Analysis of the impact of selected determinants on the demand for mutual fund management servicesThe authors try to identify the main factors impacting the value of inflows to mutual funds in Poland. The inflows to mutual funds are compared to the following data: costs total expense ratios, investment performance in the current and previous year, and fund size. The data was collected from 451 financial statements of Polish mutual funds, for the years 2012–2016. The funds belong to three categories: bond, equity, small, and mid cap equity. The findings suggest that the connection between the funds fees — the price — and inflows to funds is relatively weak. Investment performance in the same year is the only factor that shows significant correlation with mutual fund flows.

Life activity of parents raising a child with a disability as an important element of their health protectionDiagnosis of a child’s disability becomes a cause of stress that applies to the whole family, above all the mother, who most often deals with the care and upbringing of the child. Disability absorbs the physical and mental resources in the family, because much of the attention is focused on the child. Parents, and above all mothers, are tired both physically and mentally. Life activity, understood as professional activity, as well as spending free time away from home, enables disengagement from the child’s disability, which may have a beneficial effect on the improvement of well-being. The aim of the article is to present the professional activity of parents bringing up a child with disabilities, free time, tourism, and leisure outside the place of residence. The study was based on unpublished data from the Household Budget Survey BBGD 2014 and data from the study “Entrepreneurial and Consumer Behaviors in Families Caring for Children and Teenagers with Disabilities” financed by the National Center for Science OPUS 4 and individual interviews.

The Giffen good — a praxeological approachIn the present paper, we argue that the shape of any respectable demand curve must be monotonic non-increasing. By doing so, we follow the footsteps of Murray Rothbard, who regarded the demand curve as derived from the law of diminishing marginal utility. However, our caveat is that the horizontal axis must represent the units of the same economic good. Equipped with the notion of the same economic good, we also argue that Giffen or Veblen goods do not pose any real problem for analysis. Rather, they behave as any other good — that is the demand curve for them is also and necessarily downward sloping.

The case against drug prohibitionThe case against drug prohibition is overwhelming. This law is to drugs what alcohol prohibition was to those substances: a disaster. Drug use, by and among consenting adults, is a victimless crime: it preys on the poor, lifts our inmate population into the stratosphere, has negative racial connotations and leads to needless deaths.

Organizational and legal problems of securing intellectual resources in the enterpriseThe goal of the research paper is to present intellectual property as an intangible resource in enterprise. The specific features of this resource and the base of competing co-operation and rivalry characteristic for a contemporary market make these core resources for development of not only a large company. In these circumstances it is a premise to create adjusted orientation on the search and exposure of immaterial values but also their monitoring of competitors. Simultaneously this orientation is aimed at the choice of proper manners of protection of these values both within the organization,in the process of sharing both knowledge and information with other organizations on the market.

Cluster — a new trend or necessity?Enterprises from various industries are increasingly merging into cluster structures in which they see opportunities to develop their current activities and the opportunity to enter other markets. The theme of clusters is gaining increasing interest among business entities. This study analyses the phenomenon of clusters, based on the observations of several existing clusters. This essay focuses mainly on an analysis of the essence of clusters. Since the study is based on literature research, the article is theoretical in nature. The author assesses whether current cluster structures are just a temporary fashion, a new trend, or a real need of enterprises and concludes that clusters can provide economic benefits for regions and promote innovation.

Sovereign Money The aim of this paper is to point out the commonalities and differences between the two currency reform approaches “100% Money” and “Sovereign Money”. The definition of “100% Money” was taken from Irving Fisher, the definition of “Sovereign Money” from Joseph Huber. The biggest commonality of these two approaches is the aim to end or to ease financial crises, the biggest difference is the way this money gets booked. This paper is interesting for students and teachers of finance, especially if they are experts in money theory.

Application of ISO/EIC 27001 in the financial sector — scope and benefitsIn the face of technological advances and, as a result, the increasing threat of the loss of growing amount of data collected by financial institutions, it seems necessary to employ effective security measures in the process of information management. The necessity to implement information security management systems ISMS by all institutions processing personal data is reflected in national legislation. The requirements resulting from contemporary hazards and legal provisions are concurrent with the requirements of the international standard ISO/IEC 27001, concerning the designing of the information security management system. This standard is most widely used by IT companies, however, the financial sector that collects and a processes huge amount of personal data, constitutes its significant recipient. Most of the companies certified by this standard come from the Eastern Asia and Pacific region, dominated by Japan, and from Europe, where the United Kingdom is the leader. In Poland the use of ISO/IEC 27001 is growing, yet the financial institutions that fulfill its requirements are still in a minority. It seems that from May 2018 on, national regulations imposing greater responsibility for the security of personal data on the institutions processing it, will bring the above-mentioned standard into focus.

Problems of conflicts of interest in the functioning of the capital marketThe study refers to the occurrence of conflicts of interest on the capital market, which negatively affects the functioning of the capital market, limits its development potential, and may even affect the outflow of investors, particularly those providing liquidity in the market. Today, the social responsibility of business entities becomes something important. It is a specific determinant of the company’s image and the basis of its operation. Word = Institution “brokerage house” should be associated with competence, honesty, or righteousness resulting from observance of the law and ethics principles of conducted business. The existence of a set of regulations the Code of Good Practice for Brokerage Houses, the Act on Counteracting Unfair Market Practices relating to the functioning of brokerage houses, there are situations in business practice that are not used to develop a capital market, based on a conflict of interest. Brokerage firms are obliged, on the one hand, to: sell shares and, on the other hand, recommend buying them. “Manipulation on the market” would mean entering into transactions that give false, misleading signals about supply, demand, and prices of equity instruments. To avoid conflicts of interest, there are special procedures in brokerage offices that prevent co-operation between competing departments: chinese walls. Each office additionally has rules governing the flow and control of confidential information. Such information may not be available, for example, between primary and secondary market forces, between sales departments and analysis departments. The indicated issues were brought together, focusing on the possible consequences of conflicts of interest. It emphasizes the difficulty of bringing justice through the necessity of showing the causal link between the conflict of interest and the possible loss of the investor. Then solutions were identified to protect against the negative aspects of the conflict of interest, and the proposals were presented in their conclusions.

Controversies in the perception of foreign currency loans in Poland as well as their verification from the economic and financial perspectiveThis article is devoted to the verification of the following seven popular opinions on the foreign currency loans in Poland: I banks create money out of nothing; II the banks that were granting foreign currency loans did not actually possess the foreign currencies; III the banks possessed foreign currencies, but only for the loans denominated in foreign currencies, and not for the ones indexed in them; IV the banks that were granting foreign currency loans made a profit on the appreciation of these currencies; V a conversion of foreign currency loans at the exchange rate from the day of granting the loan would not entail high costs for the banking sector; VI it was unjustified to use the foreign exchange spreads by the banks that were granting the foreign currency loans; VII the foreign exchange spreads used by the banks were excessive, which means that the banks obtained an undue profit on them. The author critically evaluates these opinions and on the basis of current economic and financial knowledge, concludes that they are wrong.
