In the last decades the concept of empowerment has gained importance in the field of social sciences. However, there are limited studies assessing the empowerment within the gay communities, a traditionally discriminated group and whose right to marry has not yet been recognized in many countries around the world. The main objective of this study is to analyze in what extent the laws of same-sex marriages have an impact in the empowerment of the LGBT population and if such empowerment is related to a greater social well-being and less discrimination of the same. This study counted with a total of 1290 participants of the LGBT community, of 22 Ibero-american countries, the contact was carried out by means of social networks, associations and face to face interaction. The results obtained show that there are significant differences in the level of empowerment, the countries with same-sex marriage laws, showed a higher empowerment. Also we observe that the empowerment is related positively with the social well-being and with the perception of discrimination. It was assessed the implications of these findings as well as the future lines of research.

This article makes a reading and reflection of a psychosocial intervention taken at Sunrise Community (SRC), a multi-ethnic indigenous settlement (12 indigenous groups and non-indigenous) located in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Through Community Social Psychology approach and Participatory Action Research, weekly visits were made for five months. Interviews, meetings, and informal conversations with leaders and residents were recorded in field diaries. Among the concerns residents had were: communication difficulties and the distancing of traditional practices that are associated with identity issues and historical inter-ethnic conflicts that mark relations in the SRC. As a result, the community held a Meeting of Ethnic Groups to gather members of SRC and other indigenous settlements for a day of celebration, to re-encounter traditional customs and practices. We acted as facilitator, favoring reflections on the roles, struggles and autonomy in the SRC and suggesting a horizontal model in the interactions. The organization and preparation of the celebration increased the interaction among the residents, although the different forms of participation and the ambiguity of identity markers. Reflections on postcolonialism and power relations have made it possible to weave important considerations into the findings, especially to reflect on the political dimension in claiming the rights of these groups.

Otros/as investigadores/as han usado este acercamiento en estudios de migrantes con el objetivo de darles voz y visibilizarlos en las sociedades receptoras (Sonn, 2010) EnglishThis work constitutes the second phase of a study that explores how the life projects of Cubans from the East of Cuba who have migrated to Puerto Rico in the last twenty years change as a result of the experiences, relationships and conditions that have lived in Puerto Rico.
