The article proposes a review of the role of women in the works that shape Salvador Reyes' narrative of Valparaiso: El cafe del puerto (1926), Piel nocturna (1936), Monica Sanders (1951) and Valparaiso, puerto de nostalgia (1955). The construction of the female subject follows Rimbaud’s notion of “heart and beauty”. This notion counters the phallocentric bias prevalent in Chile in the early 20th century by setting lines of flight that open possibilities of transgression within the order of the family. In addition, this article proposes intertextual connections necessary for understanding the disruptive component of the representation of women in Reyes’ writing

In this article a novel by Graham Greene entitled Monsignor Quixote is analysed, a book that involves a recreation of the novel by Cervantes. The author of this article employs two concepts from Roman law: authority and power in his analysis. In this work by Greene, authority arises from the books or the book writers, whose reading allows life to keep making sense. In Greene, a strategy of reading known as the sortes virgilianae is found and this allows the characters to get their bearings in the daily difficulties. However, power is described as illiterate, the absence of books and ignorance

This article approaches the work of Friar Camilo Henriquez, specifically the play The Camila or the Patriot of South America , from the assumption that aesthetic principles are subordinate to the illustrated modern and republican ideas, who Fray Camilo devoted most of his life to defend and disseminate. From the analysis of La Camila, the article unveils the different textual marks through which the author disseminated republican ideas and established, in an assimilation fashion, a modern Indian subject. This happens in a reception context in which colonialism and modernity appear to be simultaneous, and therefore republican thought becomes utopian

This paper focuses on the relationship between Cervantes’ Cart of Death episode ( Quijote , II, 11) and the sacramental play entitled Las Cortes de la Muerte (The Parliament of Death) , usually attributed to Lope de Vega. This play has received some attention by the critics because it is almost certainly the sacramental play mentioned in the second part of Don Quixote , when the knight-errant meets the actors belonging to the Angulo el Malo’s company. After commenting on Cervantes’ episode and the possible identification of the sacramental play mentioned there, the paper provides a dramatic and literary analysis of Las Cortes de la Muerte (The Parliament of Death) , with comment about its structure and other details concerning its allegorical and symbolic constructions.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of written direct corrective feedback on the learning improvement of prepositions “ por and para ” in Spanish as second language. These grammatical structures are considered among the most complex prepositions to acquire during the learning process, considering the frequency of errors in their use and their syntactic-semantic nature (Ferreira et al , 2014; Fernandez Jodar, 2006; Gines y Ramirez, 1998; Fernandez Lopez, 1997). In order to achieve this aim, a quasi-experimental study with a pretest, immediate posttest, delayed posttest and control group was conducted. In this context, we have systematically applied the strategies of written metalinguistic and non-metalinguistic direct corrective feedback on these prepositions errors. The results have shown the positive effects of the written corrective feedback on the acquisition of these prepositional structures.

In this paper, we present an explanation for the problem of the abstract versions of Peter Wason’s four-card selection task: modest subjects’ results when they are confronted with these tasks. Our explanation poses that individuals do not comprehend the task rule as a conditional sentence, but as a biconditional one, causing that subjects do not choose the correct cards. Santamaria presented an objection for any approach that suggests a biconditional interpretation in the task selection. In this work, we discuss this objection based on the apparent primacy of a logical rule in human reasoning: modus ponens . Additionally, we present a study based on Socratic dialogue seminars with a tutorial style, developed by us, to check whether our explanation is viable or not, and discuss the results achieved.

This paper reviews the different recreations of Don Quixote in the Entremeses of the seventeenth century. These recreations sometimes are treated as very simple motive mentions. However, they also function as complex texts signaling the popularity of the novel of Cervantes and his character always from a playful and festive perspective.

In this paper, from the literature of Luis Vidales’s Suenan timbres , we explore the dynamics of Colombian rising cities that initiate an accelerated modernization process, deprived of an appropriate development of modern thinking, along with the new material advances, which makes it impossible to debate the relevance and the process followed by these types of transformations. This situation leads Colombia to experience the idiotism of modernization without modernity, impeding men to understand the needs and conflicts generated by progress. These villages from twentieth century beginnings quickly turn into city projects determined by the arrival of new objects, creating a mobile and noisy atmosphere, opposed to villages’ passivity. From poetics committed to social and political change, Vidales recreates reality as a poet of criticism in Colombia.

In this article, I analyze the alcoholic imaginaries elaborated in Oda al vino by Pablo Neruda and Borrachos dionisiacos by Pablo de Rokha. As a hypothesis, I propose that both texts are a defense or apology of alcohol and drunkenness, where the worth of alcohol consumption is closely connected with the idea of masculinity postulated by poetic voices. In this sense, I also propose that both texts configure a poetic of drunkenness, which belongs to the tradition of poets who have sung the virtues of alcohol and its effects from Antiquity to Modernity.
