz sound. This h ig h i n t e n s i t y , 100 or 120 Hertz sound, found in sw itch yard s (but n ot near t r a n s m is s io n l i n e s ) cou ld produce symp­ toms s im i la r to th o s e rep o r te d fo r S o v ie t sw itch yard w orkers. Advanced composites technology has progressed rapidly in the past decade. Design studies and' hardware development activities on existing aircraft have confirmed that significant cost savings, weight savings, and consequent performance increases can result from modi­ fying metal structural designs by the inclusion o f composite structure designs, utilizing boron-filament, graphite-fiber, and glass-reinforced epoxies. The shielding effectiveness of composite panels is examined for a plane wave source representative of an electromagnetic (EM) interference threat for the frequency range of 50 kHz to 18 GHz. The effects of fabrication details are demonstrated by test data from three structures which used different panel thicknesses and methods of panel attachment. An assessment of the inherent shielding of composite material is made by analysis and from the results of tests on specimens subjected to a TEM wave in a coaxial line. Results show that while the shielding provided by composite materials is much less than for metal, it is large enough that in most cases the leakage through joints or seams will be the limiting factor in the shielding effectiveness of structures. equal unless the wave impedance (E to H ratio) is a constant value (independent of position) on both sides of the shield. This emphasizes the fact that measured values for shielding effectiveness are not unique to the material being tested but depend upon the test configuration and procedures employed.

The corridor concept entails the grouping of power, communications, pipelines, railroads, and highways in one overall right-of-way in order to minimize land usage. This grouping of utilities, while advantageous from a land usage point of view, raises strong technical problems of interference between the utilities. Certainly, the need for any utility corridor concept must assess issues such as land use, environmental, social, economic, aesthetic and legal factors. The technical feasibility aspect, however, must focus on the interaction between the various using utilities and try to determine certain minimum widths for a utility corridor within which these utilities can compatibly operate. In such an evaluation, the effects of various corridor widths have to be analyzed in relation to protective measures and added costs.

This grouping of utilities, while advantageous from a land usage point of view, raises strong technical problems of interference between the utilities. Certainly, the need for any utility corridor concept must assess issues such as land use, environmental, social, economic, aesthetic and legal factors. The technical feasibility aspect, however, must focus on the interaction between the various using utilities and try to determine certain minimum widths for a utility corridor within which these utilities can compatibly operate. Abstract Aspects of VLF Shielding Design and Fabrication VLF屏蔽设计与制作的几个方面

Summary form only given. VLF Shielding, below 10 KHz and down to 20-30 Hz, requires design considerations and unique fabrication and installation techniques. The lower the frequency of concern, the more critical the choice of materials and the fabrication and installation of these materials in the high performance VLF shielded room. Since the greatest design and fabrication is with respect to the magnetic component in VLF shielding, this presentation will cover elementary design and performance information with respect to the absorptive losses in both far field and induced near field conditions. All-important in design and fabrication considerations is the reluctance of joints, door seams and other penetrations. Also unique is the honeycomb type of air vents when used as a shield in induced magnetic fields. Power line filters present challenging problems when the frequency of shielding is in the pass band of these filters. VLF shielding and information on the above will be covered with equal attention to the design, selection of materials and fabrication. Illustrations will be given for typical applications for Tempest and EMP requirements.
