This article provides a contrastive analysis of the prepositional verbal argument in Spanish (es. complemento de regimen preposicional – CR) and its translations in Croatian, based on a parallel corpus. Ever since Alarcos Llorach postulated it in 1968, there have been many theoretical works about the CR (Vid. Bibliography). Nevertheless, many problems identified by these authors (e.g. lack of a definitive criterion for its identification, the possibility of varying the argument type, double transitivity, pronominal substitution, etc.) are still the subject of debate. On the other hand, the equivalent function to the CR in Croatian is classified as a type of indirect object (Katicic, 2002). Further, the rich nominal inflection in Croatian changes the role of prepositions in relation to the syntactic functions. We will compare parts of the syntactic structures of these two languages, rarely compared in linguistic literature, seeking to offer insight into verbal complements in Spanish.

The main objective of this article is to outline an analysis of verbal politeness and impoliteness based on selected passages of El Quijote and Borges’ story Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote. Through the lens of these texts, we were able to examine some of the different theories that have emerged on this topic, and, in particular, certain politeness strategies. In our discussion we consider both the rhetorical perspective (which encompasses strategies for creating persuasive discourse), and the logical perspective, basing our arguments on specific examples in the texts. The results of this analysis lead to the conclusion that verbal politeness offers a frame of reference which enables a better understanding of the texts in question, opening up new perspectives not considered by traditional literary theory. Further, we observed that not everything that initially appeared impolite, and even offensive, actually was impolite, and vice versa.

Phraseology and idioms have been scantly investigated in the field of dialectology, compared to the rich tradition of phonetic and lexicological studies that made available long ago accurate dialectal maps and atlases for all the languages of Europe.

There is no lack of irony in this given the etymology of the word idiom itself(<gr. ‚ιδιός „particular“ or „specific“), which refers precisely to what is typical of one’s native soil. On the other hand, speakers often accompany the use of idioms and proverbs with pragmatic markers like as we say in my village, as we say in my homeland, as my grandmother said, even for standard expressions. This seems to presuppose the existence of a relationship – within linguistic consciousness – between phraseology and non-standard diatopic (or diaphasic) varieties, either as a rhetorical strategy or an intuitive hypercorrection. Spanish phraseology and paremiology allow us to observe certain cues in this respect.","PeriodicalId":30803,"journal":{"name":"Verba Hispanica","volume":"25 1","pages":"55-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70588998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
The present study takes as a starting point the famous quotation from Don Quixote “I think, Sancho, there is no proverb that is not true, all being maxims drawn from experience itself, the mother of all the sciences”, and aims to investigate sayings and proverbs in general with special attention precisely to that “experience itself”, taking into account the cultural foundations of each language community as well as those established through dialogue between different cultures. The main objective is to show, through the examples in Spanish, Serbian and Slovenian, the gnoseological relativism of proverbs and sayings which is necessarily reflected in the structure and use of these constructions. The study also discusses why proverbs fall into disuse and presents some modern equivalent mechanisms and forms.

In line with the constructivist paradigm, L2 teaching is more successful when it accommodates the individual characteristics and needs of the learner. In this paper, this is explored in relation to research projects completed by the students of an elective course Learning strategies in L2 learning. Following the model of project-based instruction, the students are stimulated to choose a topic of their interest and to complete an independent research project to be presented in the form of an academic paper. During this process, a number of didactic tools are provided as scaffolding in order to guide them through the learning process. Here, we explore the role of these didactic solutions and their perception by the students who participated in this qualitative action research project. The results reveal a dynamic between the creation of the academic text, the feedback, and the development of autonomy.

Using the concept of ‘late style’ established by Adorno (1993) in his analysis of the last quartets of Beethoven and adopted up by Said (2006), we consider the mature Borges’s essays on time and immortality and his exploration of the themes of The Double and insomnia in his fictional works Stories of the Book of Sand and poem The Cipher. We analyse some key characteristics of Borges’s style – coincidences and dissidences – and compare them to those proposed by Adorno for artistic production in later years.

The Spanish subjunctive form vaya historically split into different form and has given rise to units of different categories which show different syntactic behavior, from the interjection (iVaya!) to more or less fixed expressions in which the original movement meaning of the verb ir has bleached into those of doubt or desire (Deja que se vaya > Vaya con Dios, Vaya por Dios, Vaya usted a saber...). Alongside these forms, there are other sequences whose grammatical boundary with the interjections has not always been clearly delineated: iVaya mierda de nudos!; Vaya susto que me has dado...; Lo dicen y vaya si es verdad. Are we then dealing with an interjection combined with an adjacent unit or, on the other hand, are vaya or vaya si acting as intensifiers of the syntagmatic group to which they belong? We here defend the latter hypothesis with a special focus on those cases in which vaya, is morpohologically frozen and appears to act as an intensifier of a predicate or, in different contexts, a noun. Using a Functional Grammar approach, we examine the grammatical properties of constructions such as Vaya si es verdad; Aquellos no lo sabian y estos vaya que lo saben demand (in particular, suprasegmental features and word order), their syntactic variants and their similarities with other emphatic constructions involving stressed relatives or quantifiers.

This contribution seeks to explore in a literary context Jacques Derrida’s hypothesis on the interrelationship of the Self and the Other expounded in his book Of Hospitality and Politics of Friendship, this work tends to investigate the features of Otherness in relation to the Selfhood in literary context. These features will be investigated through analysis the presence and emergence of the Other in Cervantes’s Don Quixote of the Mancha and in Borges’ fantastic short stories The Other and The House of Asterion and outline the modes of the deconstruction and recreation of the Self, whose identity is being interrupted and recreated by the Other. We have identified three types of the Other that in these works which appear to have a function of deconstructing and reconstructing Self. These are the Other as signal of the linguistic, ethnic and cultural diversity of Spain in the Cervantes’s Don Quixote; the Other as a reflection of the Selfhood from both the past and the future at once, with the autofictional reference in the Borges’s story The Other; the Other as a monster in Borges’s story The House of Asterion, who is converted and liberated by his own hostile guest, Theseus. The disruptions in the identity of the Self caused by the intrusion of the Other are thus revealed to be vital and constitutive, demonstrating that the Other is an inherent part of the Self. In this way, in the work of Cervantes and Borges it is possible to detect a change in the traditional conception of the Self and identity, a Derridean deconstruction of the Cartesian motto as “I think, therefore I am the Other”.
