Abstract This article investigates the ways in which present-day monolingual dictionaries of the English language show respect towards groups of people. On the basis of the analysis of selected entries of the most recent editions of English learners’ dictionaries and the Concise Oxford Dictionary we outline five different strategies employed in these dictionaries to avoid discrimination of and offensiveness towards other people. The analysis comprises the phrasing of definitions, illustrations, the selection of examples, the choice of headwords as well as usage notes in comparison to data obtained from English corpora.

Abstract As utility tools dictionaries should convey data in an impartial way. Lexicographers should not impose either their subjective view or some prevailing ideologies on the users of the dictionary. This paper focuses on aspects of exclusion and othering in some South African dictionaries. Different types of exclusion in different types of dictionaries are shown but it is also shown how dictionaries contribute to processes of inclusion. The treatment of a single offensive racist word in different dictionaries is discussed and the lack of countering the insulting impact of the use of the word is criticized. A positive response to this problem by means of a policy for the treatment of sensitive words is also discussed.

Abstract The article describes in a chronological overview the lexicographical processing of the entry cikán (‘Gypsy’) and its derivatives which are now perceived as more or less discriminatory and establishes historical and political references. Central attention is directed to the dictionary articles from the Concise dictionary of the Czech language: the author explores the connections between the dictionary articles and the tenor of the excerpted material which is available online as a digitized card index. In this way one can partly determine to what extent one can infer an evidence of a prejudice that has accompanied the presence of the Sinti and Roma on the Bohemian / Czech or Moravian territory for centuries until today.
