Abstract Dictionaries are only marginally involved in the formation of ideologies. However, they reflect the values that are typical of individual epochs, and help to consolidate and spread ideological concepts. The analysis of dictionaries therefore has considerable heuristic potential for illustrating different forms of ideologies in their linguistic expression. The present paper exemplarily sheds light on the relationship of ideology and lexicography from a German and Romance point of view. It starts with 17th-century academy dictionaries, which mirror the elitist social realities of the time, and goes on with reflections on taboo vocabulary, feminine job titles and the lexical influence of English on French.

Abstract This article is intended as the first of a series of papers designing an electronic linguistic resource made up of three modules: (1) a phrase-based active dictionary thought of as a first attempt to implement John Sinclair’s vision of the “ultimate dictionary”; (2) a grammar / construction describing not only the morphologic and syntactic rules of a language but also its systematic (semantic) alternations and the derivations generating new meaningful constructions from old ones; (3) a phrase thesaurus / phraseological conceptual ontology taking WordNet into the modern “age of phraseology”. After introducing the theoretical framework of our project, we present the microstructure of our Phrase-based Active Dictionary (PAD) model and describe it in a general theory of lexicography.

Abstract The purpose of the present paper is to explore the role of John Pickering’s Vocabulary or Collection of Words and Phrases Which Have Been Supposed to Be Peculiar to the United States of America (1816) as one of the major sources of the Dictionary of American English (DAE) by William Craigie and James Hulbert (1936–1944).
